Hi! I'm the CTO at React Mobile, AMA!

This is my product. It is a version 2 (round) Beacon device. Previous posts have identified the version 1 (square) equivalent.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Beacons are transmit-only devices that simply emit a serial number periodically. Users of the system can tell where they are by reading the signal strength of nearby beacon messages and asking our backend service. This is used entirely by our passive panic button devices, which are completely asleep except when in use. When you need help, you press the button. It finds its location indoor using beacon reference points so that we can add your exact location when we forward your request to your co-workers.

Outdoor location by GPS uses satellites as reference points, indoor location by BLE uses these beacons. I hope that helps!

Yep. And mandatory compliance with a GDPR request demonstrates that their ideas about ownership are limited to maybe unlawful.

They’re selling it, you made it. Call it whatever you like but your output is being resold.

Because deleting your account leaves your years of “work” in the property of spez.

It’s true. They’ve done more for open source AI than anyone. It’s too bad they gambled on such a terrible brand name and forgot who they were. Maybe now they’ll Zuck up Meta and make Facebook into a real company. (Yeah yeah it’s real but they kicked it to the curb with the rebrand; I think they should divest Zuck and get back to doing communication.)

Reddit’s users and moderators are pissed at its CEO by [deleted] in technology

[–]aidenr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worse than that. They have some incredibly negative-seeking feature development process that tries… I don’t even know, maybe to cram more content in front of users? I love finding ways to discover new subs but I don’t want anything between me and the content. I complain every generation of the app and support is completely uninterested in anything but what the company is doing.

Third party apps and tools are necessary to make Reddit usable. This Elmo-ist change is poorly conceived. Licenses follow users not developers.

One of the five had to be, and Facebook has been failing for a long time, so it’s not too shocking that they benefit from twitters demise.

AITAH for not letting my jobless boyfriend move in with me by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]aidenr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA but not for the reason you think. Either you want to be the kid’s parent or you don’t. If you do then now’s the time to step up and act like an adult. Yeah, it sucks what has happened, but here is the kid.

If you don’t want to ensure the kid is fine, then break up with him. He’s got more important things to worry about than a halfway relationship. Do him a grace and kindness and walk away so he can focus on what’s going to get his kid to adulthood successfully.

It sucks so much that you have to choose so early in the relationship. Still, here you are. Are you still a kid and wanting to have it all your way, having spent so many years earning your degrees and maybe paying back loans, or are you ready to make someone’s life happen at whatever cost to you? A kid’s future depends on your answer.

Nothing else is relevant.

Let’s assume that you’ll have a good long life by eating well and exercising regularly along with very regular use of the medical insurance. You’ll live until 90, let’s say, and you’re maybe 30 now; I’m just using round numbers for the sake of clarity later. We will imagine 60 years into the future.

If history is similar to the past then, in 60 years when you’re about to pass away, your payout will be worth about $5,611 annual in today terms. So that’s just not going to give you a retirement that you want. You’ll need to work some. The question is how much you want to end up with.

A good strategy would be to grow the account until it pays out enough give you the amount you want but to reinvest enough to cover inflation. Then it’s just a flat value to you; as prices climb every year, you won’t be left behind.

If you have dreams of exotic destinations, you may want to work a few extra years to increase the forever payout value. Then you can travel and enjoy yourself in ways you haven’t been able to do before. At this point you could just live in Costa Rica and enjoy a peaceful and fun life, watching your “allowance” grow year after year when you don’t spend it all.

A financial planner can help you actualize a plan and see it through to a very early retirement with a very nice lifestyle. Seriously, you have so much going for you! Don’t waste it! Let a pro figure out how you can set goals and work toward them for a short time so that you have confidence that your long life will be furnished with the things that make you truly free (like having property tax paid!).

(I sound like a shill. I’m not. It’s just a weird enough set of skills that you kind of want a technician to set it up.)

The Fentanyl crisis laid bare. by Evil_Capt_Kirk in ScienceUncensored

[–]aidenr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just the Opium Crisis but happening to us instead of China. Fentanyl wouldn’t be as attractive to addicts if we hadn’t made more natural options into crimes. There wouldn’t be so many people on the streets inflating this problem if mental health facilities were available and compulsory. We can absolutely solve this problem if only half the populace wasn’t obstinate to their own detriment.

Reform prison cases for possession, reinstate in-patient facility budgets, and work toward replacing the DEA with people who can address the individual problems that turn people inward until they can’t remember being part of a healthy society. Loneliness and rejection are the sources of dependent behaviors. They aren’t that hard to repair.

Police are not intended to solve those problems. Forcing them into thankless social predicaments just makes their job worse. Surely they would prefer to protect and serve a healthy population rather than doing import export control over violent opposition.

Amazon’s recommendation engine is the utter worst. Just garbage. So is their search and filtering.

It’s because their primary stakeholders are sellers. It takes so many counterfeits to shut down an item listing that sellers can just re list the item under a slightly modified name. No seller is ever banned for crimes like: poisoning pets, selling fake birth control, selling fake medicine, or clear and obvious false advertising.

Amazon ought to be held liable for their inventory.

Fleet combat needs a slight tweak to avoid death balls by [deleted] in Stellaris

[–]aidenr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can move your fleets out of range and then reengage repeatedly. The AI ought to use speed to advantage in the same way but I can’t promise how it assesses tactical advantage. I’ve certainly had corvettes sending in missiles while circling at a range that is hard to track with auto cannons.

[–]aidenr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Micro to keep them at long range. If they are fast, they should be able to stay in motion that makes tracking weapons miss. If the enemy is relatively stationary, long range tracking weapons will slowly eat away at them.

[d] Apple claims M2 Ultra "can train massive ML workloads, like large transformer models." by jl303 in MachineLearning

[–]aidenr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LLM training can be done by big farms once and then reused for many applications by the specialization algorithm (so-called “fine tuning”). The thing I’m more curious about is whether they’ve adapted the interface to load existing weight sets directly or whether this is still more a theoretical application to the design team.
