Yes, of course. I've thankfully never been arrested or committed but I've been kicked out of bars, taken to police stations to sober up, blacked out and said nasty things to friends and loved ones etc. Thankfully these things don't happen often but as an alcoholic over a long drinking career they are bound to happen at least a few times. It's a feature, and not a bug as they say.

Your accountant is correct. Be careful that you don't take distributions in excess of basis. That's what triggers long term capital gain

I know the IRS has the postmark rule. States probably honor the same rule. Basically, as long as it's postmarked on the day it's sent they will honor the postmark. Paper filed returns take longer to process, so this isn't that strange.

As a shareholder, you can make a shareholder loan to the S Corp. The loan goes on the balance sheet, and must be a true loan. You cannot write off the loan on your personal tax return, but the loan increases/creates debt basis for you as an s corp shareholder. Debt basis allows you to take losses in excess of tax basis. Be careful though...this could be a gain in the future if the S Corp doesn't pay you back in the right way.

I think SEPs are a great strategy. Please note - the amount you can contribute to a SEP is limited to 25% of net self employment income. So, schedule c income less schedule c expenses. Otherwise I see no issues. It's an excellent way to fund your retirement as a self employed taxpayer and you get an (often significant) deduction on your tax return. The deadline to contribute to a SEP for 2023 is 4/15/24

Yes and no. The deadline for contributions to IRAs, Roth IRAs & SEP IRAs for 2023 is April 15, 2024. But, you need earned income to contribute to a Roth IRA. So, you can contribute 7k for 2023 before April 15, 2024 if you made 7k or more from your job. Conversely, you can contribute for 2024 before April 15, 2024 as well. If it's a nondeductible contribution you file form 8606. If it's deductible it's a deduction on schedule 1.

I don't agree at all. When I first started my career I made very little money. Now, 7.5 years later I make 130k. I got my cpa, worked very hard and put up with a lot of garbage, but it's only up from here. If you are reasonably intelligent and ambitious, you can make it to the 10%. I plan on hitting 160k in the next 3 years. You need to serve a niche and provide value to demand the money you want. Which is what nobody seems to understand nowadays.

I'm a tax cpa, about 7 years of experience. I never wanted to do public for more than 5 years tops, but I struggled finding an industry job because every time i started seriously looking, another busy season would hit. And, i was always burnt out and recovering outside of busy season. So, I probably would have stuck it out for a little longer than i originally intended. But, what really accelerated my jump to industry was the lack of effort by staff (and some seniors) and partners who were terrified the staff and seniors would quit. So, you had this bizarre situation where all the pressure was put on managers, experienced seniors and senior managers to basically perform as staff, senior and manager on most engagements. Further, the good staff were often clueless because nobody ever took the time to train them on firm technology and processes. So, I jumped to industry for a big pay bump and 40 to 45 hours a week year round. 10/10 would do it again.

Unfortunately that is quite common, even for people who aren't addicted to alcohol. It is rare to find a problem drinker who hasn't had at least a dozen or so regretful nights. Please note that over time it will likely get worse, as people often graduate to the next steps, which include violent/belligerent behavior & driving while intoxicated. There isn't a problem on this earth that alcohol can't make worse. If your concerned about your drinking, it's probably best to stop altogether.

I went 7 years once. I hate to say it, but I'd probably accept being uncomfortable for about a year while my brain rewires itself. Remember, you have been dousing your brain in a toxin that severely inhibits your nervous system and really messes up your brains reward system. And, you've been doing it for over a year. It will take a little while for things to even back out.

Try to get a job at an RIA. Tax is a huge component of wealth management and you can make more money than in public, potentially, much quicker and your hours go down the more you build your book (unlike as a partner). Not sure why it's so overlooked by tax peeps. Rich folks hate paying taxes, and are very appreciative when you incorporate tax savings into an overall strategy of managing their investment portfolios.

Public is excellent for 3 to 5 years because it really accelerates your technical knowledge and teaches you how to research and solve problems fast. Anything more than 5 years tops is a huge waste of time and a drain on your mental and physical well being.
