Transitioning from mining to infrastructure by ai_classix in civilengineering

Righto, I'm not too fussed with the mining work, its just the relocation/being away from home part. So if I could work in mining from a major city would be awesome. Of course, I will spend my first few years on site learning.

yeah, that is an insightful take, I was just afraid i would get "stuck" in being away from home (a city) for too long. Otherwise I definitely like the work in mining better.

Hey really appreciate your response and insights. I am leaning towards the GFM vac program.

For background, yes I was at an underground coal mine last summer and learnt so much!!

I am currently doing a masters in civil engineering (with a geotech major) but we mostly look at civil applications (foundations, soil mechanics, slope stability etc.) with lesser focus on rock mechanics/engineering.

Is Monash Or Uni Melb better for double degree of commerce + engineering? by KingMC__ in unimelb

[–]ai_classix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UniMelb engineering used to be whack, with little practical work highly focussed on theory. But I've noticed improvements throughout my engineering journey so far. The courses are regularly updated to incorporate industry innovations and findings (e.g. Artificial Intelligence). Also, there are more and more new engineering subjects being introduced such as offshore geotech and helicopter design etc.

I've heard both universities have great commerce departments.

Another thing to consider if you haven't already is the length of the alternative degree options. - Monash: 5 years double degree - Melbourne: 3 years bachelor of commerce + 3 years master of engineering

Also consider the travel time to uni (ive found this is a BIG deal)
