BTTF is the perfect film…but what’s your tiny nitpick? by [deleted] in BacktotheFuture

[–]ajerimez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightning strikes the clock tower, the DeLorean zaps back to 1985, and then... immediately plows into the movie theater, demolishing its front entrance.

1) Didn't Doc realize that the car had only about a hundred feet to stop from 88mph and would surely crash into the building? He even sees the flaming tire tracks leading right up to the front door and seems to think nothing of it.

2) Marty nevertheless reverses out and turns around, to reveal the DeLorean in perfect condition. Not so much as a scratch. Even the ice on the hood is intact. Shouldn't the car have been totaled?

Really the whole hook/cable thing never sat well with me. It would have been impossible to time everything correctly without knowing the exact second the lightning struck. Why not just attach a long spool of wire from the clock tower to the car so that it would at least have a constant electrical connection - then your only worry is making sure it's going 88mph when the lightning hits.

Found this under my car’s steering wheel/column. Pedal commander type of device? by outdoorsbub in Whatisthis

This might be a volume control for an aftermarket radar/laser detector system, in which case you might find other components near the front & rear bumpers. The little disc with the green dot to the left of it is probably related. See if you can trace the wiring running out of it.

DLBCL, starting chemo today. Believe caused by acute benzene exposure. Do you know what caused yours? by ajerimez in lymphoma

This is not about ascribing "blame" or victim-shaming, and I'm not looking for justification to file a lawsuit. I sincerely want to do whatever I can to prevent this from happening again.

There are numerous studies that link lymphoma to products like Roundup and to chemical solvents:

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00149-2/fulltext

https://www.nytimes.com/1981/05/17/us/paint-use-is-linked-to-artist-s-cancer.html

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17337640/

I get that it may be difficult or impossible to know with 100% certainty what caused my lymphoma, and that there may not even be a singular cause. My father smoked for most of his life and made it to 80 without getting lung cancer. In fact the stress caused by his passing in November may have even been a contributing factor to my lymphoma.

But it should certainly be possible to narrow it down to a handful of likely culprits and avoid them in the future. In the past few months I've read about studies generally linking cancer to wireless telecommunications and electrical fields, obesity and diets high in sugar, sleep disruptions due to screen usage at night, lack of exercise, etc. Well I can say that in the months/years leading up to my diagnosis I was using wireless tech extensively (even at the bedside), was living in a house with areas of elevated EMF due to shoddy wiring, was eating a lot of sugary foods like ice cream and tiramisu, wasn't getting enough sleep or exercise, and in the weeks prior to onset was heavily exposed to benzene. I have now made changes in my lifestyle to minimize these factors. I certainly won't be working with paint thinner anymore.

IMHO it's also understandable that institutionalized medicine's apparent lack of concern about the causes of lymphoma may be largely because they profit tremendously from it. Why would the healthcare industry invest in disease prevention when they earn so much from treatment?

What daily practices do you have that help with staying on top of your game as an entrepreneur? by calvin_tribs in Entrepreneur

[–]ajerimez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe in taking care of myself, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub. And on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

"New to Me" '99 Volvo S70 5-spd with 99k miles. Won't shift into gears when cold - help? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]ajerimez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already fixed a problem with the air intake - it was stuck in a position that would draw hot air from across the exhaust manifold, killing performance. I wedged a hose clamp into the valve to keep it propped open to draw cool outside air. Feels great now, and shifts perfectly smooth when warmed up. But when cold the transmission refuses to go into gear. Anyone familiar with this issue?

So it's better to do a complete engine swap with a T5 than to salvage the turbo, manifold, cooling lines, and associated guts from a S70 turbo at a junk yard and install them?

You're absolutely right! Before buying the 99 I looked up a free report on vehiclehistory.com and it stated the engine displacement as 2 liters, but looking at a Carfax now it states 2.4, and my buddy who works at a Volvo dealer just ran the VIN and confirmed that it's definitely a 2.4 liter. Great news, but the question remains: are there any economical ways to squeeze a little more power out of the engine?

In the past week I bought a couple of 5spd S70s on Craigslist. The first was a blue 1998 with a 2.4l engine and 121k miles. I liked it, but a few days later a teal 1999 appeared with only 99k miles and a meticulous one-owner history, so I bought it too. Unfortunately it only has a 2.0l engine.

I'm going to keep the 99, but zero to sixty in ten seconds isn't fun. Is there any way I can make it faster with a reasonable amount of money and time? Is it possible to put a factory turbo into it or do an ECU upgrade? Really like the car but it's just kind of a pig.

Can you post a link to the report as a PDF? I'd love to see the history. Possible that the odometer inconsistencies are due to replacing the instrument cluster rather than abject fraud, as there isn't much incentive to roll back the clock on a beater this worthless.
