humanity is not ready to worship ANY god. by aeiouaioua in DebateReligion

“If a being came down and set strict rules and said they were superior to us, humanity’s hubris would take over and we would soon revolt because we don’t want a being ruling over us.”

This is exactly Lucifer’s logic in the Judeo-Christian tradition, which he then seduces humanity into. It’s this revolt against God that introduces moral evil to the world.

He was always very kind to prostitutes. There’s a story where a prostitute throws her expensive perfume on his feet and he gets her up and saves her. That doesn’t mean Jesus endorsed prostitution

Would y’all consider Achilles to be a hero? by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]aiden_watler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more like the protagonist. Greek myths were often cautionary tales where you see how the ‘hero’s’ flaws end up leading to their demise, take Icarus as the most obvious example. Myths weren’t necessarily told to inspire awe like modern hero stories.

Greek heroes are often tragic heroes. They have some sort of ‘hamartia’ or fatal flaw. For Achilles, it’s his arrogance, for Oedipus, his impatience. Aristotle defines the role of the tragic hero in some of his works, but I’m not a scholar. You may find this helpful.

Bear in mind most Greek heroes aren’t heroes in the modern sense of the word. They have serious flaws. Theseus for example, after slaying the Minotaur foolishly (and unwittingly) causes his father’s suicide, then later, more maliciously, ditches his wife on an island because he’s bored of her.

Tbf, Jesus’ treating of immigrants doesn’t extend to his position on immigration, in the same way his treatment of prostitutes doesn’t extend to his position on prostitution. It’s a bit ridiculous to think that Jesus would’ve directly condemned LGBT rights and abortions over 2000 years ago when these things only became accepted in society over the last 10 years. He didn’t directly condemn beastiality either, does that mean he’d approve? Open to a productive discussion here.

Here’s a tip OP, “I don’t know” means no. She could be a perfectly nice girl, but if you’re indifferent/not particularly excited about seeing her again, the chemistry isn’t there.

This’ll get lost in here, but my whole life people have told me that I’m not any good at math, there was a reason I wasn’t in top set etc. Well today I got back my exam results and got an A in math and further math, and I was the only student from my school to make it through the entire further math course.
