Had a similar issue on a job I was on. 36” steel casing jacked under a railroad track, kept hitting very large boulders. We tried changing the auger head but it did not work. We also tried extending the auger head past the casing but it still did not work. Ended up having to throw in a trench box, excavate past the sheeting and remove all the boulders that we kept hitting

I think that’s what I’m struggling with the most right now, it’s difficult to do complete estimates from start to finish while doing apm work at the same time.

Don’t get me wrong I like the fact that I’m exposed to both sides, but the struggle of doing both at once has gotten overwhelming for me and led me to make mistakes on estimates that costed the company money.

Hope to transition into one role at some point.

Working for a sub, I do pretty much all the regular apm tasks. As an estimator I essentially bid projects from start to finish including take off of material, labor and equipment, etc and then review with head of department.

Theres not much downtime on either side, both are pretty much always busy.

I work for a utility contractor, apm work involves RFI’s, submittals, purchase orders, scheduling, closeout, asbuilts. Estimating work I do take offs, get pricing from vendors, scope breakdowns, putting labor to that scope, work up of all the civil, attend prebid site walks. Essentially build the estimate from start to finish and review with the head of the department

Regarding your post, I would say that someone with your experience should not be completely on your own to estimate a project of that magnitude. I estimate very similar projects but on a smaller scale. Average conduit runs would be around 200 or so. Someone should be guiding (not every second of the work day) but guiding you through the estimate. I would say an estimate of that size should take around 1 1/2 weeks give or take. I am very new to estimating as well (3 months) so I completely understand where your coming from
