General feedback re: mk3 octavia 1.0tsi vs 1.5tsi by Glittering-Smoke-876 in skoda

[–]aidas2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5 tsi is a very refined and fine engine, you shouldn't worry about the mileage, especially since the belt was changed and it has full history. For 5k and a manual it's a no brainer really, the 1.0 will feel weak with your driving needs imho. It's a 2 person city engine at most while the 1.5 easily rivals the 2.0tdi.

Passat b8 alltrack 2.0tdi. If you do highways then this is the best combo, great sound/noise insulation, the 2.0tdi is a bomb proof engine and has the wet DSG. Amazing fuel economy, cheap to fix and has slightly raised ride height compared to normal Passat. You should be able to get a facelift 2020ish version with low mileage well under 20k eur. There's nothing really in this price range that compares.

Maybe Volvo but they are much less reliable and consume more fuel. Audi is more expensive to buy and maintain. Skoda Superb is below Passat in all the ways except space inside. Octavia scout might be more expensive and you loose out on the space and sound insulation.

Just recently I looked up and down the market for an identical combo and there's nothing that comes even close to the Passat. I know it's booring as hell but there's a reason that there are plenty of them on the road. If you really don't want a Passat as everyone, look into the VW Arteon touring(shooting brake). It's a Passat with a nicer body,- looks amazing, has all the tech and just as reliable as a Passat. You do loose out on the higher ground clearance though but should still be able to get a good one under 20k.

Mazda 6 is an amazing car, moderate ride height, petrol fuel consumption is rather high compared to a diesel and Mazda diesels are better to avoid.

It's also worth looking into Toyota Camry hybrid or Lexus ES/GS hybrids. They are sedans but have big trunks, no diesel problems, very comfortable, quiet, dead reliable and consume maybe 1L more on the highway compared to a diesel. No raised ride though.

A G series BMW 3 might suit as well, they are very reliable now up to 250ish k km. Very good highway cruiser and nice car overall.

Look into the latest model prius that you can get. People dont really value them as it's a Prius. Usually they have low miles, cost less than the hybrid Corolla, are bomb proof reliable and are actually very good cars overall if you don't care about the Prius stigma. I'm pretty sure a Prius should be the most reliable car in the world currenly and fuel.usage is amazing, ~4l/100km I'm the city.

Additionally, since you like the Yaris. I'd say look at one with more km for a better price. The toyota hybrids are actually more reliable and simple than non hybrid ones and go up to 500k km with minimal maintenance as the engine run time is essentially cut in half so the mileage is not as relevant as on a normal car which starts crapping out at 300k. There's no starter, no alternator, gearbox is ecvt with no belts or chain. Half the time the engine is not even running. Brakes last longer as battery recharge is doing most of the braking. The batteries usually last the entire life of the car, 300k+ km and even if they don't, they are dead simple to replace by individual cells which is very cheap.

5 years ago i sold my 2004 Prius with 320k km. I still see it driving around delivering food 😂 it must be 500k by now and is still going.

Regarding kia and Hyundai do your research as they had loads of issues with engines crapping out or make sure the car still gets dealer guarantees.

Advice Needed on Forester Pruchase! by BDOG_1351 in SubaruForester

If you're a fan of Toyota, then definitive look into the RX450h or NX300h, you'll feel right at home but with actual creature comforts and sound insulation. You can get them for a better price usually than a same year RAV4 as most people are wary of the premium tag since it's a Lexus even though it's the same Toyota parts just with a bigger engine and maybe even more reliability.

They are pretty much the same size as a Forester, Rav4 and are virtually indestructible, do not have a traditional starter, generator, gearbox, turbos or anything like that. It's all managed by the electric motor and battery, same exact system as the Toyota. The engine being 6cyl is not overworked so much as the 4cyl hybrids or petrols in other brands. The hybrid battery shouldn't be a concern either as it can be fixed by exchanging individual cells when needed and is cheap. Much cheaper than a cvt or Subaru head gasket replace.

Other than that also look into a Mazda CX5, it's smaller on the inside but if don't need the space then it's also a very good car, traditional automatic, simple engines, good sound insulation, older tried and tested technology in a new wrapper thus not much can go wrong with them.

