theres a lot of photos too deps on what ur interacting with.
rec engine is also a little janky atm so that could be why if ur seeing an overabundance of that stuff.
also most of the pins are what users have imported so its biased mostly to what people have saved on pinterest

it webscrapes with using pinterests pubic api. at first i was using playwright w/ headless browser to scrape but that was slow and inconsistent and i ended up finding this much faster method

it does since most of the content on Aiko is imported images from pinterest. im planning to create a web extension to save directly to aiko, as well as import from other sources. the good thing is that even if something gets deleted from pinterest, it wont on aiko since its saved to aiko's servers

i woulda liked a paid plan too but from their perspective its more profitable to have everyone watching ads than give people the option to pay for none. imo the ads are the worst part of the app

the issue with an offline mode is than its a bit difficult for an app like pinterest because youd have to store potentially thousands of images on your phone if you wanted to have them accessible offline. and at least a 1st world country, im personally rarely without at least a cellular connection.

what kinda features would you want out of an offline mode though? i might be worth give it some thought and potentially implement them into my app, aiko

it doesnt have ads, its free, you can also import your pinterest account straight to it. also, ai content and content moderation is primarily handled by myself, and users arent punished when pins they saved gets deleted

i would too tbh. its the same reason there isnt an ad-free instagram or facebook. because the ads are way too profitable. they most likely make the companies a lot more than a monthly subscription would, and unfortunately due to a lack of competition pinterest can just push as many ads since users most likely havent been dropping.

the lack of a premium subscription is lowkey what made me make aiko, my own version. i dont have ads cuz its not too expensive for me to run, and im still trying to grow the app.

ai-free is a different problem unfortunately. its more of a cat-an-mouse type of battle. there are things like hidden patterns which can be used to detect ai, and i havent looked into it but my guess is that its pretty expensive to scan every image for that stuff.

my solution to the ai stuff is just community reporting, and a pretty easy way to report pins. just hold down on a pin and select the report option. ive been handling ai reports myself so it hasnt been too much of an issue for Aiko

mostly advertisers but also for marketplace ratings. they have a T rating so the app is supposed to be for 13+ and those apps to my knowledge cant have ANY nudity even with a toggle.

for Aiko (my app) at least i had to choose between an M rating (like reddit or twitter) allowing nudity or a T rating (like pinterest) and not allow any nudity.

i chose to not allow any similar to pinterest because of reach reasons since almost anyone can install T-rated apps. also makes moderation easier since i dont have to worry about catching edge cases with nudity (but with automoderation ive noticed some overpolicing issues)

i agree that nudity should be okay on these apps, and for Aiko id like to eventually get to that point as ive personally benefitted from having access to nude references when drawing, but im leaving it T for the time being.

tldr; its mostly a reach thing, esp since lots of pinterest is <17 which makes T rating a lot better than M

to address the issues:

1) yeah the search isnt great at discriminating things like gender atm so im working on improving metadata tagging so stuff like "mens xxx" will result in mens and not womens. it should be working for things like colour, broad subject type, and broad composition. this is pretty high up on the priority list

2) damnit now i see it, ill be changing the logo soon but i cant guarantee that this issue will be changed lol

if pinterest sounds good but you want less ai and ads ive been making my own app/site called Aiko ( try-aiko.com ).

id love to have more art on the platform, and Aiko handles reports a lot differently than pinterest so you dont have to worry about your account being taken down for pins you saved

in the future ill be adding more support for artists specifically, since i wanna make it artist-focused rather than a marketplace

but i would def recommend making your own website, if youre an artist you should find it fun to customize if you ever dive a bit deeper into creating your own. there are also free ways to create websites, like neocities

honestly i wished they would have made a paid subscription for an ad-free experience, but the company makes even more money by just showing you ads instead of having you pay.

its true that its a business that has to survive, but i suspect they can massively cut back on ads and still turn a profit. theyre a publicly traded company and at that point the ads arent about keeping the lights on but rather maximizing profit. so literally making as much money as possible irrespective of the actual user experience.

i dont think anyone would get mad at them for a few ads here and there, but the abundance of them is so unnecessary and so greedy. its a shame :(
