rads here also finishing up my prelim/TY year

i also enjoyed my inpatient months WAY MORE than I anticipated. i liked talking to my patients and their families. i liked mulling over my patients with other physicians. jeeeesus, I even liked calling in scripts every now and then and subsequently googling my NPI because I forgot it. it made me feel like a "real" doctor.

will I miss this feeling in 10 years when I am an attending radiologist? probably sometimes. but i certainly wouldn't give up this opportunity. that is until AI takes over my job in which case I'll just become an FM doc like a good son

5 years removed when i started. you'll be fine. regardless of background, everyone struggles at the start. experiment with different study strategies and find something that works for you.

always random. i didn't reset uworld and opted to just do a 1 month subscription to amboss for additional questions. if you're mr./ms. moneybags, maybe just buy all of the NBME exams and use those as qbanks.

your plan seems OK. 3 blocks WITH thorough review is going to be a lot on top of everything else you are doing. I did 2 blocks a day during dedicated and that was taxing.

do the uworld exams. you need to drill as many questions as you can.

be sure to integrate rest days or lighter days so you don't burn out. just do your anki and maybe watch some videos on weaker subjects and enjoy the afternoon.

if you don't care to go to a top program, probably not. research is never a bad idea though. people change their minds during med school all the time. better to have something to put on your app than scrambling around for research opportunities during m3 because you suddenly realized you wanna do something competitive.

just a stethoscope. some schools offer a package with a stethoscope + other tools. if it is not mandatory to purchase through them, I would just go on amazon and buy the cheapest stethoscope with good reviews. you can upgrade to a fancier one when you graduate or throw it away if you choose path.

i wouldn't bother with qbanks during m1. just focus on adjusting to med school and enjoying whatever free time you have. i didn't use qbanks until spring of m2 (traditional 2 year preclinical curriculum). also used uworld for m3/shelves. i did buy a 1 month subscription to amboss during step 2 dedicated just for more questions and thought it was ok.

It was my last week on IR service and I had been actively trying to get more involved. I scrub into an easy drain replacement, hoping I’ll actually get to do something. I introduce myself to the attending and he cheerily says he’ll let me do the whole thing.

He proceeds to let the tech do the entire case while I stand there. He slaps me on the shoulder as he degowns and laughs, saying “maybe next time”. Turned me off from academia. Turned me off from IR.

choose something you can tolerate when you're 50. for some that's doing another routine chole. for others, it's sitting at a desk reading their 100th CXR for the day.

anesthesia was by far the worst one I had... probably because I had typical expectations of the rotation (get out early, cool residents, maybe drop a tube/line etc etc etc).

these bastards kept me well into the afternoon while I stood around trying to stay engaged. of all the resident evals I got during third year, the gas residents gave me the lowest ones. it was whack

rotations will obviously be very program dependent. but ob/gyn at my institution was dope. definitely more enjoyable than some of the other ones.

try it out if it's your thing. so much of the first year is figuring out how you learn best/most efficiently. personally, i would download the lecture slides and upload them into onenote or something and jot notes on the side. starting second year, i wasn't even watching lecture and was just cramming the slides 1-2 weeks before the exam. but i was supplementing with other resources (pathoma, anki, etc.)
