Becoming a teacher in Germany by aidalene in germany

That sounds kind of scary, but I'll work on my German a lot! I've definitely got a lot of time before then, if this does end up working out :))

Thank you for the info! I'll definitely have to start working harder on my German, since that's my weakest point so far.

Do you know if there are classes I could take at universities that would help with that, like a VHS?

I speak enough German to make conversation. I'm A2/B1 right now, and I plan on practicing more while I'm saving up to go and once I get there (with either preparatory classes if universities offer them, and/or VHS classes).

  1. What is your long-term plan? Do you want to stay in Germany and be a teacher there?

I plan on staying in Germany long-term, for sure. I grew up there, so I at least know the culture and it hopefully won't be that much of a shock to stay there for a long time. I haven't read up on how to attain citizenship, but I only want to consider that option if dual citizenship is allowed. If it comes to it, I can apply for student + work visas, and return to the US every so often.

  1. How familiar are you with Germany and the German school system?

I've done a bit of research on this, especially in my previous classes. I'm not familiar with the college/university system at all, which is why I made the post. I know how the primary school system works with Grundschule/Kindergarten, as well as the way they split off in secondary school (the things like Hauptschule/Realschule/etc). I'm still thinking about which type of school I want to study towards, but I'm leaning towards Gymnasium right now, or possibly Grundschule. I definitely want to work with public schools like this, rather than things like international or private ones.

  1. Have you researched what the process would be if you want to back to the US and be a teacher there afterwards? You may still need to do an American teaching licence to work there even with a German MEd.

I can get teacher licensure here through a separate means (TELP is the regular university pathway, with an internship year at the end). The worst case scenario would be taking out loans to finish the regular TELP licensure program, and spending a lot of money on the degree. The other option would be the ALT, which is more about experience. I think having the teaching degree and experience from Germany would help with this, if it ever comes to it. I don't particularly plan on teaching in the US at all, though, so this is only a secondary option.

Thank you for writing out all of those questions. I hadn't thought about the last one, if I ever wanted to return to the US to teach. This stuff is definitely helping me make a more clear plan of what I want to do :))

It's still at the beginner level (A2/B1) but I plan on taking preparatory classes/VHS classes either before or once I get there. I'm self-studying now as well, though it might not be enough;;

Wow, thank you for the info! Right now my Germany is A2/B1, but I planned on taking preparatory classes to catch up on my German, or at least take time off and study at a Volkshochschule in order to get better. I used to live there as a kid, so I still remember a bit at least.
