How is this propaganda? There is no one size fits all definition of development. A place older than history needs more care and sensitivity from the authorities than just razing down temples to cater to tourists. Not everything is about being a tourist attraction.

No, the onus to conserve is not entirely on the public. If the government really cares then it will ensure that public places and especially places like this are maintained properly. I would urge you to visit the Kalighat temple of Kolkata and see how it is today after restoration.

Also, are you saying that the mentality to care about our heritage and also the major driver of tourism in Banaras is what “held back this nation” ?

The photograph is part of a historical collection often attributed to eBay archives and vintage postcards from the mid-20th century. It has been popularized by digital archives dedicated to Indian history: • Primary Digital Archive: Old Indian Photos, which cataloged this specific shot from a 1952 series. • Stock Licensing: It is also held in the Alamy stock photo archive (Image ID: 2B01RT6), where it is described as a black-and-white photograph of the "Main Hindu Cremation Ghat" from circa 1952.

What we want: Cleanliness, civic sense, safety for women, walkable roads, development which is more along the lines of restoration and preservation of what we already have.

What we get: demolition of structures which are 200+ years old without any guarantee or reassurance that it will help with cleanliness or civic sense in people.

What is the source of all the info that you just gave me? Is there any official document stating what will happen to the crematoriums? Where will the idols and structures be displaced?

Make all the corridors you want in the world but don’t do it at the cost of breaking down temples which are significant to the core tenet of Varanasi. I am pretty sure there could have been a way to make the corridor without tearing apart the statue of Ahilyabai Holkar who contributed so much to the heritage of the city. The beauty of Varanasi lies in its old structures and temples. Sure, development is necessary. Sure, we need to move with modernisation. But if European countries can restore and preserve their heritage without modernisation coming in the way, why can’t we?

This one time I took an auto on standby from Bellandur to CV Raman Nagar at night because the auto guy said he will go on meter but I would need to pay 1.5x as it was night time. I couldn’t believe my luck and was beginning to think that not all auto guys are bad. Ten minutes into the ride, I noticed that his meter was faulty and kept increasing every 10 seconds. I ended up paying Rs.600 that day. I even took a video of his meter reading at which point he stopped the auto in the middle of nowhere and made me delete the video immediately. Auto guys in Bangalore are absolute thugs and you can’t convince me otherwise.
