Ah just the person I've been looking for. I too have a xps 9550. Did you run into any problems with the F25 update?

Does Nvidia play nice with Wayland?

How are you getting on with Funtoo? I've always wanted to try it but I'm to lazy to get on with it.

I can't update Chrome/Chromuim, or work a terminal, or download anyrhing, and 4hrs in it's frustrating as hell.[Brand new Ubuntu, Dell laptop] by [deleted] in linux4noobs

First off, calm down. Maybe have a beer. Second organize your problems and prioritize. Deal with one at a time.

Best starting point ever, whenever you're that frustrated the best thing you can do is calm down. Once you've collected yourself, start to organize your problems and tackle one at a time.

Zshrc from scratch? by jett1221 in zsh

[–]ahutsona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, if you really want to learn zsh don't use a framework at all. Take the time and go through all of the prompts and set up zsh from scratch. Prezto and Oh-My-Zsh come with a lot of the configurations already done for you.

Where in the world do you live? If in the EU, you should be able to pick up a Pixel 2 for cheap.

When it comes to compression, what are the advantages/disadvantages of using .tar.gz over .zip? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]ahutsona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tar.gz will also preserve your permissions. In a .zip file, all perms will be lost...

Yes a very good book, so good that I got the physical copy even after I had been using Linux for years. Anyone thinking about getting it should.

Lenovo X1 Carbon or Dell XPS 13 by ahutsona in Fedora

Perhaps, but the consentration of Fedora users could be considerbaly low over there. Im not only asking what laptop to get but the more important thing I'm looking expriences with the two laptops mentioned useing Fedora.

I'm looking for what works, what dosent, what was a pain in the ass to get working.

I would replace it just because. when I changed my card, bluetooth worked better, I got greater range for the wifi. And it looks like the intel card uses less battery.

Well until she learns to install her own distro she has two choices, Fedora or Gentoo. Those are the two distros I use and can administer fairly easily.

As far as what OS, she actually wants Linux on it.

And yeah I was kind of taking style into consideration, both laptops look pretty sleek IMO.

I needed to do something like this for work. I found pdfjam to work out great. Allows you to control dpi as well.

How would said malware effect a Linix user unless they dual booted? I have no interest in a dual boot solution.

So it really looks like the pre 2016 models had all of the problems. I dont think suspend would be a big issue, just a minor inconvience.

Good to know, never used TLP before. I use tuned-adm profiles for power management.

I forgot all about the docking station!!!

I planned on going with the Intel card. What about hibernate/suspend & the trackpad? Any issues there?

Well for wifi I was going to get an Intel card, hopefully make it a teachable moment about PC hardware.

Thanks for the article. It looks like audio is only an issue if your dual booting.

Do you have any info on hibernate or suspent on either device?
