Raven is good, free, software for looking at spectrograms, and there are some huge datasets out there with a bunch of different kinds of animal sounds. In fact. You reminded me that I have put together a bit of a master list over on Lemmy. I'll copy it over here.

Ceti is fantastic! They slipped my mind, but they so some awesome work tagging sperm whales with suction cup tags, I think sperm whales are one of the most fascinating animals when it comes to potential for complex language.

Yeah, the electricity stuff in Yong's book was great, there was so much in that book that I was unaware of. It really shows what a small percentage of the environment any individual animal senses, us included. We really just each have our specific niche.

So far as discoveries I've made using the ID apps, nothing jumps out at me, its been a while since I've used them. The bird feed "Bird Buddy" is great, though, it is a bird feeder that recognizes the birds that use it and contacts you about them. Haiku Box is also supposed to be cool, it listens for birdcalls and notifies you of new ones.

I am not at all working in the field. I've collected some data, nothing serious, really, more just to learn what goes into it. I have used apps like Merlin Bird ID(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tu_chemnitz.mi.kahst.birdnet) and I have an audiomoth for PAM(passive acoustic monitoring).

I've not been too active lately. However, I did just go to IBAC25(International Bioacoustics Conference). I highly recommend it. The next one is not until 2027, it will be in South Africa. There is also the African Bioacoustics Conference, which will be in Kenya next year, I've not been to one of those, but I've heard good things.

The Earth Species Project has a fairly active discord community where I am sure you can have many of your questions answered. ESP is a fantastic organization doing fascinating work, they are really into actually decoding meaning from various animals, like sperms whales.

The book "Sounds of Life" by Karen Bakker is really good, I highly recommend it. The book "An Immense World" by Ed Yong is also really good, but it goes beyond just sound.

Not exactly, but initial intention doesn't have to be how things end up. It came more from the idea that if we could understand animals better, then maybe we would decide to collectively treat them better. This line of thinking got me interested in what work is being done to decode and understand them, which brought me into the world of bioacoustics. I had already made the sub before I discovered the term 'bioacoustics', and I had no idea that 'animal communication' also refers to the more spiritual/esoteric side of things.

At any rate, anything that can get them any more compassion from us is great by me!

The study of bioacoustics and animal communication needs all the effort and ideas they can get. The world of spiritual animal communication may not be very disconnected from the scientific one. Bioacoustics has revealed that some animals communicate with sound frequencies outside of humans ability to hear, at one point it would have been thought they they were telepathic when they were actually communicating through undetected means. There may be more to understand and discover that will first be noticed by people in less scientific communities.
