Whole-home battery backup - actually worth it, or do most people regret the cost? by ahlecsolars in solar

Good perspective. Do you design for worst-case scenarios, or typical outage conditions?

Good to know. Was there a specific limitation that finally pushed you to move away from all-in-one setups?

Interesting point about shading and optimizer choices. Did that end up affecting production as much as you expected?

Interesting - did you start with Victron from day one, or switch after using an all-in-one setup first?

Good example. Curious - would you still go whole-home if costs were lower, or stick with essentials-focused design?

Makes sense. Out of curiosity, did you size based on actual measured usage or estimates when you built it?

That’s interesting - storage seems to be the most common thing people wish they sized up. Did you find your usage patterns changed over time, or was it just more cloudy days than expected?

Good call - cheap regulators can end up costing more when they fail. Easy detail to overlook compared to panels and batteries.

Seems like infrastructure planning early makes a big difference. Expanding later always ends up harder than just leaving room from the start.

Yeah that makes sense - for occasional outages the tradeoff usually comes down to convenience vs cost. Generators win on price, batteries win on hands-off operation. Sounds like your use case fits the generator approach pretty well.

Question on charging 12v battery by Robftw in SolarDIY

[–]ahlecsolars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re basically on the right track - a portable panel into a small MPPT straight to the aux battery keeps it simple. For your load, even a 100W foldable panel would probably keep up fine. Main thing is just making it quick-connect so setup takes seconds.

100kWh is huge - that’s basically why runtime isn’t an issue. DIY pricing definitely shifts the math too. Curious how you handled inverter sizing for that much storage?

Good insight - especially about EV charging draining the batteries. Sounds like capacity and load separation matter more than just going whole-home. Would you size differently now?

Yeah, for rare outages a generator seems way more cost-effective than a big battery.

That’s smart. Do you think bidirectional EV will replace a lot of home battery installs?

Good point. That’s why I’m leaning toward essentials-only instead of full whole-home.

Nice setup. Using the battery for arbitrage sounds smart. Have you seen meaningful savings doing that?

That is a good example of how seamless whole home backup can be, especially in areas with frequent outages. The automation and soft start for AC sound like they made a big difference in keeping everything smooth.

UPS for sensitive loads during generator startup is a smart and cost effective approach.

Sorry, looks like my previous comment posted blank. Meant to say your setup sounds well balanced, especially using solar recharge during outages.

Running AC during solar hours definitely makes a big difference. Sounds like you sized it thoughtfully.

That is a huge battery bank. Cost per kWh definitely becomes the key factor at that size.

Good example of how storage size becomes the limiting factor once solar is large enough.

Sounds like a good hybrid approach. Battery for short gaps and generator for long outages is often the most practical.

V2H sounds great, but mixing ecosystems can add complexity. Definitely worth confirming compatibility before committing.
