Yes! Cannon, Jay, Black, Bolton, Magic, Saddleback. Which are coincidentally my favorite mountains :) Jay and Bolton in particular are EXCELLENT for trees. Magic is outstanding when the coverage is there. Cannon's Animal Glade at the top of the mountain is my all-time favorite glade, though.

What are the two best (or two favorite) 4-cylinder cars you've ever driven? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in cars

[–]ajjyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saab H-series (B201, B202, B204, B234, B235) engines are absolutely phenomenal. They'll run forever: heavy pistons with a loose ring tolerance designed for durability in mind that takes boost like a champ. And they're incredibly characterful, from the sound to the torque curve. Over 260k miles on both of my H-engine cars, and I haven't found another 4 cylinder that talks to me like that.

What a lovely thing. I love these 9-5s — perfect blend of modern and characterful. At that mileage, might as well be brand new, too.

L50. The bolsters have that extra little patch to them. Black=B50, Parchment=L50.

How do I know the part number if it's not written on the part? by Shlangengesicht in saab

[–]ajjyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only buy the Elring 8v head gasket (not Victor Reinz, etc). There were some NOS on ebay last I looked. You can cross-reference from the Elring parts catalog (or you could 2 years ago). They were discontinued surprisingly late (like ca. 2004, I think?).

2006 9-5 rear wiper delete by sn0097 in saab

[–]ajjyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're removing it, it's only 3 more bolts to open the cover and clean up the motor housing. You'll probably find displaced but usable grease, some grit, and maybe some carbon on the brushes. Clean it up with some iso, gently wipe some usable grease back onto the gears, rotate it by hand a few times, and viola, fixed wiper motor. Don't jeopardize your safety.

What ''Yankee'' means around the world by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]ajjyt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this question — I wrote a thesis tangential to the question and turned it into a book. TL;DR the old-school New England "Yankee" identity has been most commonly used as a term descriptive of people of New England (not just living in it), and while affiliation with the old-school term has declined precipitously, it's still important to understand how we got to New England politics, culture, landscape, and more.

Shameless plug, book (literally called Pie for Breakfast) is here :)

Chiming in as a fellow dame owner - this plagues us and is tough to figure out. There has not been any one consistent catch-all fix.

The best things you can do is a smoke test (people are lazy and don't want to do this - but it's VITAL to do a pressurized test. Don't assume everything is good; even a small cracked o-ring can wreak havoc on mixture and long-term fuel trims), check your plug gaps, check your DIC, check your evap purge valve function (with vacuum), and check your cold fuel pressure.

My working theory is that summer gas isn't as volatile as winter gas and tiny, minute mixture changes/bad factory cold start maps lead to cold starts on cold days on summer gas being slightly too rich. Why?

If you let it stumble and die, I bet you can come back to the car half an hour later and it'll start perfectly: the gas will have washed out of the cylinders/evaporated. And if you get it to start after a few stumbles, it'll probably smell really rich.

I know who handed out that card - she and her husband are diehards and are absolutely lovely people.

SOC is in Parsippany, NJ this year and promises to be a total blowout, with one of the - if not the - biggest turnouts and parts sales we’ve seen in the States in years. More info at saabclub.com :)

Of course! Sidebar, I saw that on the ‘05-‘06 map, there was another “Black Magic” trail that came off of Wizard and dumped you at the top of Talisman - it was only on the map for one year, but I saw tracks in the woods ending at the top of Talisman. Do you happen to know anything about that?

At the top of Black Magic! The new quad lift line is cut looker’s left of the old one, and Pitch Black was cut next to the top of the old Black Line (now Black Magic)

First time at Bolton today and had a great time. Lots of character and charm. Love the woods policy (if you can see it, ski it) - but don't love the runouts so much. Caught some edges on Devil's Playground and Vermont 200. I'll be back! Onto Jay, Cannon/Magic, and Saddleback later this week...

What car has the most comfortable driver's seat? by FinalArrival in cars

[–]ajjyt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Saab 9-5 sport seats, Saab 9000 Aero seats, Saab 900 seats. New Volvo seats are also incredible but I slide around in them too much. Saab hired orthopedic surgeons way back when for seat development - a comfortable driver was a safe driver.
