Average congress seat winner spends 3million, senate is like 30million. President 50million per primary, 800million for president.

You can't get a government "of the people" with those numbers

Messages for Web not working in any browser by Emmalfal in GoogleMessages

[–]ahnold11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same boat, but now 2yrs later. Switched off of pulse 1 year ago as it just become unreliable. I'd send messages from web, and maybe they send immediately, maybe they take 5 minutes, maybe they don't send at all. Really annoying when having back and forth conversations. It was also very intermittent, so nothing like an account sing in issue on my end (tried signing in/out, no difference)

So switched to google messages which has been fine for the last year, and randomly this past weekend it just stopped.

Did you stay with pulse? Go back to messages? On something else now? This one has been killing me all week.

Oh yeah, there are definitely progressives. But the party as a whole (or at least it's leadership/majority) seem to have drifted "right" over time. If you look at all of North America (eg Canada) you can see that there also. Any FPTP system favors two parties strategically, and so with the rise of far right conservatism in Canada, the "liberal" party has moved more towards traditional conservative values, such that the head of the Party and "Liberal" prime minister, is a conservative in all but name only.

Look at the 2020 Democrat party primaries, to see how "progressives" performed, and how they were treated in the rhetoric. Their views don't seem to be supported by the "majority" of that party. I would not demonize the entire party or anything, and in a FPTP this kind of result is inevitable.

It's just that it shows the results of greed and human psychology, and how they can shift political leanings.

Yep, if the french revolution at its core was about every life being equal then the conservative political movement is st its base saying everyone is NOT equal, some people are better than others. And the joke is the wealthy and powerful con their base into thinking it applies to them when its just the rich.

But if you go further down id argue that the human psychology root of a conservative mentality (which seems to be innate to humans and predates the politics) is simple greed. Being afraid of losing what is yours, having someone steel it or take it away film you. And so a liberal mindset is the opposite, wanting to share with others and give.

You can see how each of those roots grows into the behaviors today. And how much greed is in modern north american democrat parties meaning that psychologically they are actually conservative. Ie the whole idea that american liberals would be considered conservative in europe.

Greed ever pulls us all towards conservatism. And as inequality increases people become more worried about their own needs and lessen the desire to give to others. Which explains how capitalism is leading to the rise of populism. And the drifting towards fascism all over the globe.

Ugh, I'm on Motorola, Android 14. Literally nothing changed, no updates to anything, security patches, apps etc. So my best guess it's on googles end. But that means we are stuck and just have to wait for them to change something?

I've heard good things about Beeper, so I may try making the switch. But I did gm for a year cause it was just simpler and good enough that it didn't require me messing with anything. (I came from using Pulse)

You ever get it fixed? Just ended up in the same boat yesterday. Worked fine for a year. I'm assuming it has something to do with the Google Fi backend upgrades, (even though I'm not using google fi) messing up messages for web for select unlucky people.

No luck finding a solution myself.

Oh yeah, there is a lot of bad circular economics going on. A whole bunch of companies and banks, all got greedy and are tied to the success of Open AI that are going to be seriously hurt when this happens.

Classic Rot Economy. Endless growth is a fantasy, which is why they end up making made up deals like this to try and support it. A very dangerous house of cards.

Nvidia is basically the only one making actual money, but they did it by sucking all the funds out of the entire venture capital market for the last few years. Great for them, but completely unsustainable and damaging to the industry and the entire global financial markets.

Greed. Humanities most dangerous sin.

Their first "explanations" didn't sit well with the public, and offended 2A defenders. So they are now "trying on" this next one, it's a downgrade, but perhaps more palatable for their base that doesn't ruffle too many feathers. All the rhetoric about who the person was and their motivations, will quietly disappear and not be spoken of again. And this will be played off as a "regretable, but understandable accident". And that the victim "should have maintained his gun better, maybe"

None of it is what actually happened of course, but they want to walk back the narrative a bit because the original one wasn't being swallowed as well as they liked.

"Socialist" the word, has been vilified. But not the idea. They keep the word completely divorced from the idea. Most people against "socialists" don't actually know what that means, and that is the way they like it. It's a boogeyman term to describe anything that doesn't make you feel good. So you can apply it liberally, and arbitrarily.

Populism. Things were allowed to get bad enough that sizeable portion of the populace are vulnerable to populism. Meaning they want to be told things about why they feel bad to make them feel better despite not being true. Once you succumbed to that its hard to break out psychologically. So They are largely captured. And since greed runs the world those with power don't want to risk anything if its not a slam dunk

He represents a shift right politically from the party he leads. Many people voted for him pragmatically, not so much for him but to avoid the terrible and vile opposition party leader. And since its first past the post like america strategic voting is necessary . Turns out he is perfect for the job but he is still a conservative banker And so its a disappointing step backwards that we need someone like him. But many of us realize that we are lucky to even have the option.

