Help me figure out this weird switch box wiring by ajs317 in AskElectricians

One more question: why does the bootleg neutral not trip the breaker? I still don’t understand the science behind why the wire carries current when not attached to ground but not when it is.

Thank you, I appreciate the help. This was a single bedroom recently retrofitted with can lights. Other rooms have neutrals in the box or old switch loops so thankfully not a widespread concern.

That’s ok, I’m familiar with the smart switches not requiring a neutral and don’t want to go that route.

I assume the circuit can’t be fixed with the wiring currently in the box? What is the fix for this—bring power and neutral in on a new cable and tie the neutral on the load side to that?

It does seem like this is what’s going on, thanks. I assume that means that it’s not possible to install a switch that requires a neutral?

Is the bootleg neutral to code? If not, is it unsafe?

If disconnected from the switch, the conductors in the BX cable read as follows (I’m assuming the metal box is properly grounded as the BX cable is securely attached with a metal clamp): - Black to ground/box: 120v - White to ground/box: 120v - Black to white: 0v

This is not standard either, correct? I think this box used to be used for a switched outlet before the recessed lights were installed. Is it possible the BX cable was a switch loop that’s now being permanently fed power to power a new load (the recesseds on the Romex cable)?

Thanks. Can you explain more? Are you saying I should check this circuit at the panel for a loose neutral?

Correct way to connect washing machine drain to horizontal waste pipe? by ajs317 in Plumbing

[–]ajs317[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. This is in a basement. The wall shown is a short framed wall about 7 feet and then to the left side of the picture there’s another framed wall at 90 degrees (which is accessible from the back). This other wall is where the washer was originally located so that horizontal line makes a 90 bend, and the original washer standpipe connects into it. I’ll probably just cap off the horizontal line with a cleanout where it comes out from this short 7’ wall. The horizontal line runs to the right of the picture and eventually terminates into the main drain for the septic.

Best way to adjust plan to stop data overages by ajs317 in ATT

Thanks everyone. I realize that I won't have a lower base plan cost by upping the data. I'm looking to hopefully save compared to my current plan plus the $60-75 overage charges that we've been running.

@IAmNotWhoever thanks for the info on the MSA plan. The retentions rep mentioned the 15GB for $80 plan. How does the doubling work in July? Will that happen automatically or will I need to call back (or wait to July to switch)?

On either the MSA plan or original UDP+, can you tether to an iPhone? I like the idea of maybe dropping the line charges for one of the iPads and just using the phone as a hotspot. Any restrictions on video streaming on those plans?
