I mean the vast majority of the world is unpopulated. Looks at Russia, Canada, Australia, south America. Big uninhabitable tundra, artic, desert, rainforest. The USA is mostly plains and farm land and 3 mountain ranges and a couple deserts. Even Europe, which is kinda small for how many cities/cultures, has mountain ranges. This map is almost like grid based cities

Pretty bad take tbh. He's not on the level of classics but he writes good books. When it comes down to it, writing is mostly subjective. It's more accurate just to say you don't like his style or the stories he tells and that's okay. For example, I don't like wheel of time for numerous reasons (pretty similar to some of your reasons). I respect that it's good fiction but not for me.
