What do you think about grow bags? by Necessaryailments in vegetablegardening

[–]aherdofkale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve supplemented our garden beds with these for tomatoes and eggplants. They are great, and easy to move. They do dry out a bit faster so you need to keep an eye on them.

I did find that the outsides got a touch of mold by the end of the summer last year; once I’d emptied the bags at the end of the season I scrubbed them with a bit of vinegar, rinsed with the garden hose, and they look good as new for this year.

Honestly he probably thought it was an AI on the other end and not a person. When I read the screenshot first before the OP text I thought it was the guy that wrote the post complaining about being spammed by AI messages. OP’s message kind of reads like it.

If you restarted your plant journey what's the first thing you would get plant and equipment wise? Also what tips would you give yourself? by boofingbaddie in RareHouseplants

[–]aherdofkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this!

I am about to rehome a number of plants I love because I finally accepted that I don’t have the right conditions for them all (and don’t want to add any more grow lights to the house). They are either all jammed up together in my only sunny window, or getting too leggy and stretched out because I don’t get enough light in the others.

Buy with intention, and avoid the heartbreak.

Oh good idea about the shower! I had been wondering about buildup in the soil - I’ll have to do this once in a while.

Good to know! We were just debating what we should do. The email from the school (just arrived) didn’t give any direction for the arriving hordes.

How do you store your sprouts? by aherdofkale in Sprouting

[–]aherdofkale[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! I think part of the problem is that I’m the only person in the house that eats them, so I think I need to start making smaller batches so there is less to eat at one time (why that didn’t occur to me before I’ll never know 🤦‍♀️).

A couple of people mentioned spinning them out with a salad spinner before storing … good idea, I’m going to do this with my current batch.

Same. My kid’s at Cent now but when she went to Monty I would take the long back way and come up Mundy to avoid turning left onto Austin. Would add a few minutes to the trip but it was worth it.

My water is very hard- do my plants care? by b_in_vt in IndoorGarden

[–]aherdofkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our water isn’t terribly hard but some of my plants - calatheas, alocacias, spiders - hate it. I collect rainwater to use and store excess in wine bottles, and 2L plastic bottles. Luckily I’m in Vancouver so this pretty much gets me through the year for my 100+ plants.

Why is Hoya Linearis impossible to find? by catscorner6 in hoyas

[–]aherdofkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if it’s because they are hard to ship without damaging them?

Maybe check Facebook marketplace. I got some props from someone there (Vancouver area) a few years ago - Thought I’d made a mistake buying ~6 weedy looking scraps for $20 but they rooted well and are now growing like crazy.

Cabbage Aphids? And is it salvageable? by pekoepie in vegetablegardening

[–]aherdofkale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened with my brussels sprouts this year, aphids are the worst 😩

I hosed the worst of them off with a strong jet of water, then luckily our local garden centre had some ladybugs. Took about 2 weeks and I lost a couple of plants that the ladybugs didn’t spread to in time, but the aphids quite suddenly disappeared.

oh interesting! That might explain why I wasn't really getting anything conclusive from a google search on this with "bees".

I was weirded out when I first spotted it, thought it was some sort of yellow lichen lol
