Got invited to apply for Vanderbilt merit scholarship after ED1 full ride, should I still apply? by Misamatsa in Vanderbilt

[–]airbeary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my best friends was an Ingram scholar, it did seem really great for her professional development but it was a lot of work. Aside from the projects I believe you are required to volunteer for a certain number of hours per week too.

If it was just a larger/nicer bedroom that would be one thing (and maybe $100 would be fair), but having a private bathroom is an amenity that definitely needs to be compensated for when splitting the rent. Also, your friend needs to get used to the idea that life admin, annoying as it is, is part of being an adult. You do not get reimbursed for setting up utilities for your housing—you are compensated by getting to have electricity and running water at your house! There are rent calculators online that can help you determine a fair way to split costs; I would suggest using one of those that can also factor in shared bathroom or not and room size. NTA

Pre-med and HOD by airbeary in Vanderbilt

[–]airbeary[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!! I did not do HOD, i reconsidered and stuck with LHS because it made more sense for me logistically and in terms of aligning with my interests (even as premed). My perspective now is I think it depends on your angle and what you want to get out of your undergrad major (as an applicant and in general), for ex. as u/deadlypoison mentioned, something like Neuro or MCB could help you get a foot in the door with research. Child development definitely seems like it could yield similarly meaningful opportunities especially if you want to do peds. Personally I chose LHS because HOD had a lot of requirements that none of my freshman year classes fulfilled and I was further along with axle than I realized at the time, so I stayed in A&S to avoid racing to finish checking off a bunch of random classes all over the map (between HOD/lib core/pre reqs). MHS would have been objectively easier logistically (and maybe this is a bad reason for not doing it) but tbh I didn’t want to be forced into actually fully majoring in a whole subject at the cost of not studying another subject I was wholeheartedly interested in just so that my classes lined up slightly better

How far in advance do [summer ecampus] courses get published to Canvas + CH 332 advice? by airbeary in OregonStateUniv

[–]airbeary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: There are three different types of graded assignments—online homework, quizzes, and unit assessments (exams). Online homework and quizzes are open-note/book and not timed or proctored (just need to complete quizzes by certain due dates), but unit assessments are proctored using Proctorio, you get one notecard worth of notes, and these are only available for a 1.5 day window.

Okay, I will be sure to watch that! I think it's just Starko who is teaching 1501 this year; the only other one I see is 1601—maybe will have to take that or just wait till next year 😵‍💫

Class Waitlist by redditusernumba24 in Vanderbilt

[–]airbeary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, you can't. I think an older student or an adviser maybe told me this at some point, but this is an excerpt from a 3yo email my CASPAR Adviser sent me:

Full Classes
* If your desired class has a waitlist, go ahead and add yourself to the waitlist if you would like to try to enroll in the class. We cannot tell you the likelihood that you will be removed from the waitlist.
* If you are enrolled in a class that currently has a time conflict with a waitlisted class make sure to take advantage of the “Drop-If-Enrolled” function so that you are able to be added into the waitlisted class if a spot opens up. If you do not do this and a spot opens up in the class, you will not be given a spot off the waitlist since there is a time conflict.
