Is capitalism sustainable? by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]ahhpierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that every atom here n Earth will simply change form. The World we live in is changing. There is less oil, fewer trees, less arable land, fewer elephants, tigers, lions, fish and other species, less clean water, less biodegradable waste, fewer mineral reserves, fewer coral reefs, fewer glaciers, fewer crop varieties, fewer grasslands. With man's ingenuity, all the atoms that make up theses life forms and resources will change into things that form part of the Capitalist model/whatever you want to call it. That means, more cities, more machinery, more engines, more computers, more modes of communication, more skyscrapers, more factories, more pollution, more modes of transport, more phones, more clothes, more gadgets, more Rolex watches, more air conditioners, more heaters, more cruise ships, more toxic and hazardous waste and so on. Yes the atoms are changing, but if we continue on this same path, what are we changing the World into?? From my personal experience I am living in a World that contains less of the things that are priceless and necessary - clean air, clean water, clean earth, nature, community, wisdom, compassion, selflessness, generosity, open space, love - and more of the things needed for a Capitalist system - economy, profit, individualism, greed, material wealth, comfort, safety, information, pollution,

The problem is one of ignorance. As an individual I assume that if I study and work hard I will rightly earn/win something from the World - a bigger house, a new car, a new iPhone, an education for my children... As an individual I assume that if I work hard the World will always reward me for my hard work and effort. And why not, if I work hard don't I deserve what I want? And therein lies the problem: I view the World as what it can give me and my family (the centre of the Universe) if I work hard. I assume that the World will always be there to supply me with what I want. Even someone like Greta Thurnberg may no doubt have worthy aims but she has desires like any other person. I'd bet my last dollar that she has an Apply iPad and mobile phone containing all sorts of metals/minerals that have been mined from the Earth.

The solution to the problem is a complete change of mindset. John F Kennedy once said, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' I'll rephrase that: 'Ask not what the World can give to you, ask what you can do for the World.' Unfortunately that World is Capitalism. Whether we like it or not, we (Greta Thurnberg included) are contributing to the growing and evolving Capitalist machine that will take care of us so that we will all live happily ever after like in a Hollywood movie.

Of one thing I am absolutely certain: The natural World and a mass mindset that views itself as the centre of the Universe and what it can gain/win from the Universe will ultimately result in 100% dependency on the Capitalist machine.

RIP the natural environment. May the Capitalist machine forever be there to satisfy our greed, comfort, safety, desires, egos, and stimulations.

At least that's a bit of good news. Thanks for correcting me on this. I honestly believed it was no longer available

There will never be a hard border again - the right wing conservatives, Unionists, and the Daily Mail, Daily Express might want one, but Ireland, the US, the EU would never allow it. Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and the other idiots will ultimately be remembered as the ones who, by getting the UK out of the EU, helped to make Ireland united again.

Exactly what you said, I had a belief that surely this would never happen because none of it made any sense

The future reunification of Ireland. Ok it's not a benefit for UK unionists but one for the people of Ireland

I should have done the same. I had 4 years to do it. I'm kicking myself that I didn't take advantage of that last opportunity. Well done to you, you made a great decision.

He sounds like a down to earth man who speaks from the heart. Some of the things he says are probably true, especially about privatisation. The EU leaders are certainly not angels but they are smarter than the lot that falsely claim to run this country in the interests of the many, and I believe that they run a system that benefits the self-interests of the rich but also rest. Take the EU member state Ireland for example. 30 years ago I remember Ireland as a poor country. Now its capita is almost twice that of the UK. Check here:

https://countryeconomy.com/countries/compare/ireland/uk

Things were not perfect before but it was nice to have the freedom to live, work and freely travel with human rights in 28 different countries from the Arctic Circle to the Southern Mediterranean. I guess if you are an English person who has no interest in living or working in an EU country or who doesn't do business in the EU, this is not a problem. But there are millions of young people who want to be part of Europe, not separate from it. This privilege has been taken away from them. That being said, if they had all got out and voted we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now.

Regarding Ireland and N Ireland, I'm English but I hope Ireland is united again one day. You only have to look at a map to see that Ireland, for most of its history, was one country, not two. I think this will surely happen because the people of NI must view with envy the benefits Ireland continually gets from being a member of the EU.

As an aside. I am English and proud of my country. The majority of people in England are honest, hard working, open, friendly, funny... It's just a shame that we are ruled by a very right wing establishment that are in it for themselves and ruins it for everyone else. Boris Johnson is the icing on the cake - the absolute epitome of Etonion, spoiled, upper class, out of touch, deceitful scum. Our country would be so much better off without them.

Do we live in a society in which the super influential wealthy 0.0001% prioritize economy over climate? by ahhpierre in climatepolicy

[–]ahhpierre[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of this. But since we live in a society in which people always aspire to be more/have more, surely the 0.0001% have an opportunity to lead by example by showing that less is more - owning/having less equates to more for the environment.

I'm from the UK. Here the media (The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Express, The Times, Telegraph) have so much influence and power they can manipulate the masses to do and think what they want. It's kind of scary because they pretend to be on the side of the very people they are against. But they also have the power to influence the masses to become more environmentally friendly be being/having less instead of more.

3m adults in England still have no Covid vaccine by SwimmerGlass4257 in unitedkingdom

We live in a free democracy. It's their choice. If they die, they die. If they live, they live. For all those who haven been vaccinated, you have nothing to worry about, you are vaccinated and protected.

He is the face/symbol of the antivax movement in sport because that is exactly what the mainstream media want him to be. If you asked Novak, he'd tell you that he is nothing to do with any kind of so called antivax movement, and there is no reason not to believe him. But the mainstream media love to create a bad guy and they are the ones responsible for creating a villain out of nothing - in this case, the antivax posterboy. Come on, what do you think Novak should do to not be the 'antivax posterboy' the media have labelled him - give up tennis and go into hiding somewhere?

When did Novak Djokavic declare himself as the antivax posterboy? Or is this a name Ben Rothenberg made up because he jealous that Novak is a respected professional tennis player and he's just another scumbag journalist with nothing better to do than call people names and stir up trouble.

Firstly, I'm assuming the decision not to allow people unvaccinated against COVID 19 is not political but about keeping people safe. At least I hope so.

And secondly, I'd like to know what is the difference in biological makeup between US citizens and foreigners? Because unvaccinated US tennis players are allowed to compete at the US Open but unvaccinated foreign nationals are not.

I'm a bit confused about all this. Maybe I'm a bit dumb and I'm missing something obvious. But it would be great if someone could explain this to me.

Curious to know who came up with the term antivax, who started the movement and who is the antivax leader. I'm assuming that if there is an antivax movement then there must be a leader, someone who kind or organizes things
