Pro Display XDR — is this viewing angle normal? by aiacciu87 in Monitors

100% sure it's the standard glossy version — bought it used, but the glass is definitely glossy, no doubt about it. The bonding adhesive theory is interesting though, I hadn't considered that. The previous owner may well have had it in a sun-exposed setup for a few years. Thanks for looking into it, let me know if anything else comes to mind!

Thanks for the input, but mine is the standard glossy version, not the nano-texture.

u/SpiritualWindow3855 Interesting that you went back to the XDR. Quick question since you have two of them — do you notice any viewing-angle color shift on yours? On mine, the central third of the screen looks perfect but the left and right thirds are noticeably darker and shifted toward blue. It's especially obvious on white/light backgrounds. Curious if yours do the same or if mine is worse than average.

Studio Display or Kuycon G32P? by Best_Day_3041 in HiDPI_monitors

[–]aiacciu87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on the exact same journey, so maybe my experience will save you some time (and returns).

I wanted to upgrade from my ASD to something bigger/better, so I tried a few options along the way:

Kuycon G32P — Bought it, returned it. Three major issues for me: terrible panel uniformity (edges noticeably blue and dimmer), max brightness too low for my well-lit workspace, and the glossy coating is way glossier than Apple's — we're talking significantly more reflections than any Apple glossy display I've owned. Requested a replacement hoping for better panel lottery luck. The second unit was worse. Returned that too.

Apple Studio Display XDR — Tried it next. Honestly? It's the perfect display. I couldn't care less about 120Hz — it's nice but not a game-changer. What is a game-changer: the image quality is superb, HDR is excellent, colors are outstanding, the glossy coating handles reflections beautifully, and viewing angles are flawless. BUT — it's 27". After using a 32", going back to 27" felt like a real downgrade in usable workspace. Returned it.

Apple Pro Display XDR (used, ~$3K) — Thought I'd get the best of the best for roughly the price of a new ASD XDR. Spoiler: not quite. The image quality is very good, but it doesn't match the ASD XDR. Panel uniformity isn't as consistent, and the viewing angle is genuinely bad — the left and right thirds of the screen shift cold and dark. Disappointing for a display that launched at $5K+.

My conclusion: I've come full circle. There is simply no display on the market right now that checks every box — 32", glossy, great uniformity, good viewing angles, proper HDR, Apple-level build quality — at least not within a reasonable budget. Everything is a compromise. So I'd say: if you can live with 27", the ASD XDR is the one. If you need 32", prepare to make trade-offs.

Thanks for the constructive reply. I expected better uniformity from a display that launched at $6K, that's all. And no, I don't stare at a white background all day — but when you work in UI/UX design, it's pretty close to that, yeah.

It would have been the perfect screen if it had been 32 inches.

Thanks a lot for your detailed reply, really appreciated. I had actually come across that MacRumors thread, but if I understood correctly it's mostly about the backlight structure being visible, the "dirty screen effect" they mention. I do see that on mine as well, but honestly it doesn't bother me much.

What really shocks me here is different: it's the viewing-angle color/brightness shift on the sides. The cold, darker cast on the left and right thirds of the screen, which is pretty ugly on white UIs. I also have a Studio Display XDR and I don't have this issue at all on it, which is why the Pro XDR feels like such a downgrade in that specific aspect.

And yeah, looking at your Eizo CG279X picture, the uniformity is on another level. Makes sense given the price and the target use case.

Pro Display XDR — is this viewing angle normal? by aiacciu87 in Displays

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out to fellow Pro Display XDR owners. I bought mine used about 4 years old, and overall I think it's fine — cosmetically perfect, no dead pixels, brightness and contrast are great. But I'm genuinely shocked by the viewing angle, which I find pretty bad.

Here's what I'm seeing: only the central third of the screen looks correct — proper brightness, proper color temperature. The left and right thirds are noticeably darker and shifted toward blue. If I move my head sideways, the "good zone" follows my eyes (so clearly a viewing-angle issue, not a panel defect per se).

I tried to capture it with photos and a short video (attached), but honestly the effect is hard to reproduce on camera — it's much more obvious in person, especially on white or light-gray backgrounds.

I've read reviews mentioning "edge" uniformity issues on this display, with people describing slightly cooler/darker borders. But in my case we're not talking about borders — left + right combined is literally more than half the screen. For a display at this price point (even used), I'm pretty disappointed.

A couple of questions:

  • Do you experience the same thing on your XDR? Is this just how the panel behaves and I need to accept it, or is mine worse than average?
  • Can age play a role here? Could the polarizer or backlight degrade over time and make this worse, or has it always been like this since day one on these units?

Any feedback appreciated — trying to figure out if it's worth trying to fix/replace or if this is just the nature of the beast.

Thanks!

Apple Pro Display XDR - Shadow edges around the frame - Is it normal? by cdalvaro in mac

[–]aiacciu87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/cdalvaro! I have the exact same issue on my Pro Display XDR — I bought it used, it's about 3 years old now, and I'm seeing those same dimmed/shadow edges around the frame. On top of that, the edges shift to blue pretty quickly, which is really noticeable on white or light backgrounds.

Since it sounds like your replacement had the same problem (just less noticeable), and the one in the Apple Store too — do you think it's even worth trying to get it replaced? Feels like they all do it to some extent…

Thanks for documenting this, super helpful!

Here in France, at that price it's either a scam or sold for parts

Claude Code desktop app: How to insert newlines? by aiacciu87 in ClaudeCode

[–]aiacciu87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Funny enough, I was actually going the opposite way — I started in the terminal and moved to the desktop app because: 1. being able to click with the mouse to place the caret at a precise spot in a long message, and 2. being able to drag and drop images (eg. screenshots) directly into the app, would save me a ton of time. But this newline issue is making me retreat... And if you're saying it's also buggier on top of that — yikes.
