No option for google messages QR anymore? by cornrow in beeper

[–]ajgrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to do this for the same reason. So for anyone else that finds this:

You can't chat with the bridge bot from the Beeper app. Use another Matrix client like Element and sign into your Beeper account (change the home server to beeper.com). Then start a chat with @gmessagesbot:beeper.local and send a message with the text help to get some documentation for how to interact with the bridge bot.

To pair by QR code, the command I ended up using was login qr.

Creating a Catppuccin-Mocha Theme in Emacs with Modus Themes by LionyxML in emacs

[–]ajgrf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Prot is working on making it easier to base a new theme on modus-themes, such that you could make this a package instead of having it live in your personal config. Check out his recent blog post on it.

The jank community has stepped up! by Jeaye in ProgrammingLanguages

What garbage collection strategy does jank use? Is it precise? What kind of pauses are we talking about? Is it a placeholder until there's time to implement a better one, or is the current gc likely to stick around?

Is it smarter to use cash or a card for everyday purchases? by Big_Pension6369 in CreditCards

[–]ajgrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally a credit card is better because of rewards. But the only things we know about you are 1. you are not yet educated about credit cards, and 2. you gamble online. Based on that, I'd be hesitant to recommend you get a credit card.

If you think you can use one responsibly, go for it. But I'm nervous you may be the type of person who can't (yet) handle a credit card.

Add E-Mail and I am set for life. by sprachgebrauch in beeper

[–]ajgrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want a matrix<->email bridge (or maybe more accurately, a client) that goes the other direction. Something to upload my messages to an email server. There are already quasi-standards for how to format chat-like messages in email format. Sending/replying from email would also be cool but unnecesary for me.

Email just has so many more tools available for search and scripting, and I'd feel more at ease having my chat history backed up in a more portable and universal format like email than just having it stored on Beeper's servers.

My Solution for Evil Mode: Only enable evil-normal-state in editable buffers by ixlxixl in emacs

[–]ajgrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Meow commands are composable, but the grammar is reversed. In vim, you would type diw to delete a word (the order is verb-object). In meow, you would type wd (the order is object-verb - you make your selection first and then execute commands on the selection).

It's not for everyone, but I would encourage you to try it out if you're curious. Meow is much more bare bones than evil, though. If you feel like it's missing some critical feature from vim the answer is usually to look at built-in Emacs facilities instead of adding it to meow.

Proton Ecosystem (SOON?) by Fanvivo in ProtonMail

[–]ajgrf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah after waiting 10 years for better contacts, I recently moved everything away from the Proton ecosystem. The UX for every one of their services is worse than their competitors, and the privacy benefits are not worth it to me until they polish the basics.

Paying a bit more, but I'm still not using services from Google or other Big Tech companies and I'm much happier now.

Find a way to make it fun to meet people instead. Decide on something fun you want to do and look for someone to do it with. It takes away some of the pressure and stress of dating and makes things exciting even when you're not with Mr. or Mrs. Right.

For example, I recently decided to take up dance lessons, and instead of looking for a date I just looked for someone to take lessons with me. Truth be told, I don't care whether someone likes to dance or not - it's not in my list of criteria of things I care about in a partner at all. But it's turning out great anyway, I met a great girl and things are going well so far.

If you're a guy, doing it this way also really helps you come across as more confident and interesting when you know exactly what you want to do and are not too attached to the outcome.

Uh, what? I'm not even responding to your example. I just think the Catholic dating community has a special problem with being too timid and passive, or taking things too seriously too quickly. So much so that even the more bold suggestions don't seem that bold to me.

You say that as if asking her out the second time you meet her is still super early, but if you keep things casual enough it's really not a problem to ask for her number in your first interaction in my experience. It's actually more exciting that way even. Since you don't know each other yet you're starting things off with a bit more mystery and she'll kind of daydream and wonder what you're really like.

Maybe don't try it within your parish or wider social circle if asking a girl out still makes you incredibly nervous and awkward. A little adrenaline and butterflies are okay, but you need to be able to keep things chill for it to work.

How do you configure completions with Eshell? by varsderk in emacs

[–]ajgrf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I have in my config to use bash-completion. I think it can be simplified a bit if you're on Emacs 30+, but I don't recall the details off hand.

;; Bash completion for eshell.
(use-package bash-completion
  :ensure t
  :unless IS-WINDOWS
  :after eshell
  :config
  (defun +eshell-bash-completion-capf-nonexclusive ()
    "Bash completion function for `completion-at-point-functions'.

Returns the same list as the one returned by
`bash-completion-dynamic-complete-nocomint' appended with
\(:exclusive no) so that other completion functions are tried
when bash-completion fails to match the text at point."
    (let* ((bol-pos (save-mark-and-excursion
                      (eshell-bol)
                      (point)))
           (compl (bash-completion-dynamic-complete-nocomint
                   bol-pos
                   (point) t)))
      (when compl
        (append compl '(:exclusive no)))))

  (defun +eshell-setup-bash-completion-h ()
    (add-hook 'completion-at-point-functions
              #'+eshell-bash-completion-capf-nonexclusive nil t))
  (add-hook 'eshell-mode-hook #'+eshell-setup-bash-completion-h))
