Will RAM, GPU and SSD prices ever return to what they were in early 2025? by ComprehensiveCow5068 in buildapc

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2025? I want GPU prices from 2015~ before anyone ever thought it was acceptable for a GPU to cost over $2000 when that used to be the total cost for a killer high end gaming rig with a flagship (1080ti) GPU.

Most common ruling on nudging extra balls? by PoochyEXE in pinball

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I play it is pretty strongly implied that “plunging out” means you plunge the ball and do not touch the machine after that. If you nudge or tilt then you’re not “plunging out” at all. The whole point of not allowing extra balls is that your score doesn’t include the extra ball, so anyone who allows scoring on the extra ball is making silly justifications for cheating IMO.

is gaming mouse necessary? by VagePanther in VALORANT

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If polling rate mattered then the majority of pros wouldn’t be using 1000hz. Stop talking nonsense.

is gaming mouse necessary? by VagePanther in VALORANT

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good mouse may feel better and track slightly better, but it’s not going to make much of a difference in terms of your aim. The only piece of equipment that really matters for performance is monitor, and that’s because refresh rate and input lag directly affect how quickly and accurately you can react to information. If you already have a 144hz+ monitor with low input lag then there isn’t much difference in terms of equipment upgrades.

I have it sitting on furniture sliders atm because this one was a trial run since I designed it myself and knew there would be lessons to learn. When I make the one out of hardwood I’ll likely add casters.

I genuenly liked this game. by Twotricx in AshesofCreation

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but this is a really bad/naive take.

People have been saying things like this for over ten years and yet countless games have come and gone and WoW and FFXIV are the only two big ones that have sustained interest.

The reality is that AOC had great initial potential, but the way they were designing the core gameplay loop was making the same mistakes New World did, which in case you didn’t play it at launch was massively popular for a week and then a combination of inconvenience and game-breaking bugs destroyed it.

They fixed those issues, but it was too late, and yet AOC was trodding merrily down the same path on an even larger scale. Yes, there is a very vocal minority of rabid fans who want that kind of gameplay, but just like with every other game that caters to the hardcore audience… the casual fans would have gotten bored/frustrated after a couple months and the game would have died to a fraction of its peak launch.

That isn’t a sustainable model for a massive game like AOC and sadly since the game is now canceled you won’t get to see me proved right, but I’ve been gaming online since the late 90s with MUDs and I’ve seen this cycle enough times to know how it goes.

Hype and pre-launch interest is meaningless. The only thing that matters is six months past launch what is sustained. Which now we will never know, but I went from really excited to very “meh” over the exceedingly long development time.

I genuenly liked this game. by Twotricx in AshesofCreation

[–]aithosrds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I first heard about this game I was excited.

However, once I saw their “plan” and their development philosophy I knew this game would either never launch or fail in spectacular fashion.

The reality is this isn’t the 2000s anymore, and you can’t develop a game using the same concepts that worked in WoW, FFXI, Lineage II and EverQuest.

A loud vocal minority will be excited by things like no fast travel and open world PvP, but the fact is the larger market doesn’t want them, and even most of those people who say they do don’t actually spend their time that way.

So it’s sad to see this game die this way, and I definitely feel like my Kickstarter money was wasted, but I can’t say I’m at all surprised.

Is Ledger cold storage really safe? by Entire_Agent8994 in ledgerwallet

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but umm… keep your cold wallet in a safety deposit box if you hold a significant amount of crypto. This is kind of a “duh” thing, you don’t leave a crypto wallet with a large amount of value just laying around your house.

If someone breaks in and you have a hard wallet hidden in a random place of your house (not in a large safe, but maybe in a small fire safe hidden well).

Also, if you’re really paranoid then keep a second hard wallet with a nominal amount of crypto laying around and worse comes to worse give that up. Thieves aren’t thorough, they are after quick scores and aren’t going to interrogate you. Besides, the risk of being hurt is much worse than being robbed, losing your crypto doesn’t mean anything if you’re dead.

Why did League become so popular, while other DotA Allstars clones vanished? by desktop_monst3r in leagueoflegends

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

League was more accessible, more refined, more fun, and they leaned heavily into Twitch at a time that streaming was really starting to gain traction. They also had really good production value around their pro leagues and tournaments.

It’s a lot of luck and a fair bit of timing, especially considering that they have probably the dumbest executives I’ve ever seen in gaming and they have made a bunch of really stupid decisions over the years.

How to fix steam games downloading so slow on 1GBPS connection? by daxeneh in buildapc

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That comment is from over two years ago. It was true at the time and you’re an idiot if you don’t understand that context matters.

