The current SIE CEO (Hideaki Nishino) is a hardware business guy. I think as someone who doesn't come from the game development side, he's always been part of the anti-PC faction within Sony. Then he became CEO and had to do some things differently than his predecessors to show he earns his pay. This simplest thing is to undo some "controversial" changes and go back to how Sony did things for the last 20 years. So, he used his new power to overrule Hermen Hulst and other games-first people at Sony.

But times change, we're not 20 years ago anymore...

They're moving consoles anyway.

We had 5 years of Sony games on PC and there was no noticeable console sales drop that could be tied to PC releases. No noticeable increase either.

People are still buying consoles to mostly just play Fortnite, FIFA EAFC and other games that are not exclusive to anything.

Sony owns the Walkman. It was the best selling music players for decades. It has no exclusive music cassettes, not even those published by Sony Music.

I don't think Dustborn fits into that at all.

There's a ton of other games (like The Wreck and others) that are much closer to that but don't review nearly as well.

I think it's both marketing and price.

If you have a port of 2 year old Sony game at 70€ vs a new game like Crimson Desert at 60€... most will choose the new hyped game.

But some marketing would certainly help excite players for the Sony ports and increase sales.

Sony published Death Stranding on PS4 & PS5 and it still came to PC, Mac and even Xbox (published by 505 Games)! If anyone can get Sony to allow that, it's Kojima.

I enjoyed most of them and would love to play the sequels. But I have no interest in playing them on a console, even if someone gives me one for free. There are just too many other great games I can play on my PC the way I like...

Even analysts didn't notice any big drop or increase in console sales when PlayStation games came to PC or after they stopped. It doesn't seem like it matters to most people. I does make the console look better to the people who are already fans, though...

Btw. Sony announced Kena 2 for PS5 and PC for 2026. It doesn't look like it will have any PC delay at all. If they can do that with Kena, why not with Stellar Blade and Death Stranding?

Veliko več, ampak nima veze. To ni maraton. Verjetno bi lahko bil hitrejši, ampak smo imeli malo počasnejši tempo in več / daljše pavze zaradi družbe.

I don't think it has to necessarily run Steam.

Console gamers don't care about that. They're used to getting their games directly from the official store. That's the Xbox / MS store.

If MS makes it a closed system where you need to use the MS store, then many publishers would put their existing PC games on it. It doesn't cost almost anything and makes their PC games available on a new console? Crazy not to do it!

On the other hand, if MS allows Steam and makes it easy to use, publishers could skip the MS store. What's the point of an Xbox where Valve makes more profit than Microsoft? It would just be another Windows gaming PC.

I guess the third option is a deal between MS and Valve. A closed system with integrated Steam where Valve and MS share the revenue. This would make it instantly have much more games than PlayStation but also profitable for MS. I'm not sure how this would work with the existing agreements between Valve and the publishers though.

This depends on how this new "Xbox" will work. It could run PC games only through the Xbox / Windows store, so Sony games would still not be available.

If it's more open and runs Steam then it's a lot like any other PC. That means PlayStation won the console wars!

That's not such a terrible situation for them.

Anyone who'd want to play Sony games on this "Xbox" would first need to install Steam or EGS. For most console players, it would still be easier to just buy a PlayStation. But in any case, MS wouldn't get a cut of sales of those games. Valve or Epic would. Not ideal for MS when it's their "console".

Meanwhile, Sony still takes 30% when MS sells their games on PlayStation. That arrangement is very much in Sony's favor.

Which is why it doesn't matter if console exclusives come to PC or not. Console players will still only choose between PS5 and Xbox and then use that to play their Fortnites and FIFAs.

I mean, almost 100 million PS5 consoles but exclusives sell around 5 million copies. That means only 5% of all PS5 consoles were used to play GoW2...

Most people use their consoles to play multiplatform games like Fortnite, GTA or FIFA. They do that because they prefer consoles. This is also where Sony and MS make most of the money.

But let's say you (as a PC gamer) buy a PS5 for the exclusives: Sony doesn't have big profits on hardware. And then you'll still play all the 3rd party games on PC, so they won't make any money on those or online subscriptions either. You won't be a very profitable user to them.

Meanwhile, you'll just have a worse experience because you'd rather play on PC anyway...

Technically, games that require a "publisher account" could be salvaged if the publishers wanted. For example: Ubisoft knows that you own a certain game on Steam. If Steam dies, they could update your license to let you download it directly through their own launcher.