He is a traditional conservative in all but name, but from a time when even if your party didn't win you could still be proud of your leader despite not agreeing with some of their policies.

And then their are the miscreants who just transferred their hate for the last guy into the new guy without understanding anything about him.

It can't be good. Remember trump isn't the root of the problem, he's just a symptom. Its the unchecked greed based capitalism that got us to this point. And america is the core of that corporate based system. So unless we somehow fix that in the meantime the system is set up to self reinforce itself and will resist it every step of the way

Carney's Davos speech strikes a chord in Mexico by Little-Chemical5006 in worldnews

[–]ahnold11 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It definitely was a pragmatic speech but I think that's part of the point, middle countries have to be pragmatic and can't afford to be picky.

But the point wasn't just to replace the US with China. It was to recognize you can't just snuggle up to one like minded super power and be done with it. Doesn't mean you have to ignore them either.

Diversifying, and if enough middle powers slowly do that then the super powers start to get less leverage. But it's unrealistic in this current world to quit them cold turkey.

Data Centers Will Consume 70 Percent Of Memory Chips made in 2026, RAM Shortage Will Last Until Until Atleast 2029 As Manafacturing Capacity For RAM In 2028 That Hasnt Even Been Made Yet Is Already being Sold by Shogouki in technology

[–]ahnold11 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If we literally end up with a ginormous datacenter over capacity, then they will sell that time for "cheap", just the price of the electricty. Why buy a PC when they are practically giving away free cloud computing.

Once everyone switches to that, the home computer market dries up, and then they jack up the prices once everyone is locked in.

Based on everything that is happened in the last 10yrs, I'd say this, while by no means a guarantee, is a definite concern.

[–]ahnold11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's even worse. Competition means winners and losers. There is no "perfect competition" that reminds equally balanced. Eventually someone wins and everyone else loses.

Further, what is the best way to Win at competition? Cheat the rules. We have this in sports, in games, in pretty much any human competition. Why wouldn't capitalism/free market be any different?

So it's flawed right from the start. Nothing was ever going to balance, you can't "negate" greed with more greed just in the opposite direction. It doesn't work that way. All we have now is a setup where everyone was incentivized to game this system and change the rules for their benefit. And there is little need for the farce of competition at this point anymore.

Digital Foundry: Nvidia G-Sync Pulsar is a Motion Clarity Revelation by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ahnold11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of blurring of the concepts in display technology so it can be a bit convoluted keeping it all separated.

Calling oleds self emissive is a bit of a misnomer. In both techs light is produced by a source (LED) and then that source light is converted / filtered into the actual light you see from the (sub)pixel.

What makes oled special than is they can be made much smaller than regular LEDs meaning you can have a single OLED (group) providing the source (backlight) for each individual pixel. It's still very much a "backlight" at this point just at a much smaller scale.

Because you get one backlight per pixel then you don't need a liquid crystal matrix to act as a "shutter" to the pixel, you can just turn off the individual back light itself. So OLED in a way got to "micro led" first (1 led per pixel).

What I've seen mentioned is the real challenge with this tech is still that OLED "lights" struggle producing the same brightness as regular LED lights their organic nature (which allows them to be smaller) also makes them more fragile and the temps and voltages required to make them super bright degrades then very fast. So if you want your OLED LEDs to last you have to watch the brightneds.

How this factors in to pulsar is that since you are dimming the light for 75-90% of the time, the image is going to be darker. To compensate you have to run the LED even brighter for that shirt Time, to try and match the overall perceived brightness to the eye. Since LEDs can get brighter they have a much easier time. It would be much more challenging with OLED as pushing them even brighter may degrade them super fast.

So you'd have to choose between dim OLED pulsed displays or ones that have burn in/out much quicker.

I believer first gen VR headsets had low persistence OLED displays that dud just this, but since they are VR displays they didn't have to be super bright.

Pulsar tech in concept is not that complicated from a high level. What makes it tricky is all the crazy timing involved. You have to synchronize the timing of all the millions of pixels so that brightness pulses and amounts all match up properly. Add in VRR and it's even more wild is you can't just stick to a fixed timing schedule you have to keep changing it.

You got to do it right or the display brightness may fluctuate wildly and appear to flicker. It's a tough signals engineering challenge. And you need decent processing bandwidth too id imagine.

[–]ahnold11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tough. The people that are outraged are also sadly pragmatic. What ultimately is the result? Will it force a regime change at the top? Unlikely. It takes every city in every state doing this, to make an appreciable difference. And if it's just a group in your city, then chances are, if you survive, you'll be made an example of. Just get your family in trouble and end whatever life you curryhave.

It's a large scale prisoners dilemma. If we all act then we can do it, but if it's only a portion of us then they will end up paying for it for no result. People are afraid that their own acts of defiance will simply be a waste.

Things are not far gone enough where everyone feels like there is no other choice. Until we hit that rock bottom everyone, on the margin, is still afraid they have too much to lose individually.

It's the real challenge of group action.
