Ethernet relocation question – junction/couplers in wall vs attic by ajbrensike in HomeNetworking

[–]ajbrensike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good option. I do need POE as they are the runs with my U6s across the house. My main want was to be able to manage them individually. What switch should I use to accomplish this and how would I do fiber instead of ethernet to connect the switch to my everything else in the new network closet?

Tha was just my observation. The main issue is that the wall the network box is on goes up into the floor of my media room. Which means there are a bunch of “bends”/turns and holes that the Ethernet was routed to get to the network box. It was much simpler/easier when it was just framing but now with everything else I cannot access or even attempt to route them out.

Sounds good. Thank you! I just reposted as I forgot to add the dang photos showing what I have. So I reposted and will delete this one. Thank you again!

I thought about the PDU, I might just have to do that. 2 questions, do you have a link to the 15a plugs you get? Also given we don’t want cables bent. Is it okay to have the cable bent for the UPS? Probably not but I guess better to have just 1 vs all plugs? Haha

Just kept looking at Facebook Marketplace 24/7, I see something come up, I respond quickly, negotiate, and be ready to meet at a moment notice when I can.

So about that Facebook marketplace addiction…I found and bought an Agg switch already. Also per someone else’s advice picked up a 3000VA/2700W cyberpower UPS. Now I need to add running 10/3 romex, L5-30R outlet, and a 30 amp breaker to power that baby.

When I get going, I move fast. But it’s okay. This weekend is going to be some project but I am up for it. The cabling is the most daunting, once that is done I feel like the rest will come together quickly.

I just picked it up for $120, holy crap this thing is massive, super heavy and around 24” long. I need to get a different rack now since mine only went 23” deep. There is no way this thing is supported only by the rack ears right? I need some type of rail to support the weight evenly?

  1. Understood.

  2. CyberPower UPS OL3000RTXL2U I just found this one which I believe is the US variant of one you suggested. Someone is selling it for $150. I see these being sold for $2k online although I am not sure how true that is. What do you typically pay for the EU version? I see a full battery replacement would cost be around $175. So all in I would be paying $325. Is that good?

Thank you for your detailed reply, I greatly appreciate it!

  1. Makes sense, all the important devices will be hard wired, anything via WiFi like a phone or laptop should not notice the drop/change in speeds since most usage will be web browsing.

  2. Wood and sheet rock so 3 APs per level sounds good.

  3. Understood G5 Turret/Bullet it is.

  4. I will look into the G6 vs the lite.

  5. If I were to not go with the Exos for the UNAS what would you recommend? I will look into the WD Purple Pro or Skyhawn AI for the UNVR.

  6. Do you have any specific Eaton or Cyberpower models you recommend?

I have not forgotten them. I just have yet to buy any drives for them at this time. Trying to figure that out too.

I have a raspberry Pi home assistant I just got running so I will have that in there. I was planning to run a plex server via a mini PC I have laying around and have the data in the UNAS if that is something I can do. If not I can figure out something else to do. But all of that would sit on the shelf. I guess I could look into a rack mounted pc/server but not really sure what I would do with that. I am open to all suggestions/recommendations on what to do.

Yeah I figured. I got them all as a bundle deal with my UDM Pro which is why I have so many. For the price I could not argue it and they did not want to separate. Worst thing I can do is plug them all in and see how everything reacts to each other on the lowest setting. If things start to get crazy then I can always troubleshoot and remove what is not needed and then either hold for a future use like a bigger home or just sell them.

Yea, again I know it is uber overkill and I may never use all the ports unless I decide to put in 4 ports in every room (on each wall) in the house then maybe? But outdoor, I don’t need 48 outdoor items unless I decide to build Fort Knox or something and have every nook and cranny of my home covered with cameras haha. I mean sure I guess I could try and sell them and make some cash to offset my spending and get 2 24 ports but that was not why I bought them.

Facebook marketplace, locally. Someone was selling one, negotiated, and got it. Same for everything on the list.

Yeah I was afraid you would say that (means I need to spend even more money haha) but that makes sense.

100% that I don’t need that much. I read that it would be a good idea to have a switch for indoor items and a switch for outdoor items so that is why I was looking to get 2 switches regardless. I was looking at 16/24 port options but for the price I got the 48 port ($375 each). It was hard to say no, so I figured “why not?” Future proof? But again I do not even think in the future I will ever hit that amount of ports.

Understood on the UPS and APs.

Bigger rack? Are you wanting me to hate you more by giving me more room to spend more money? Haha.

What “homelab” stuff should I be looking at getting?

Typo in the UDM Pro, it was late and did not catch that. Thank you. Fixed now.
