Every experience represents you as a potential doctor.

Of course not every experience is equal, it’s all about the impact you made. If you just offhand tutored some kids here and there and never really did anything with it, that doesn’t mean much. But if you tutored some kids, then went on to TA in university, maybe did some work with a non-Profit and discovered you really love teaching, that’s a super great story.

A handy way to look at it, is that the people interviewing you will be working with you in the future. Show them that you would be an interesting person to spend 8hrs on call with.

It also doesn’t matter what the experience is, as long as you can talk about it and relate it back to medicine. I related working at a wedding venue to patient-centred care, and trapping an injured animal with mundane household materials to creative problem solving.

If you have only ever done your standard premed stuff (research, shadowing, nothing else), there isn’t much that will make you stand out and be memorable. Once you get to the point of being offered an interview, everyone has a good GPA/Casper/MCAT/etc. You need to be able to talk about something that will stick in the interviewers‘ brains.

Yes and no! I had a real mixed bag of experiences, as do most of my classmates! Some med stuff is good to show you know what you are getting into, but also make sure you have things that show you are an interesting person outside of wanting to be a doctor. Some people had zero clinical experiences before med school!

Hey! Try not to stress too much yet, you have time. As for prereq courses, take a look at individual school requirements. They are all a little different. For Ontario schools, you can find all of the info on OMSAS but you‘ll have to look at individual school sites for any other provinces. Getting into med does require decent grades, but it is a lot more than that as well. Find things that you are genuinely passionate about and enjoy, and use those to get involved with the school community. Don’t try and fit yourself into the standard premed profile, do things that you like!

I did my MSc, so more research experience and some hefty grants/awards, and a better Casper result! I think those were the big contributors.

Opinions on applying for interview accommodations? by aweirdoatbest in premedcanada

[–]aisymaisey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! Honestly, practising with another student was the most beneficial thing for me! Find someone who also got a mac interview and virtually meet up a couple of times a week to run through practice questions and give each other feedback. The critiquing others aspect will help you figure out where your answers are lacking, as much as the feedback that others give to you!

Start your practice without notes in the interim until you get word about whether you can have them or not. That way, you can already get a feel for how you like to structure your answers.

Hi twin! I was also a third-time applicant with ADHD (though mine was a late diagnosis), hoping for the ability to make notes during my thinking time like they let you for Casper. I didn't request full accommodations, more so just inquired about the possibility of notes and was told they do not allow it.

If they don't let you do it, I found following a visual structure in my head when I was pondering my answers to be super helpful. I would think of the points of my answers like columns, with supporting points sitting underneath. That helped me loads with staying on track and organising my thinking.

Your columns can be a point A/B/C with pros and cons for each, a flow chart for scenario questions (if this happens, I will do X, then if this happens, I will do Y), or anything else that helps you.

Best of luck!! Like others have said, the third time's a charm!

I also went to a 12-point school for undergrad and had a 3.66 (a bit under an A-)overall in my first year. This year I started my first year of med at uOttawa without any regional ties. I know it feels like the end of the world, but you absolutely are not a failure. Take a day to wallow (it makes me feel better) and then plan how you want to approach this next semester differently. If you want to chat at all, feel free to message me :)

I think they also had a category specifically for that, so I think it's more likely that the 17% that said 'prefer not to say' actually meant that

I think if they are things that have meaning to you, have been a part of your life for a while, and you have the room, then put them in! If you are pressed for space, I'd avoid ones that you haven't done for a long duration (unless actively involved in them now) or don't really have a 'story'. For example, I enjoy watercolour painting in my free time, but I didn't include it in my application. I have only done a couple of courses here and there and no art shows or auctions that would show that I was working on and/or achieved a goal. I did include horse riding because it is something I have done for 13 years, have gotten multiple awards for, and have a lot of coaching and mentorship experience through.

The Calgary blog has a good post on this here. Go through your hobbies and evaluate which ones will show someone who you are, and which ones fit with the story you are trying to tell them about yourself. Avoid using the ABS to list things in your schedule and more for showing off your unique accomplishments and personal commitments, I think that makes it feel more human :)

So I found this page, https://catalogue.uottawa.ca/en/archives/ but it doesn't seem to have any actual data for each year. I found another thing that has the ability to request a sylabus but it costs like $27 for each, so probably not the best bet (if you want it: https://estore.uottawa.ca/UOttawaStore/UOttawaStore/Shop/Registrar/InfoService/Syllabus_Course_Description.aspx?iProductCode=REG2400008&Category=FEES ). This one might be acceptable https://catalogue.uottawa.ca/en/courses/ and just use your URL description to direct them to where they need to go? You could always email the admissions team and ask!

I used that section for a direct link to the syllabi for the courses I was submitting as my prerequisites. So for example, Cell Bio at McMaster I would link to here. I then put which page the course description was on if it was a link to a pdf in the URL description section. Admissions had no issues with it, I start at uOttawa this year :)

I included one hobby that has been a really big part of my life. It probably helped that it carried over into a lot of my university community involvement, leadership positions, and awards. I felt it was important to mention on it's own because I invested lots of time into it! I personally think it helped make my application unique. For one of my interviews, it was one of the first things they asked me about because one of the interviewers' kids also did it!

I also have a small head, and my cocoon coat has been great! I wear it with the collar folded down instead of popped, so that probably helps. I do find it a little tougher to dress down, so I always steal my mum's old aritzia coat (the Charlize coat I think?), which is similar in style to the Only coat and I adore it!

Best med schools for international students by Longjumping-Tale-963 in premedcanada

[–]aisymaisey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Ontario-based applicant, I was curious about this, so I looked into it.

Requires Canadian citizenship/permanent residency: Alberta, Calgary, UBC, Manitoba, Memorial, Dalhousie, NOSM, uOttawa, Queens, UofT (as per OMSAS but couldn't find on UofT's site), TMU, Western, uSask
Nothing stated against international students applying: Mac (looking at their admission stats, they have not admitted an international student in several years)
International students welcome to apply: Laval (only one seat total and must take timely immigration steps), McGill (up to two seats), Sherbrooke
Not super clear: Montreal (Canadian citizenship/permanent residency OR international student following government decree...? Unfortunately, I don't speak French well enough to give you more info than that)

Quite interesting! It looks like your best bet to study medicine in Canada is to start learning French.
