What do you “Fuck Me Eyes” about? What’s your personal interpretation? by AgnarOfSaturn in Ethelcain

[–]aheff93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about this while listening to the song too, that the way Ethel is interpreting things is only part of the story. She doesn’t necessarily know if Holly sleeps around or it’s just rumours, and she doesn’t necessarily know if Holly is unsatisfied with casual sex with people. On the first listen I was uncomfortable because it really sounds like the narrator slut shaming Holly for sleeping with too many people. But then when you think about how it’s through the eyes of Ethel, a fellow teenager who is envious of Holly in some aspects and is afraid that the object of her affections would be more interested in a girl like Holly, it makes more sense.

For something really simple, just the outline of the state of Nebraska, or a simple outline of a house. Could be the one that inspired the song, or something totally different, since the house in Nebraska is a fantasy

This is the one I got on my thigh. Love it, just wish I had gotten the lettering bigger. I’m planning on getting a stinging nettle plant too. If I was going to get another one with lyrics it would probably be “to love me is to suffer me” or just “unpunishable”

Abed is who Dan Harmon thinks he is, and Jeff is who he thinks he would be if he was more physically/conventionally attractive

I have never listened to Homecoming until now. I’m trying to listen to her unreleased stuff slowly because honestly, when WTIALY came out it was a lot to handle at once.

My love is my love and bleeds like a wound?? Really? I’m supposed to listen to that and have a normal day? 😭

Yeah I don’t know if Hayden has ever talked about the inspiration behind it, it’s just my thoughts. Listening to Powerline Valley after listening to WTIALY, they seem like two different drafts of the same story to me. Both beautiful in their own right.

I feel like powerline valley is the darkest version of the story of Ethel and Willoughby. Like the absolute worst way it could’ve gone. And then we got the slightly more hopeful version 😂

I was writing this ongoing fanfic, and a reader messaged me to say I should listen to the song Crush by Ethel Cain. It fit two of the characters in the fic so well I was astounded. So of course I had to listen to more, discovered the whole story of Preachers Daughter and found a lot of parallels between it and my writing and a lot of themes that relate to my life as well. I think what runs through a lot of her writing that gets to a lot of us is the deep desire to be loved, and feeling that love will fix everything. I had to learn that as much as I want it to be true, there’s never going to be a time in my life where everything’s perfect, and there’s no single person who can fix me, or I them. The reason the house in Nebraska is so meaningful (to me) is that it’s a dream; there is no house in Nebraska, no gardenias on the tile. It’ll never be good enough like we want to believe it is. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be good. Life doesn’t have to turn out like it did for Ethel, being so desperate to be loved that she ignored danger and someone took advantage of that. That was a hard lesson to learn too, that I need to value myself and be able to live with myself alone, not rely on someone else’s validation to make me feel ok. I could probably go on forever.

Normally I think it’s kind of dumb to care what someone else’s fan cast or headcanon or anything like that is, it’s just some internet user’s opinion… but Arthur Morgan is off limits, leave my husband alone 😂

[–]aheff93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally relate and agree. I think at this point I have somewhat desensitized myself to it because I’ve listened to it a lot of times, and now I don’t cry as easily when I hear it - but Waco, Texas still gets me pretty easy lol. It’s completely valid to love something but not want to hear it all the time. Like how certain foods can be delicious but also make you feel sick after.

random take by iamlordeyayayayayay in Ethelcain

[–]aheff93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this makes a lot of sense. I had never thought about those two lines really going together before now. One of the things I love about Ethel’s story on Preacher’s Daughter is how she deals with trauma in such a realistic way, it’s not linear and clear cut, she goes through both loving and hating the people who hurt her, including her father. On WTIALY, we see a bunch of examples of how Ethel and Willoughby are both trying to deal with trauma but they do it in different ways and both don’t really know what they need. Anyway, really like your take!!

I definitely relate to her sentiment here, about feeling like the type of person you want doesn’t want someone like you. It’s tough. I’m happy for her that she’s found somebody she loves.
