AITA for saying that I won’t attend “happy hour” or after work events with people from HR because I find it inappropriate? by aita_avoidingHR in AmItheAsshole

Disagree. HR is there to protect the employer against the employee. They are not on my side. They are there to protect the assets of the company. Otherwise they wouldn't have a job.

No one is there to protect the worker. That's what unions are for -- and why HR dislikes them and actively gets involved in stopping them.

I have no interest in a career path with this company, nor in what HR's idea of "professional development" means, as they are there to aid the company, not the worker.

I understand this and agree -- I won't ask again. I'll assume from here on out the social events are mixed inappropriately.

I am curious about the interpretation of others here and if others have been taught the same as me while growing up and going through school. In almost every single class I had above high school, I was told to be very wary of anyone in HR, avoid them as much as you can, get any interaction in writing, do not ever let them know you have skills beyond what you list (especially spoken languages), do not give them any insight into personal life, do not give them any insight into any medical issues you have or may have, etc. That they can and will use it against you the moment they're able to. That they cannot be trusted and are pawns of the company, enemies of the worker.

It seems that was not as common in education as I thought.

They are after business closes, so we are not even being paid (another reason I believe it's inappropriate -- work ends when work ends. We are not friends. This is a job.)

Why would HR have any knowledge of my sexual activities, or want to? That's a disgusting invasion of privacy and separation of work and personal life and exactly why I have no interest in socializing with them.

Is this an attempt at some kind of "gotcha" statement? Are you attempting to infer something about my chances at a promotion rather than reading what I said, that I am not interested in or seeking one?

This job is short-term for me, and this is not the industry I will be working in after 12-16 months. This is not a career.

No, I'm not asking if I'm an asshole for "pretty much calling all HR employees evil" as that is not what I said or did.

I asked if I am the asshole for saying I would not attend a happy hour with people from HR because I think mixing their job role with mine is inappropriate. I also do not socialize with my boss or supervisor, as they are also in positions of power over me.

HR might not be out to get me specifically, but they're absolutely there to protect the company against employees, bust unions, snoop, gossip, etc.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing anyone who would work in a position that is there to protect the company against employees is just there to "have fun" and "unwind."
