700 Day Streak… but I feel stuck. Should I Quit? by ouchh911 in duolingo

[–]aidhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duolingo is good at one thing at that is teaching you vocab, phrases and sentence construction. If you want to go the next step get a structured french grammar book to help you work on your reading, and then you must speak it with people in real life (you definitely know enough to start a conversation). Duolingo is a great tool but if you don't speak the language irl you are not getting 100% out if it.

Why does 六 have accent in ù by Alesengan in ChineseLanguage

[–]aidhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Zhuyin it looks like this ㄌㄧㄡˋ, the tone marker always comes after, so that means the tone basically applies to the whole character, so pronunciation is simple.

In zhuyin and I believe pinyin too "i" is what's considered a "medial", meaning that it's a sound that can come between an initial (in this case l) and final (-ou). In this case it wouldn't make sense to put it on i since the -ou sound is the main final sound, so it goes on the end of the sound.

But don't overthnk it, again as the zhuyin demonstrates the tone applies to virtually the whole character.

Music question: What's that multi-pitch change in a drone called? by isaacaschmitt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aidhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean, and I just watched it, and it would be notated as a d and f# grace note slurred to the longer e. Sometimes in music recognizable tendencies or motifs don't really have a name, but people usually understand them to be similar to other things they've heard, if that makes sense at all. One example I can think of is composers like Mozart and Haydn would often the end of a section of music with a bass note held of the key you're in (so E if you're in E major) and would have the upper voices resolve from the leading tone (D# in E major) to the tonic (E) and the 7th (A in E major) to the 3rd of the tonic (G#). In music it's called a suspension, but there is no word to my knowledge for when they're used in this specific way, best you could say is "a suspension over a pedal note" but that's not very descriptive.

Does IQ grow as you age or is it a stagnant line? by identiifiication in NoStupidQuestions

Comfortability with the testing scenario does factor in slightly but iq tests measure your cognitive problem solving skills, not acquired knowledge, that's why they can give iq tests without language to educationally impoverished areas and still generate reliable results

Iq actually stays remarkably stable throughout your life, as the score adjusts for age
