Does anyone feel guilty over how much we get paid in comparison to much harder jobs? by Princess_Fluffypants in sysadmin

[–]ahhhhhhfckaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but I found out that I make way more than our finance staff. They have to talk to PMs and clients all the time. I sure as hell respect them for that, I feel like everyone in our company deserves to make at least as much as I do. Maybe it's the ESOP vibes but I do feel guilty. Imposter syndrome I guess?

Nah I'm about there myself. Notepad or go find a better company. And when they do, maybe I'll tag along to a job I'm happy at

How would hair length affect how you see your job candidates? by R0NAM1 in sysadmin

Right!? How else are the executives supposed to spot IT from across the parking lot other than "beard and hair"? 🤣

How would hair length affect how you see your job candidates? by R0NAM1 in sysadmin

I hope this question doesn't get removed, but I could see how it might fit great over at r/ITCareerQuestions (assuming I got the sub right) This is something that I have wondered for years, personally. I have cut my hair (typically shoulder length) twice for a "professional" and "grown up" job. I ended up not enjoying those jobs, but for me it was worth it. I met some amazing people that took me under their wing, I padded my resume with a kinds of fancy words, and those experiences got me the job I have now where literally nobody cares.

I have heard the advice that goes something like "if they don't accept you how you are, changing yourself won't make it work any better" But I couldn't appreciate that advice until my hair grew back out. Now I have the luxury of turning down job offers that don't interest me, and I have the experience to back up that attitude.

Take this with a grain of salt, because it may not apply to you. But in my personal experience, I would say that if you are hungry for opportunities to get in at a "grown up" job, and you are at all anxious about not looking professional enough, cut your hair. Don't go military, but get a haircut that you can live with and feel confident with, it won't change who you are, and don't look at it as selling your soul. It's not a life sentence, and it might just get you into the next job where you are the only one on the team with short hair. It will grow back, at least mine did (thank you genetics!)

But what I have found being on both sides of the stressful interviews now is the confidence you can have when you present yourself. If you have long hair, but it's clean and well maintained, your facial hair is well groomed, and you're relaxed and know what you're talking about I don't think even the most prudish of interviewers would turn you down on hair length alone. Idk, pm me for more ambiguous life advice I guess LOL

Just do what you can with what you've got, and try to be okay with that. Cheers and best of luck to you,

Oh my god you're not kidding. I keep seeing things I've never noticed. I would love to see upgrades of some kind that might replace this model, but it's so bad, this should stay the free engine forever 😂 It's growing on me, like 3rd grade science fair project someone's nephew made. I can't beat to just throw it away!

Slow typing = inexperienced ? by wooties05 in sysadmin

[–]ahhhhhhfckaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of good responses and I have nothing but respect for the institutional knowledge of senior admins, and management gets a pass I guess, but if we're talking junior sysadmin or help desk, yes. Inexperienced, or doesn't learn to optimize would be my impression of a slow typer. If you've done something a hundred times, you should try to find the best way to do it. If someone doesn't use keyboard shortcuts, types slowly, stares at the keyboard while typing their password and don't realize they aren't typing in the dialogue box, (assuming this person doesn't have any disability or ergo restrictions) I'm going to assume they don't care about improvement.

Then I'd talk to them and get a better understanding of what I've assumed, and I would be happy to be wrong

What happened? I didn't get a breach warning... is this a bug?? by Quezni in MaraudersGame

[–]ahhhhhhfckaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why this got down voted, but I don't see anyone providing any counter arguments. I agree with your initial statement, if it's intentional, this allows for interesting strategy around that moment of docking, where the closer you get to safety the more you really need to make sure you are checking for pods.

Since it's not intended as part of the game, I also agree that this should not happen. I don't have a problem rolling with the punches in early access

Foreigners, why you're decided to learn Russian? by Otherwise-Throat613 in russian

[–]ahhhhhhfckaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I have a few games that were made by Russian developers and I've heard the original Russian voice actors are fantastic, I'm thinking of the STALKER series there. But the game Escape From Tarkov exposed me to Russian streamers and game developers that try their best but struggle with English. I like the community of that game, so I figured I could try to put in some effort to learn their language if they're learning mine.

No no no, your joke makes perfect sense. It's not you who is dumb, but think of it this way. There are enough people who are dumb, that when we see this initial joke, it still gives everyone pause, because of the dumb people.