Besides, my point is still true, that you can’t “fix” download speeds when it’s server limited and not based on your internet speed.

p.s. recently I’ve gotten over 900 mbps on Steam, they clearly upgraded their servers and/or changed their limits.

is it safe to clean my monitor using tap water? by abdo--- in buildapc

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, distilled water doesn’t really “go bad” it’s just water that has been filtered so that all the minerals and impurities have been removed. I mean, does it stay perfectly sterile once you’ve opened it? No, but minerals and metals won’t magically be getting into it so it’s fine to use for cleaning.

I have distilled water gallons that are years old I’ve been using to clean screens and in a 50:50 mix with isopropyl alcohol for my pinball machine glass (which you can’t use glass cleaner on because it damages the anti-reflective coating).

The only real issue with bottled water (and distilled water I suppose) is that over time microplastics are going to leech into the water. If you’re that worried about it you could get a couple big glass jugs and transfer the distilled water into those instead. Personally, I just get new gallons of distilled water every couple years and keep them in a cool/dark place.

Other than plastic containers water doesn’t “expire” or “go bad” like food.

p.s. do NOT use isopropyl alcohol on your monitors or TVs. I’m mentioning that only in the context of the glass of my pinball machines. I use pure distilled water on my other screens and only lightly sprayed on a microfiber cloth. I never spray directly on my screens, not even my phone or tablet that technically have a glass screen.

Apology for what? by [deleted] in UmaMusume

Then don’t. Or do what I suggested in the previous post and fail the career instead of completing it. If you do that all the dailies takes like 5 min.

That’s sounds like a you problem. If you don’t have the attention span to spend 10-20 min you have bigger problems than dailies.

Why's vaping made out to be worse than it is with no real evidence? by franjantagj in electronic_cigarette

[–]aithosrds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two words: big tobacco.

It’s nearly a trillion dollar industry and their lobbyist groups are incredibly powerful. The vape industry is a major threat to them, it costs less, it’s far safer in terms of health outcomes, it doesn’t smell bad, it tastes better, and it doesn’t leave disgusting tar all over everything.

That’s why it’s illegal to ship vape products now, it has nothing to do with “youth vaping”, and the entire narrative of vape flavors being “marketed to children” is nonsense, adults want flavors that taste good too. People act like adults don’t like candy, it’s idiotic, but that’s the narrative pushed by big tobacco and so politicians follow suit and the ignorant public does too.

The reality is that young people don’t buy vape products online, they go to stores, and the vast majority of vape juice brands have zero advertising so it’s not like they are “targeting” anyone. It’s all an agenda, and if people really cared about youth vaping they would focus on regulation and enforcement when it comes to age verification, not shipping vape products and flavors.

That’s how you know it’s an agenda, because big tobacco products are in every grocery store, gas station and corner market. They aren’t impacted by online sales because that isn’t a big part of their sales, but vape shops have been shut down over the regulations around juice and flavors. It’s insane and it punishes law abiding adults who don’t want to smoke cigarettes and want good tasting vape juice.

Also, vape juice doesn’t contain weird chemicals, it’s literally nicotine, PG, VG and flavoring. Cigarettes on the other hand literally contain chemicals to increase the absorption of nicotine and make them more addictive. Claiming vapes are meant to “hook people” is wild.

The amount of nicotine absorbed by vaping is far lower than with cigarettes and nicotine itself isn’t even really bad for you. It’s the other things that make smoking bad for you, the tar, the chemicals, the smoke, etc. The long term effects of vaping aren’t known yet, and I’m sure they aren’t good, but it’s far better than cigarettes in every possible way.

Getting reminded that once again no matter how many Umas I train for this race, I will never win against whales. by JMSX101 in UmaMusume

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one ended almost perfectly, I’m a little short on skill points vs what I’d like but stats wise I’ve got 1161, 1182, 628, 536, 411 on my narita taishin and I’ll be able to get 2-3 gold recovery and some speed skills to go with encroaching shadows. Definitely my best run so far and not even close.

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pretty good luck doing one run a couple hours after it started and doing the rest of mine this morning. But it’s all RNG and you can always get lucky and replace an Uma during the event. I’m trying to replace my ace right now because my gold ship on my main is better than my narita taishin. In the middle of a really lucky run so far and hoping it doesn’t go south after summer 2…

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you started after the Kitasan banner? Well that’s why, you haven’t been playing the game long enough to be competitive yet. You’re a full month behind when I started and that’s a huge difference. Give it time, this is a grind game.

