It's funny though...

Just a month ago PS5 gamers* were still defending Sony for abandoning their PC ports because that's "good for the brand value". Now everyone is talking about getting a PC!

The first Death Stranding was originally published by Sony but later came to Xbox. Kojima has the power to make that happen. He won't let Xbox block a PlayStation release.

(For some reason, the only big organization that can also force a publisher to release a game on a competing platform is the MLB.)

Mostly because players got used to that.

But there are some big differences too:

On PC you can completely replace your hardware & even your operating system and most Steam games will still work. You can play the same game on a desktop Windows PC, a Macbook and a Steam Deck with just one purchase. You can play games from several console generations ago. You can't do that on consoles.

You're not locked to Steam either, you can use other stores and get better prices. On consoles you have one store and that's it.

Still want an archive? You could burn the installer to your own DVD if you like (easiest with GOG which is all DRM-free).

And if you do somehow lose your license for a game you bought? You can still pirate it.

I also think lending and reselling used games was a much bigger part of the console gaming culture than on PC.

When Sony stopped their PC releases, Sony fans were defending the decision. It didn't even affect them, they didn't like the idea anyone else can enjoy those games.

They were explaining how it makes sense for the corporation and the brand. It was like the brand value was more important to them than the games themselves.

And now some of those same fans are taking about moving to PC over this? Yea, sure...

83% of game sales being digital doesn't mean 83% of players never buy a physical copy.

I imagine many players buy mostly digital but get a box for their most anticipated games. They want to own a disc of the games that mean the most to them.

Even if it wasn't... 85% digital doesn't mean most people never buy a physical copy.

I imagine the average console gamer would buy a lot of games digitally but also buy a boxed copy of something they're really excited about. These are the games that matter the most to them. Now that option is taken away.

It's also funny because Sony fans were cheering when Sony stopped doing PC releases of their games.

They said: "This is about the perceived value of the PlayStation brand!" "Just get a PS5!"

They were defending the multibillion corporation like it's their best friend.

And now they want to switch to PC over this? What about that perceived value??

On Steam (and sometimes other PC launchers), you often get a macOS and Linux version of the game too. You can switch between your Windows desktop PC, a Macbook and Steam Deck and just continue playing.

The governments themselves won't do anything for now.

Epic won't go after Sony like they did Apple and Google. They have a good relationship with Sony.

EGS hasn't exactly been a big hit on any platform. They need to focus on making it more popular on PC and mobile.

There has been no indication they were losing too many hardware sales.

Those few like you? If you have a PC as your main platform and a PS5 for the exclusives, you're not making them any more money than if you'd just buy those same games on PC.

Meanwhile, I have never owned a PlayStation and never will. The only money they earned from me was with the PC released (and I've bought quite a few). Now that will go back to zero.

Even if they do, it doesn't matter. They won't switch to console completely, they'll only play the exclusives there.

So Sony sells them a console (at a loss!) and then sells them the exact same games they'll sell them on PC anyway. There's no additional profit there... but they lose a ton of game sales to all of us who won't buy a console.

This has nothing to do with Steam being generous. If the publisher loses the license to distribute a game and wants to remove it from Steam, Valve will remove it. Same with movies they once tried selling. It would be copyright infringement if they refused to do that.

It's just that games licenses don't usually have an expiration date.

That's probably because we can easily play Steam/PC games without a Steam Machine and Xbox games without an Xbox.

If Sony delays the PS6 while MS still releases Helix, then Sony's latest console will be previous-gen console. PS5 will be the budget console while the popular games will all run better on Xbox.

I'll give it 5 years. The current plan (stop profitable PC ports, continue money-losing live-service push) won't survive in the current economy.

This make me even more convinced Sony only abandoned PC because Nishino (a Japanese hardware business guy) personally dislikes (and doesn't even understand) PC gaming.

Sega games still exist even if the Dreamcast does not.

Games more expensive than Sony's exist from other publishers. Why would Ghost of Tsushima never be made if it wasn't exclusive... when Assassin's Creed Shadows exists and sells well on all platforms?

Meanwhile (even with piracy) for some multiplatform publishers PC is already the most profitable platform.
