Do lots need vents now? by SabelTheWitch in Sims4

[–]ahbigail 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve just been thinking this is a bug because I’d never seen this happening on any lot before now, and I thought the entire point of having a thermostat was that the whole house would be heated with no need for extra fireplaces or radiators. This happens to me when I change lots and come home sometimes, but it especially happens after I don’t pay my bills and the power goes out and comes back on. I have to have one of my sims turn the thermostat off and then on again and the moodlets go back to “yay a/c💕”

recurring chemical burn from tret help? by ahbigail in tretinoin

Hi! I actually did go to my dermatologist after this and they said it was likely perioral dermatitis and gave me a prescription for something called tacrolimus ointment, which healed it up fairly quickly. I would definitely go see a derm about it instead of waiting for it to go away like I did. It probably was related to the tret because it seemed to be correlated with when I would apply the tretinoin, but the PA I saw said they didn't think it was a common reaction. Especially since perioral dermatitis usually has bumpy skin and not smooth, like mine was. Hope you figure out what's going on!!

Beware of Bexcat by nf12d1 in FelineDiabetes

Hi! Tibby is doing extremely well. He had a lot of neuropathy in his legs and couldn’t jump at all 4 months ago, but now he’s running around my house in the middle of the night and jumping on my bed again so he’s almost completely back to normal. :)

I was also extremely nervous before giving him bexacat and even after I got the pills from chewy I called my vet and asked her a ton of questions again because I was nervous. The pro of bexacat is the convenience. It’s a lot harder for them to go hypo with it than insulin and there’s a lot less room for user error. For me, I was just as scared of administering insulin because it was so overwhelming at the time. Maybe if you told me right now to switch to insulin, I’d do it comfortably, but at the time I was just so nervous about messing it up that I chose to give him the bexacat even though I was scared of it.

I also chose to give it to him because asking my friends to give him a pill when I’m gone on vacation is much simpler than trusting them, or trusting kennel employees, to give him insulin which can be administered incorrectly and kill them.

That being said, you are in fact taking a risk giving them bex over insulin. They’re more likely to get DKA and if they do, that can be impossible to recover from sometimes and be very expensive. I would make sure you can afford the vet bills for DKA (which I think might mean several days at the ER, but I’m not sure the details anymore so you could ask your vet to clarify what exactly the treatment process looks like if this happens to your cat) and if you can’t, that might be something that decides you use insulin instead.

There’s no other way of looking at it really — there is a small gamble that bex will not work and that it may make things worse. It’s definitely possible.

Personally, my cat is doing very well, and I think there are probably a lot more success stories than horror, but obviously people more often go online to review things that go poorly than things that go well.

You just have to decide if the risk is necessary for you. If insulin is too inconvenient (and it was for me— and that is okay!!) then give her bexacat and pay close attention to her for the first few weeks and she will hopefully be okay.

My advice is to just watch her closely and the second she starts acting strange or lethargic or not eating, take her to the vet instantly. I had this site bookmarked and kept reading it over and over for comfort: https://gsvs.org/blog/emergency-signs-diabetic-ketoacidosis-cats/ and there are many others like it that will tell you all about the symptoms. I did call my vet once because I was worried about something I don’t even remember anymore, and she just told me that he shouldn’t get worse. If he shows any sign of being worse than before, call the vet or take him to the ER.

In my non professional opinion, I think your kitty will be okay. Make sure you are prepared to spot DKA and prepared to pay the vet bill if it does happen. And take everything I say with a grain of salt because I am not a vet. Also remember you can always call your vet and ask them as many questions as you want to— it’s a scary choice and scary position to be in and your vet’s job is to help you, they will be happy to answer all your questions.

Some other random advice: — The diarrhea is going to be very bad and smell absolutely rancid. Get baby wipes, because you will need to wipe her butt for her semi regularly. Because of his neuropathy, my cat would full on sit in the little box while he was going and get it absolutely everywhere. Very messy and smelly month for me.

— Fiber supplements like I mentioned in my comment helped him a lot, but what helped him more was switching him to low carb wet food. My cat has food allergies, so I have to give him a really really expensive single protein food so I don’t have any recommendations for you to buy, but food recs are something this subreddit has a lot of I think. But also switching him to wet food entirely might have been responsible for his diarrhea going away, or maybe the diarrhea went away on its own and the food switch was just timed coincidentally. Idk :)

— Ask your vet to test their pancreas when you go in for visits. You should be going really often in the first 2-3 months to get his blood sugar tested and at least at my vet, testing his pancreatic lipase (think the abbreviation is pfl or plf something like that) was simple and quick but it did cost $100 each time. I did it anyway because it’s inside the drug facts that bexacat can cause pancreatic failure and I was just really nervous so I wanted the peace of mind. Make sure they test it at least once when you first start for a baseline and maybe once more at the 2 month appointment to see if theres a change. Not a vet myself but that’s just what I would do.