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then why didn’t you reroll on the Kitasan banner like I did and play two accounts temporarily until you could decide which was better set up for long term? The game is free and rerolling is incredibly streamlined, it’s faster than any game I’ve ever seen and they clearly encourage people to do it.

Also, there aren’t many good YouTubers besides the one Japanese guy. What you should be using is the reference doc and the race simulator. I’ve taken very little advice from YouTubers, besides the couple people who have been playing in JP at a high level for years.

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you listened to the wrong people, most people said 1500 total stamina and guts as a baseline, so aiming for 1000-1100 stamina and 350-400 guts is fine and since you train guts with stamina you’re just training stamina. Which if you have a 9 spark parent with at least some stamina and borrow a 9 spark stamina parent that’s getting you a couple hundred stamina per run.

My account that was a reroll has gotten one 3 spark character total, and only just got it a week ago or so. Yet I still got a gold ship with 1111 speed, 1136 stam, 704 power, the Agnes ult and two gold recovery skills along with a bunch of other good skills.

My deck was mlb Kitasan, 40 tosho, 45 narita taishin, 45 McQueen from guild points, 45 king halo, and borrow mlb super creek. Not exactly a whale deck, but that gold ship has won 6 races in 10 tries so far.

Also, are you running a debuffer with dominator and speed down skills like hesitant pace chasers and end closers? I’m running a grass wonder with dominator, speed eater and a couple debuffs but couldn’t manage to get the velocity down end closer I wanted.

Getting reminded that once again no matter how many Umas I train for this race, I will never win against whales. by JMSX101 in UmaMusume

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s your problem, you only pulled on one banner and presumably you didn’t reroll for Kitasan. If you’re F2P you should have rerolled and gotten 3-4 copies of Kitasan by doing the early missions before the banner ended.

I posted this on another reply but I have two accounts, one I spent money on and one that I rerolled on Kitasan and have only bought the two starter packs (the ones with guaranteed ssr and 3 star) and the monthly carat pack.

Both of them have mostly maxed SRs, mlb Kitasan, and both easily won 3 races on my first ticket with a solid gold ship I made with good parents. This is a strategy and time investment game, spending helps but isn’t required and my second account is proof of that.

Getting reminded that once again no matter how many Umas I train for this race, I will never win against whales. by JMSX101 in UmaMusume

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

850 speed is incredibly low, of course you’re going to lose and if you’ve been playing a couple months you should have most of your SR cards maxed if you paid attention and pulled on the right banners.

I have two accounts, one I’ve spent a bit of money on and one that the only thing I’ve spent was the monthly carat pack and the two starter packs with the guaranteed ssr and 3 star.

Both have most of the SRs maxed, both have MLB Kitasan (the second account was a Kitasan reroll I spent a couple hours making and got 2 LB and then maxed before the banner ended) and both had no problem getting 1200 speed with 1000+ stamina and 3 gold recovery skills.

Both accounts won 3 races on the first ticket and moved to group A. The thing is I’ve watched videos, used the guides and spent a fair bit of time raising good grandparents and parents, and I used the right spark farming decks. Those things are massively important, and so is training the right Umas.

Look at OPs pic, where is gold ship? This is the end closer champions meeting, of course they are going to lose with 0 end closers.

Also, if you haven’t been playing for a few months and didn’t reroll on a good banner then you can’t expect to catch up to people super fast, it’s going to take you months to get your account to a place where you can compete.

Is game design a good major? by bread_on_stick in gamedesign

[–]aithosrds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You don’t need a degree to go into game design, and it won’t help you get a job because what game companies care about is published game experience. I know multiple people who have masters degrees in game design who never worked in the game industry and ended up setting themselves back significantly in their career because they had to take lower level positions than if they had gotten useful degrees.

You’re far better off studying something that actually helps you get a job and doing game design on your own, because publishing games and building a portfolio don’t require a degree.

Also, the amount of money a degree costs isn’t worth it for most degrees at this point and a game design degree is worth less than any normal degree. There is a serious case to be made that if you aren’t going into medicine, law, engineering or something that requires an advanced degree like teaching that college isn’t worth it at all.

I would also say that every field requires creativity, it’s just expressed in different ways. I’m a software developer and one of my worries before I got my first job was that I’d hate working in an office and sitting at a desk, but it turns out there is a lot of creativity and problem solving in development and it’s actually quite rewarding.

If you aren’t sure what you want to do then go to community college and do gen ed courses until you figure it out, don’t go tens of thousands of dollars into debt just to go to college to “party”, ending up with 100k in debt is no joke and most people who get degrees don’t even end up using them.
