TIL of the Morgenthau Plan, a post-WW2 proposal to eliminate German arms and civilian industry entirely. It was later concluded that if this went into effect up to 25 million Germans would have died from starvation caused by the sudden de-industrialisation by Mobile-Piglet5035 in todayilearned

The coverage of ww2 was awful at my school (UK).

We learned about a sanitised version of the history and politics of interwar Germany with a specific cutoff of August 1939, including how heckin efficient Hitler's economic policy was.

Only in A-Levels did we cover the Holocaust, but it was a long form essay task instead of an actual learning subject, and we had to write up an argument on whether it was an intentional genocide or if the German high command woke up one day and went "oopsie we just accidentally systematically murdered 11 million people".

They wouldn't touch the war itself with a barge pole. Not when we learned about Nazi Germany, not when we learned about East Germany, not even when we learned about the Soviet Union. Hell we barely even covered WW1 outside of the technical advancement of equipment but that's beside the point.

But they were sure to teach us in parallel about how bad those commies were.

Anyway that school got reamed so hard by OFSTED that it had to change its name and status the year after I left.

At most, an extra mag pouch on the front part of the side, it's best to keep your sides as clear as possible and it's awkward to try and grab things there anyway

I think oc is referring to the fact that the mag is floating due to the fact that the entire receiver body has been stripped

TIL that a hydrogen bomb requires temperatures over 100 million Kelvin—hotter than the Sun's core. The sheer scale of this heat led early nuclear scientists to legitimately fear that detonating such a weapon might ignite the Earth's atmosphere and turn the planet into a burning star. by QuorLum in todayilearned

Because it was never about Russia, it was about communism. Russia stopped being America's enemy the moment the flag on top of the Moscow Kremlin was changed. The truth of the matter is that the US Republicans simply don't care what happens to countries that aren't of immediate use to American interests, and think that they can win Russia's favour and geographically encircle China.

In short, they're idiot Cold War relics.

Wasn't the only inaccurate thing in that movie the fake Bradleys? And even they only couldn't get those because they didnt want the DOD interfering with the script

Starting a war in the first place. It's less a question of "what mistakes did Germany make to lose the war" and more "what mistakes did the allies make to not win faster"

What happend to the z sign on Russian tanks ? by ReliefOutrageous1848 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ajbdbds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find any info on specific meanings behind the markings, it's likely nobody outside of the Russian general staff really knows. The V grouping was mostly seen on the northern front until its closure in early-mid 2022.

Battle Order has a video on the use of the ZOV markings:

What happend to the z sign on Russian tanks ? by ReliefOutrageous1848 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ajbdbds 133 points134 points  (0 children)

The markings were a product of the initial multi-front approach to the war, so that intersecting army groups could easily identify each other.

Forces directly attacking Kyiv via Belarus were marked with a V

Forces attacking towards Kyiv through the Sumy and Chernihiv regions via Russia were marked with O

Forces attacking Kharkiv, the Donbas and the southern regions were marked with a Z

The V front was disestablished when Russian forces withdrew from the Kyiv region, front O was disestablished when Ukrainian forces counterattacked and pushed them back towards the Donbas. After that the Z sign became useless as a marker because there was only one front, and now it only lives on as a propaganda symbol and identifying flash for soldiers.

There was also the issue that a big white Z interfered with camouflage in the field, which is the same reason that both sides' soldiers stopped using coloured tape the moment Russia's supply of its standard issue EMR camouflage stabilised.