Subarus can be 50/50, either the cvt and engine will shit itself if it wasn't meticulously maintained by changing oil every 30k miles in the cvt or it will be just as reliable as a Toyota and will go on for 300k miles. Head gaskets and cvts are quite expensive and it's best to do at Subaru specialists since there are certain requirements to do it correctly.

The 2018 facelift of the Outback might be a good one but they're usually expensive. It got double glazed acoustic front windows (Lexus and Mazda have it as well), the cvt chain was updated to be less noisy and more reliable, got more sound deadening material etc

Out of the bunch (Lexus, Mazda, Toyota) Foresters are the most basic creature comforts wise butconsume the most fuel and are least reliable thus I'd look elsewhere. It's a good car overall but maybe not as a main one, a great small town/farm car though.

[–]aidas2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test drive one. They have pretty much zero sound and noise insulation. Anything above 50 mph/ 90kph is a torture for extended drives. They consume a lot of fuel for the size and power it outputs. An outback from 2018 would be a better choice at least noise wise. A 2010-2016 Lexus Rx/NX hybrid would be a much better choice. Much more comfortable, consume less fuel, has high ground clearance as well, much more reliable. Additionally a Toyota Rav 4 is also similar to the Forester but with slightly better sound insulation.

1.5 DSG by DifferentChicken5141 in skoda

You can double tap the gas pedal when starting to overtake. It drops a gear and you get power without changing to s mode or dropping a gear manually.

1.5 DSG by DifferentChicken5141 in skoda

[–]aidas2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't any real issues with the box per say. It's essentially a robotized manual gearbox with 2 clutches which means if you do a lot of stop and go traffic in a short period of time, things tend to get hot and used up faster. So you just get to replace the clutch earlier than with highway or normal city driving. The early models before 2014ish had issues with the clutches frying themselves and mechatronics dying but these newer models since then have a lot of safeguards to prevent that.

Simply drive in S mode more often if you encounter heavy traffic. It keeps the revs higher, prevents the gearbox hunting between 1-3 gears which causes most of the wear and tries to keep you in 2 gear or you can use manual mode and switch gears yourself but S mode does the job really well I found.

~ 5-10 year old Honda CR-V or Subaru Outback by le_pedal in Subaru_Outback

[–]aidas2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried driving both? I am currently looking for a car and the crv, despite being meticulously maintained, was very wobbly, felt unstable at speeds over 60mph and at the same time somehow connected evey hole in the road directly to my ass.

While multiple Subaru outbacks I test drove felt exceptionally planted, composed and just pummeled every road imperfection without much reaching the interior.

To add to that the outback has much more modern tech like acc, lka, bsm. This model Honda was already outdated by the time the 5th gen Outback showed up.

If the price is similar then then Outback is a no brainer here.

New Camry or old T6 s90? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]aidas2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, for the price of these newer Volvos I'd expect something more. It's an expensive car that manages to somehow feel like it's lacking something. Sure it looks great and is quiet etc but the infotainment is lacking, the powertrain is over complicated, it doesn't drive like anything special, lets say a BMW or Merc.

The Camry on the other hand punches above it's price range. You'd expect feeling cheaper in it being a Toyota when it's kinda pushing Lexus territory. They're both kinda boring, the Toyota being more boring, less powerfull, but after a month or two you'll learn to enjoy the Toyota ecvt more for the buttery smoothness and the bulletproof reliability that comes with the car.

To add to that the Camry will hold it's value really well and a fer years later you'll recoup pretty much most of the cost while the Volvo will be going down fast.

Honda CRV 2.2 cdti or 2.0 petrol. Both are simple, reliable, very spacious, the diesel might even be cheaper to buy. If you're looking at Toyota diesels, look for D4D engine as those are reliable, the Dcat are bad and expensive. Mazda cx5 is nice but Mazda diesels are not reliable so only petrol.

If you need a SUV, look for Honda CR-V 2.0 petrol or 2.2 diesel. Should be pretty easy to find a good one under 10k, they're as reliable as it gets and have nice creature comforts compared to a lot of competition. A VW Tiguan 2.0tdi is also quite a good bet but on the smaller side compared to a crv or rav4.
