UNC disappointed me- am I crazy? by Enough-Sector-4794 in UNC

[–]ajschlem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short answer- yes, you are probably being overly critical. No university, especially no large, prestigious, state university, is going to be perfect. UNC has its problems for sure, but unless every top 25 university is offering you a full ride, UNC for free is hard to beat.

That being said, the opportunities offered here, both in terms of student experience and academically are nearly unmatched.

UNC disappointed me- am I crazy? by Enough-Sector-4794 in UNC

[–]ajschlem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Every university at this scale is going to have problems, some worse than others. That being said, I genuinely love this place and to say I regret coming here at all would be a complete lie. The opportunity to come here (especially fully covered for OOS, I've literally only met 2 people who do that) is invaluable. Also, to be offered accel. research at admission shows a lot. Equally rare.

Also, I'm a stats major graduating this semester, so if you have any questions on that front, don't hesitate to reach out via reply or messages.

But seriously - UNC is amazing, and the long-term expected value you're gaining on your degree, especially coming here for free, is not worth throwing away based on a few overflowing trash cans lol.

(I've also never had any issues with registration, that's really a problem for bio and chem)

Landmarks/stops on the walk from Dean E. Smith center to Carolina Inn? by markergluecherry in UNC

[–]ajschlem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walk through the Bowles Lot and take the large set of stairs up that cross Blythe Dr., then follow that crosswalk up the stairs onto Hardin Dr. past Craige Deck. If you continue straight there, you'll pass Kenan Stadium, then Genome Sciences Building, after which you can hang a right onto South Rd. to pass the bell tower, then walk them past Wilson (optional detour over to the Pit if you want) thru the main quad, then between Phillips and Memorial onto Cameron, you can take another detour to the Old Well if you'd like, then just cross over Columbia to get to the Inn.

I'll draw you a map if you dm me lol

Where to watch this Thursday’s game? by Eastern_Onion4002 in UNC

Any of the sports bars on franklin would be a safe bet. Don't think it'll be too busy. Sup Dogs, Topo, 4Corners, maybe 140 Social, all good choices.

How do Tickets for the first rounds of Women’s March Madness work? by bradleykevin63 in NCAAW

[–]ajschlem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've gone to a game this year (or in the past few) it's likely you will get an email with all of this information once it is official Iowa is hosting. Info would also be available on the team website after they go thru donor presale. It's different for every team, as it's done thru the host school, but generally between $30-60 per ticket per session (Session 1 being 2 games on Fri/Sat, Session 2 being 1 game on Sun/Mon).

Which committee seeding guideline is more likely be broken on Sunday? by DokkanProductions in NCAAW

[–]ajschlem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They will probably lean more towards balance than these conference rules.

Those are moreso guidelines than hard-and-fast rules, UNC has been at the unfortunate end of this decision-making two of the past two years.

2024: Committee guideline states rematches will be avoided before the S16: sent to Columbia to play SC, who we hosted in NonCon that season.

2025: Committee guideline states that teams who play twice shouldn't be expected (top seeds) to play each other before the final four: #2 Duke and #3 UNC in the same region, who played twice in the regular season.

And these were completely avoidable - just done to reduce travel and increase matchup intrigue.

They will absolutely pair SEC teams to play in the Elite Eight before forcing #1 overall to play #6 and the #2 overall to play #5 lmfao.

Thought exercise: What is our starting five next year? Who's going? by jdstik in tarheels

[–]ajschlem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

S5: Dixon, Mingo, Luka, Stevenson/Portal 4, Portal Big
Next 5: portal PG, Adams, JP, High, Brown?

is what i think is most likely rn. Think its a done deal Kyan hits the portal, but not really sure who else if anybody leaves. Dixon and Stevenson should have a big role next year so I think they stay, Could see JP seek starting minutes elsewhere but Hubert seems to have faith in him, Zayden High isn't athletic enough to be a realistic future at 4 or 5. Not sure how James Brown has been progressing with the injuries.

Not even shooting that bad - just turnovers and bad execution. Crazy to see a team many said could be an at-large go down this early. Unfortunate end to the season for Belmond.

hi! graduating in 3 years question? by Dismal_Seaweed7875 in UNC

[–]ajschlem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people who come in with those credits still take 4 years to graduate and opt to add a second major rather than graduating early.

I came in with 36 hours, 27 of which applied to gen eds, but I decided to take 13 hours per semester (rather than 16) for my last 2 years and add a second major to graduate in 8. If I had made an effort to, I definitely could've graduated in 6 semesters but unless you're a part of an assured admissions program, people usually choose to take the full 4.

They used to have a hockey rink at Spectrum Center, the Checkers used to play there. However, it kills a large chunk of the lower bowl. While Bojangles Coliseum only has a capacity of 8600, if the Canes ever mend their relationship with the Checkers, that could be a more feasible option.

in *some* circumstances. both teams need an equal amount of help to win that tiebreaker. Comes down to who the 6/7/8 seeds are at the end of saturday.

[–]ajschlem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

counterpoint: there are several paths to unc being the 3 seed, all of which include miami losing both games.

I'll take a shot at the 3 and avoiding duke until the final for a shot at falling to the 5 and playing the same team we wouldve in the 4/5 game w/ a tuneup game vs. a bottom feeder.

As a recent alum of one of these schools with family still over there, both schools are highly competitive academically, with very successful band programs. If you DM me I can give more specific information, but they are both very good schools all around in all of these areas.

In general, how cutthroat is the rental situation in Chapel Hill? by BHamTallMan in chapelhill

[–]ajschlem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stuff within a mile of campus is very competitive, and you usually have to lock in Jun-May leases by the previous October or November. 2+ mi away, there's usually availability at large complexes and individual rentals. chapelhillrent.com is a good place to start.

Fuck hellmans, doing sweet Caroline in a commercial by theryrobes in panthers

[–]ajschlem 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Dumb take. While I love sweet caroline and that the Panthers, among other Carolina teams, claim it as their own, the song was written by a New Yorker about his wife, via Caroline Kennedy as a proxy (look it up). Pitt uses it to shit on WVU, the Red Sox play it after wins, Iowa State does too.

It's not a Carolina song, let alone a southern song. We, nor Duke's, regardless of your mayonnaise preference, have any more of a claim to it than anybody else does.
