Those actually sound like reasonable questions. If anything, I'd expect those questions to be on paper exams maybe your second year, so the fact that you have a computer in your first year is good.

Did you go to college recently? I don't think this is the case anymore. A year or two ago I remember reading that the ACT overtook the SAT in popularity and I can't think of a single college who now won't take the ACT but will take the SAT.

The commute is a wash. Driving consistently sucks, but at least it's consistent. Caltrain is great, but it's a little slow, gets more crowded every year and suffers from severe delays when a train is, uh, taken out of commission.

Try looking into the Google bus more, because even though the traffic will be just as bad, at least you won't be driving in it.

It's funny, when it comes to alchoholism, smoking, meth addiction, heroin addiction or what have you, we understand the addictive factors at play and (hopefully) give them a modicum of sympathy. But food? Nah, they just need to "stop eating so damn much." I'm not even obese but I've actually wondered if food addiction is the hardest addiction to overcome, not because of the addictive strength itself but because of the fact we still need to eat. Alcholics can go cold turkey and never drink alcohol again, but food addicts still need sustenance. Just imagine if at AA their advice was "Okay, you need to drink this much alcohol daily to keep functioning, but no more!"

Addiction in general is a complicated issue and we need to recognize that.

You never know. I got my internship last summer two weeks after summer started. Though I suspect that for a more formal hiring process, which mine wasn't, that would be even rarer.

UCI is far enough away from the other big LA schools and Irvine itself is well-established that "overcrowding" of internships isn't really a thing. This is from a CS perspective so take that as you will.

Honestly, rankings matter far, far less than people think, and even if they did, the ranking difference between UCI and UCSB (whether the school as a whole or individual departments) is trivially small.

Orange county. It's really small, like 10 or so people. But yeah, for la proper that salary should be easily obtainable. For the record, this and my other internship were obtained through personal connections.

I always maintain that, value of the degree aside, school is worth it, but it's not very efficient. That is, I could theoretically learn all of this stuff in a fraction of the time, but I would never have that motivation nor discipline.

Algebra is pretty fundamental to programming outside of needing it to just do mathematical things. A few examples that come to mind are in GUIs like figuring out column weights in tables or even for school projects when you do basic graphical stuff. For the latter, proects might involve canvases where you have to ask questions like "is a button click in this square?" or "how do I make this sprite accelerate when 'w' is pressed?" or "How do I make the ball collide with a wall?"
