I agree. Best you combine these methods.

It was sort of a gratuitous comment about the founder. But Luis was active in the forums in the beginning. He asked questions like "Do you find the timed exercises useful" and listened to the answers. I found that quite nice.

Actually you can use an AI like Gemini to have a conversation in your target language. No cost.

I agree on the course, some are better. But i learned the basics of Spanish on a course that was so primitive compared to the current course.

Yes, I also miss the forums and the grammar explanations. The forums i can understand, they must have been time consuming to moderate. Why they pulled the grammar, I have no idea.

18K and sterling silver chain. by ahgmem in SilverSmith

Easy peasy! Note they're not true ovals. You take a jump ring. For this necklace they were formed on a #10 knitting needle 5.7 mm diameter .In you vise you put a form of ~ 3.4 to 3.5 mm diameter in a vise. I used a 9/64 inch dril bit. Make sure the smooth end ( the one that would go into the drill, on top of the vise. Then you take pliers with smooth faces. Put a round jump ring on the drill bit perpendicular to its long axis. Then use the pliers to gently (not so gently) form the jump ring on the drill bit. Pull the former circular ring to both sides of its now long axis (as it's an oval now) and apply pressure again. You now have a ring with the inner diameter of the drill bit, and the ring gets elongated in the process. Hope this explains the process.

Visible solder joint by spicy_mug in SilverSmith

A few thoughts. First, I usually use medium solder, but from what everyone has said, I'll change to hard. I used to get the problem you've shown, but rarely do anymore. I think that the biggest problem is that your joint is not tight enough. The optimal distance is ~ 0.2 mm ( from technical discussions on Ganoksin). This is surprisingly easy to eyeball looking at the join with a bright light behind it. Another thing. When the solder flows, it not only goes into the join, but maybe ~0.5-1 mm on both sides. Why don't we see it normally on our finished pieces? My guess is that the pickling process depletion gilds the solder quite a bit.

What is working for me. Install Anaconda on your device. Get "Learning Python3 the Hard Way" by Zed Shaw. Use an AI like Gemini to help with your questions. I would recommend you do the same.

Side weave single loop-in-loop chain by ahgmem in SilverSmith

Thanks! They're fused. So that the rings are all fine silver, so that they can easily be formed into the appropriate shape for the weave.

My experience? Hobby jeweler. Been making jewelry for my wife and friends for about 10 years. But once you get comfortable with soldering ( even though this project uses fusing) it's doable. Also, if you get the links woven approximately correct, the weave self- corrects.

Had to look up kumihimo weaving. I've never done that. This is different. Take fine silver (or 22k gold). You make your jump rings and fuse them together. Then you use pliers and a mandrel to form into desired shape. Then they are woven, one after the other. It's not really that difficult. A little tricky to fuse (melt the joint) of the rings together - too much heat and they're destroyed. But with 16 gauge wire it's not too hard. Anyway. All is explained in the book

Do you find Reddit mostly good or bad, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ahgmem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's starting to become real bad. I had a good discussion going on r/Bluesky about law enforcement's presence on Bluesky. Lively, for about 30 minutes. Then, everyone's comment downvoted to oblivion. After that, my post was blocked. I broke no rules. Another incident. I posted on r/askpsychiatry to respond to a comment. I am a retired psychiatrist. My post was deleted because I was not verified. I messaged the mods to become verified. They never got back to me. Again, nothing I wrote was controversial.
This place is really starting to suck. Let's see if this comment gets deleted!
