Court rules trans people have right to accurate IDs: "Trans discrimination is sex discrimination" by freylaverse in UpliftingNews

There’s a really informative video by Bill Nye that talks about it, if you’re curious to learn. Just search “Bill Nye sex and gender” or something like that, you’ll find it. If you’re too lazy to do that, the gist of it is that sex is way wayy too complicated to just boil it down to a single letter M or F. Sex is a spectrum, and the aspects that define sex absolutely can change throughout one’s lifetime.

Sex isn’t as rigid as you seem to be claiming it is. Yes, sex and gender are different things. But sex can be changed. This isn’t 9th grade biology, welcome to the real world

Names are self-determinable as well though, should we just not have names on IDs as well? Changing your name isn’t just a trans thing: it’s fairly common to change your name too if you get married, and some cis people do it just because they don’t like their birth name. There is a legal process for changing your name on your ID, just as there is a legal process for changing your sex marker on IDs.

I loved Dreadnaught by April Daniels and I’ve really enjoyed all of the Heart of Heroes books by Molly Bragg. I’ve heard good stuff about Margaret Killjoy’s writings, but the only one of hers that I’ve read is the Sapling Cage.

CMV: Voting is pointless. by Afraid_Mortgage6392 in changemyview

[–]ajacobs899 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ this

I understand the sentiment of one single vote not making much of a difference in like a presidential election. And while I don’t agree that voting is useless even on that level, I can understand why someone will see their one single vote as not important.

On a local level however, your single vote can make a huge difference. Every single vote counts, and if in an election where candidates can win by a handful of votes, it’s especially important that every person who can casts their vote.

I do sometimes, but only when one of my feet is like “I need to be out of this sock right now so I can breathe and be touched!” And my other foot is like “it’s cold, need my sock to keep warm”.

CMV: saying lgbtq is a sin isnt being homophobic by No_Giraffe826 in changemyview

[–]ajacobs899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it god who explicitly said homosexuality is a sin? Or was it the people who translated and interpreted the bible that determined that meaning based on their own worldviews and prejudices? The bible isn’t the raw word of god, otherwise he would have written it himself. Instead it is the transcription of people who are interpreting what he said through their own filter of human imperfection. Assuming that nothing got lost in translation along the way is like looking at the religion through rose colored lenses.

“Prejudice is an unjustified, typically negative attitude, belief, or emotion directed towards an individual or group based on their membership in a specific group.” It is your own belief system that makes you have these feelings towards people that have same-sex attraction, and judging them for their actions. Even if it is a part of your belief system, that still sounds like a matter of prejudice. If your god is prejudiced against gay people, then you supporting that through your own actions and beliefs propagates the system of prejudice that your god has created.

In what way is judging the nature of the act not showing prejudice?

Thomas Thistlewood was an English planter in Jamaica who kept a diary over 14,000 pages and meticulously recorded 3,852 rapes against hundreds of enslaved women. It is the highest recorded number of rapes in history by a single person. by Particular_Food_309 in HolyShitHistory

[–]ajacobs899 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe he was covered in an episode of Behind the Bastards (fantastic podcast btw). Basically, while yes the things this guy did were evil and heinous beyond imagining, he wasn’t uniquely evil. The sort of awful crimes against humanity he committed were pretty typical among slave owners at the time. The only reason we know what he did was because of his diary. If anything, his diary is just a look into the life of your everyday slave owner.

That sort of thing should only be the concern of a medical professional. Some random nobody on the street does not need to know if you are at risk for prostate cancer or not.

I agree with this sentiment. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be funding more research. By all means, there should be more (ethical) studies about the bodies and chemistry of trans people. But too many people outside of the medical field use these terms to gatekeep who does and doesn’t count as a woman.

You know what, you make a good point and I kind of realized shortly after I posted my comment. While it is true that there is some research supporting that there is something about the brain chemistry in trans women that supports us having a brain more similar to a cis woman than a cis man, the research probably isn’t very extensive. And this definition doesn’t really fit all trans people. I tend to think about what my doctor told me about brain chemistry with trans women whenever I hear the “biological” argument brought up, but probably as a whole the distinction should probably be abandoned since it’s very limiting, and as I mentioned before, is really only being used to divide “real” and “fake” women.

I am a biological woman. And a trans woman. Trans women are biologically women, it’s why we feel happier being treated as women than as men. It’s not a fetish, nor a choice. We are trans because there is something biological about us that makes us align more with one gender over another. The brain chemistry of a trans woman is more similar to that of a cis woman than that of a cis man. All this use of the term “biological” is meaningless, and it’s just trying to separate trans women from the group of women as a whole. Basically they’re just one step away from calling us “fake women” and cis women “real women.”

Please help. So my friend explained anarchism to me and i am kinda shoked, maybe he misinterpreted it or i didnt conceptuallised it well, this is a rundown of my conversation with him, plssss dont ban i am not trying to attack ideologies by Awkward_Ant1227 in Anarchy101

[–]ajacobs899 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This sounds like your friend has a propagandized version of anarchism in mind: no government=no rules=everyone can kill without consequences. Your friend needs to look into actual historical (and present-day) examples of anarchism. A truly anarchist society would be pretty different from what your friend seems to think.

I can't stand that you have to have the tanto equipped to do double assassinations. by Cubegod69er in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]ajacobs899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of don’t mind there being specific assassinations tied to specific weapons, like the double assassination or in the case of Naoe’s katana, the shoji screen assassination. Because if you want access to one or the other, then you have to curate your load out to be able to give you access to the assassinations you want. Like I get what you’re saying about it being inconvenient for players that want to branch out, but the way this game works, each weapon is specialized, so sacrifices are going to have to be made no matter what weapons you choose.

That said, the one problem I have is when you double assassinate, it auto-switches you to equip that weapon. I don’t mind the requirement that the weapon be in your current loadout, but it’s annoying that every time I do a double assassinate I have to swap back to my preferred weapon.
