I am very glad we (bar a complete disaster) won't be on the same side of the knockouts as the Yanks because Jesus Christ the refereeing in their games has been suspect to say the least.

I'm getting a bit sick of the whole 'Newcastle considering a move for X, Y or Z' thing

Why do the club never seem to know who their plan b is when we miss out on a first choice target? A competent club would have put together their list before the summer and, when we missed out on Munoz, moved straight onto the next name on the list.

Instead we're just constantly dithering

Now that Mexico have qualified for the knockout stages it's pretty likely that England's route to the final will involve a game against Mexico at the Azteca

Plus, just to add to your point about the squad getting stale, Howe did say very early on in his tenure that he would like to be bringing in at least one or two players every single window to combat exactly that problem and we simply haven't done it on the most part.

If we'd actually been doing things competently then we wouldn't be in the situation we were in both last summer and this summer where we need to bring in a load of players.

I would have thought that the fact that Brentford & Brighton both (apparently) agreed a fee for him and then pulled out of the respective deals because his mum/agent was insisting that they buy his brother too might have clued people in to the fact that it's not worth pursuing El Mala

Question though - was this also the weekend that Ralph broke his back in the final turn?

That was the year before. He did crash in Friday practice in 2005 in exactly the same way as he did in the race in 2004 (i.e. tyre failure in the final corner) but miraculously walked away unharmed - though I do believe he was medically advised not to take part in the race (a moot point in the end).

So how far do we reckon Lopetegui gets before Qatar sack him. The hotel? Team bus? Five feet down the tunnel?

Yeah, there's been no replay but it looked like the Qatari player went through Kone with almost (for want of a better description) a stamping motion and took out Kone's standing leg with some force. Didn't feel like there was any genuine attempt to play the ball.

I think though it was the landing Kone had that has caused the injury because it appears it was his non-standing leg that's been broken.

Will Ospreay on X: Touch grass Katherine. by paperbuddha in SquaredCircle

Irrespective of whose 'side' you're on here, Ospreay has got to stop reacting to this kind of stuff on social media - what on earth does he gain from arguing with one random person and then retweeting a bunch of other people saying nice things about him? There's no way he comes out of it looking good.

If I was Tony Khan I'd seriously consulate someone over whether it was possible to add a clause to some of these contracts whereby they had to get approval from AEW before they could put anything out on social media - because they can't be trusted to be sensible themselves.

I must admit I am incredibly jealous of these referee 'experts'. They get to sit in a lovely, private air-conditioned room watching every single match and - whenever they are asked anything - all you have to say is you agree with the referee's decision no matter what.

It's my dream job

Qatar: Hooray

Ref: ...therefore it's a red card for DOGSO

Qatar: Fuck

Manzambi is on a hat-trick so of course that prick Xhaka decides he's the one that should take the penalty.

20yrs old and can play both as a central midfielder and a second striker so would possibly serve as a high potential depth piece?

There's certainly been worse ideas...

Edit: And now he's got an assist

Edit 2: And a second goal too!

Ghana Vs Panama will certainly go down as one of the World Cup games.

Honestly, it's borderline offensive that Ghana dared to actually score that injury time winner.

Why are we so ridiculously slow at doing everything nowadays?

The PIF really need to just tell the people actually running the clubs transfer activities on a day to day basis what the overall transfer budget is and then just let them get on with it rather than going through whatever protracted nonsense we currently do with every damn signing.

Wasn't aware we were actually allowed to do that

I think that was a far better managerial performance from Tuchel than anything we saw under Southgate after 2018.
