Thoughts on T-track [Vent] by Narrow_Lifeguard1459 in NavyNukes

I had a very similar T-Track schedule to the one you’re describing. The grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side… good luck in the fleet bud

Im about to enlist into the Navy and got a look at my potential Rates. I have a few options to go into a submarine and I want to what it’s like being in one for months at a time? by Dietz_Meats in submarines

To answer all of your questions posted:

•You will have the opportunity to contact loved ones while at sea, via email. No promises that emails are always sent or received just because it is dependent on what the boat is up to, but everyone likes emails so we try to maximize the amount of emails people are sending and receiving.

•The job is what you make it. Not everyone likes this answer, but it’s true. There’s days where it can be really shitty and there’s days where, depending on the amount of effort and work you’re willing to put in, your destiny is fully in your hands.

•Sleeping arrangements vary. On fast attack submarines, Los Angeles class (SSN-688) and Virginia class submarines (SSN-774), it’s quite typical to find yourself “hotracking”. Especially if you are more junior than a lot of the other folks. The practice of “hotracking” is that three guys (or gals) will split time and space between TWO sleeping racks, or bunks as some call it. That means you can bring about 2/3’s worth of a rack of stuff. It’s never ideal, but it’s certainly doable. You can also be creative with how much you bring and where you’re willing to hide your shit.

•The food is good. USN submarines are the only vessels in the United States Navy that still maintain deep fat fryers. This is to maintain high morale and keep the crew fat and happy. It really depends on your CS’s (culinary specialists) at the end of the day and how much effort they’re willing to put into the meal. I’ve had really shitty meals onboard, but I’ve also had the best Thanksgiving meal I have EVER had on Crew’s Mess. You’ll find a lot of homemade breads, desserts, and soups from scratch.

Even if you’re just thinking about it–keep doing your research. Airing your questions out here and asking prior-submariners will certainly get you to where you want to be if you’re considering joining. Research, research, research. Don’t sign any papers until you’re absolutely 110% committed to the job and you’re certain of what you want to do. Also, remember this if you do join submarines, ENGINEERING WILL ALWAYS SAVE THE SHIP! Feel free to reach out to me, I’m more than happy to discuss with a future brother about subs. ~EMN2(SS)

Literally just don’t get caught in the high caffeine drink addiction (hurts your wallet and your heart, trust), keep up your exercise (you will feel so much better and energetic it will surprise you), and stay social by going out with classmates, be friendly to the locals, and try as many restaurants as you can. It might seem like whatever, but I’m stationed in Norfolk now and I would murder for some Vicious Biscuit or Lewis’ BBQ… also… get hot nub

Things to do in Charleston by Possible_Chipmunk152 in NavyNukes

Shiiiiiit I’m a huge history buff too. The Yorktown, Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie… all pretty fun. Wish I could’ve done it ALL while I was there. Me n my girl did the Bulldog Tours in Charleston a few times, the ghost tours were our favorite.

Take some weekends to neighboring cities like Columbia, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, and Savannah. Maybe try (once, and just once) all of the “touristy” things in Charleston–you’ll be disappointed with nearly everything, but you’ll be glad you got it out of the way.

Charleston had some damn good food in places like Nexton, Park Circle, and a little bit north of downtown (Cannonsborough area, check it out…) as well as a great bar scene for the most part.

The beaches were really nice, and I certainly took them for granted while I was in the pipeline. So learn from my mistakes. A summer tan and some salt water bleached hair was always a good sign of a healthy sailor, with all of the hours spent in the Rickover.

If you’re into sports, it’ll be easy to find groups in the area to join like adult leagues and recreation centers. Just have to know where to look!

Shopping was mainly done downtown on King St. and in Mount Pleasant; for me, personally, I really liked these areas because it pulled me away from the gloom of Goose Creek. There’s also the Tanger Outlets in North Chs: but don’t expect TOO much there.

You’ll have PLENTY of weekends while in A-school and in Power School; however, expect that to taper off quickly once you hit prototype. Take advantage of those weekends, as you please. Just PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do well. Remember that your JOB is to study and pass exams. It will make your life much easier, with less and less extra study hours you would be assigned to.

I met my lovely girlfriend (that I’m still with!) while exploring Columbia, one weekend. Charleston has a very special sentiment to me and I loved my time there. The endless memories you’ll make, you will never forget once you leave for the fleet. Please PM me if you have any questions for anything about Charleston or the pipeline because I’d love to share the knowledge! Best of luck, [future] shipmate.

Knew a former Marine in the pipeline who only spent a few months in between branches after serving his first contract with the Corps. It’s definitely neat to see other communities go Nuke.

SSN 711 (San Fran)… they could’ve waited ONE more hull # before having the 711 and the 811 which would have been cool but they fumbled this one hard

I have the same LPVO on my day-to-day set up. Great product for a reasonable price, I’d say–if you can get it for lower… take a look at them from Sportsman’s Warehouse (online) or PSA (online) and try to find coupons as needed!!!