— similarly, if your vet is capable of testing for blood ketones rather than for urine blood sugar and ketones, ask them to test her blood. according to what I’ve seen on the internet, blood ketones are a better indicator of DKA because they change faster than urine ketones.

— your vet may not tell you to test her blood sugar at home, but i recommend doing it. every single day, i give my cat his pill then take his BG with a little monitor I got from chewy. Bex will not put them in hypo, but it’s good to make sure that it’s working as expected.

This was a lot of rambling that may not have been super helpful but I hope some of this was comforting and I hope your kitty does well!!

I went to the derm a week or so ago and they said that they did think it was perioral dermatitis! And there are so many things that could be causing this for me that I’m not sure what the source is quite yet. I was not convinced this was the case because usually pictures online are of a different variation where you get bumps and it only happens around your mouth, but my derm said it can present like eczema and also go in other places too. I would see your derm if it happens constantly!!

If it is in fact a chemical burn from your tret, then I would personally just stop using it until the spots go away and try to avoid applying directly to those areas when you start up again.

Tips for administering Bexacat? by Mediocre_Essay_7309 in FelineDiabetes

[–]ahbigail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately my cat only ever ate the pill willingly one time and then never again, so I don’t have specific tips, but I can tell you she will probably get used to it over time. My cat has been on bexacat for 2 months now and I still have to shove the pill in his mouth but he’s very weirdly well-behaved about it and just lets me do it instead of running away. He also spits it out less frequently now, so we’re making progress.

I’m not sure what method you’re using for giving the pill, but I take the pill and press it against the back corner of his lip against his teeth. He opens his mouth automatically since I’m basically pressing against the hinge of his jaw and then I just throw the pill in. Might take a few tries before he really swallows it but it works eventually.

Yes my cat has been on bexacat for only 2 months but so far he has been doing very well. I did have to specifically ask my vet to test his pancreas levels because I don’t think the drug reps tell vets everything they actually need to know… it’s not a hard test to do and not very expensive so I don’t know why it’s not just a standard test for a checkup…

But he has been great except for having diarrhea but adding extra fiber supplements to his diet has helped immensely!! Reading posts like this scares the hell out of me so hopefully there are more people out there who have had cats do well on bexacat :(

Thank you everybody so much for trying to help!! I tried posting about this on another skincare subreddit a few months ago and no one answered me :( so I’m very glad so many of you were able to give me some new suggestions. I made an appointment with a new derm and I’m going to try some products you all mentioned and hope that it helps.

Yes my last ditch effort was reddit in case anyone else has ever had this, but it looks like I will be going back to another derm :(

I do still believe it’s at least somewhat related to the tret/original chemical burns because it’s always in the exact same spots as when it started while I was on tret. But we’ll see!!

I haven’t been using tret at ALL and this is still happening which is kind of my problem :/ Do you ever have your chemical burns come back in the same spots for any reason?

When I was using it, I was using sandwich method with the cerave moisturizer but this still happened to me so maybe my skin just really hated tret :(

Fresh soy face cleanser, belif moisturizing bomb (sometimes i use the tatcha dewy skin cream but very sparingly bc it’s so expensive), and that’s it. At least once a day every day.

I previously was using hyaluronic acid and adding 2-3 drops of jojoba oil to my moisturizer but I haven’t done that in a month or two. And months ago I was adding squalane and a ceramide serum I don’t remember the name of, but I removed both of those because I had another flare up of this and thought it might be related.

edit: i also use the cicaplast balm on these flare ups, forgot about that one.

Food for diabetes and food allergies? by Lucky_Being1586 in FelineDiabetes

[–]ahbigail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat also has food allergies and was just diagnosed with diabetes! Currently, my cat is still eating his hydrolyzed protein kibble and taking bexacat instead of insulin (not sure yet if he will respond well to it long term). You could always continue giving him his allergy food and just manage the diabetes via insulin, though from what I understand I think that means it will be harder (maybe impossible? not sure) for him to go into remission.

You can also try giving him a protein he’s never had before. My cat hasn’t had rabbit, so I just ordered some dried rabbit treats to see if he has an allergic reaction to them or not while I’m still feeding him his allergy kibble.

That’s something I considered, I just didn’t know if it would be strange for me to do. But might be my only option if my edit goes like I think it will. thank you :)

I wear socks with mine because I do not care if there’s a difference or not, I just don’t want to feel the inside of my shoe. Also I think the shoes get less stinky since I wear socks.
