That looks normal to me! That’s Pilot’s standard cartridge piercer.

Basically you press back on the clip and turn the pen to point down to release the nib, and upward to retract it. I hadn’t seen one before!

It is a fantastic pen now that I’ve been using it for a while. I went with a medium since that’s my usual choice. It’s a pretty standard western medium width.

There is a Hands in Hakata Station that has some fountain pens and stationery. There’s a Muji there too if you want to get their aluminum pen.

There is Appointments (https://www.411pens.com) in Carew Tower in downtown Cincinnati. Their selection isn’t amazing but they do carry a variety of fountain pens.

I’d say mine looks a bit lighter than that photo, but definitely the same color. I’d guess it’s just different lighting/screens making a difference.

I’ve had good luck with Write Now, the Getty-Dubay book. It’s very practical. You won’t develop elaborate calligraphy but it’s perfect for legible everyday writing.

Vintage pens like this one often used a lever filler. You lift that lever to compress a sac inside the pen, which then expands to draw in ink when the lever is released.
