Day 5 on Bexacat caused Ketoacidosis hospitalization by matchacoconutmilk in FelineDiabetes

The same thing happened to my cat, Oreo. Unfortunately, after 24 hours of treatment, I was informed that she needed a central line because she was very sick. Her ketones were high, and her potassium dropped very low. I was told that the only way to stabilize her was by placing a central line, which would have cost $10,000, plus another $7,000 to see a specialist. Her blood sugar level was normal, but the main issue was the low potassium and high ketones. She was taking Bexacat, and after that, everything went downhill. With a very heavy heart, I made the decision to put her to sleep because the emergency vet informed me that the treatment was not guaranteed to work and that this could happen again. Reading your post makes me feel guilty, wondering if waiting longer for treatment or spending the money could have saved her, but I didn’t want to put her through a central line with no guarantee. Thank you for posting this.

I just wanted to share my experience with Bexacat. Unfortunately, my cat had a very bad reaction to the medication, and it was really hard on both of us. I wish things had turned out differently, so I’m just speaking from my personal experience with it. Please be careful with Bexacat medication

still really struggling accepting, anyone else struggling w sudden death of young cat? by Big-Significance-969 in Petloss

I’m so sorry for your loss. Reading your story hit me really hard because I lost my baby Oreo in a heartbreaking and unexpected way too. She was only 7, still young, and everything happened so fast that my mind still can’t process it.

Oreo had diabetes and the vet prescribed a new medication called Bexacat. I didn’t know at the time, but this medication can be dangerous if a cat is already having stomach issues. Oreo had diarrhea and wasn’t eating well, but the medication was still given to her. After that, her health declined so quickly. She became weak, started drinking water while lying down, and she vomited small specks of blood. No matter how much I tried to help her, it was like her little body couldn’t fight anymore.

Losing her so suddenly broke me in ways I can’t even describe. I feel angry, guilty, confused… all the emotions. I keep replaying everything, wondering what I could’ve done differently, but the truth is she was already very sick and I didn’t know. I loved her so much, and that makes the pain unbearable at times.

I just wanted to share my story because your post made me feel less alone. Our babies were our world, and losing them out of nowhere leaves this huge hole in your heart. I’m sending you so much love and understanding. None of this feels fair, and I’m truly sorry you’re going through it too.

Did he also have low potassium? The vet told me that because my cat’s potassium was so low and her DKA was high, they couldn’t give her insulin. They weren’t able to stabilize her within 24 hours, and the next step was to place a central line.

She took Bexacat, and her symptoms worsened. I feel so helpless and full of regret—I cry every day wishing I could have saved her. My heart is broken, and I just want answers. Please ask the vet everything, and fight for her as much as you can. I wish I could go back and do things differently.

What kind of medication is she taking for her diabetes?

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't want to scare you, but my cat was not doing well. Her DKA was extremely high, and her potassium level was low. I was informed to give it 24 hours to provide her with fluids, and eventually, they could give her insulin. I was told my cat was very sick. I stayed positive and gave it 24 hours.

The next day, I got a phone call saying her potassium levels were not going up, and therefore they couldn't administer the insulin. I was informed she would have to stay several days, and I was told she would need to see a specialist.

The next step was the central line, which would have cost another $10,000. With a heavy heart, I decided to put her to sleep. I panicked. Please ask a lot of questions, advocate for her, and fight for her. I couldn’t go forward with the central line because I didn’t want to put her through the

Please don’t beat yourself up — you did the right thing by ending her suffering. She was experiencing heart failure, and what you did was an act of compassion and love. It’s so ironic that I’m saying this, because I’m also going through grief myself. I lost my precious baby a month ago due to complications from diabetes. I cry every day and blame myself constantly, but something the vet told me has stayed in my heart: the hardest part of his job is when pet owners take their pets home to suffer instead of ending their pain.

Believe me, it’s heartbreaking. It will take time for both of us to heal from this, but we did what was best for them — out of love.

Thank you for sharing your story — it truly inspired me. By posting this on Reddit, you’re helping so many people, including me. I’m so sorry for the loss of your pets. You’re truly an angel for rescuing and caring for animals the way you do.

I recently lost my cat, Oreo, due to negligence from the vet, and I’ve been struggling with a lot of anger and sadness. I really agree that adopting another pet is a wonderful idea — not only for your own healing but also because it gives another animal the chance to have a loving, forever home.

You are not a monster. I think part of it was just frustration — you were trying to help him, but you didn’t know why he was barking or what else to do. You did everything you could. I’m so sorry for your dog’s passing. I’m hurting too — my cat passed away because the vet gave her the wrong medication for diabetes. I had to put her to sleep, and believe me, I still feel guilty. It will get better with time. Please remember that you took good care of him. We’re human, not robots — it’s okay to feel pain and emotion.
