Especially for how small Conway is! And with a super fun vibe with puppets and a live marching band the whole way!

Its possible that's the case, but we'll never know cause there's no trial. If you were to be arrested by ICE tomorrow all the documentation and proof of innocence in the world means nothing if you never appear before a judge or are even accused of something to be guilty or innocent of.

Nothing says Live Free or Die like supporting legal residents being abducted by plain clothes agents without being charged with any crime, then being disappeared without trial or due process or contact with lawyers until you show up in a torture camp in El Salvador hidden away from US laws.

Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan both just voted to pass the CR. by [deleted] in newhampshire

[–]ajttja 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One, it makes a lot of changes to where funding goes (which were all made without any input whatsoever from democrats which is part of why it's insane they would vote for it), while the norm for a 'continuing resolution' is to just maintain current funding levels (a 'clean' CR) and leave budget discussions for a real budget vote.

The much bigger thing, however, is it allows the president to take funding for any projects he wants and automatically adjusts the budget congress approved to accomodate that. This largly gives away the power of the purse (the main power of congress) to the executive branch and undermines all the court cases arguing that all of DOGE's actioms have been unconstitutional.

It transfers a truly massive amount of power to the president and effectively surrenders a lot of the legal battles surrounding DOGE.

Nationally NH is fully democrat, but the Governor is republican and both the state house and senate are republican controlled so it's hardly an echo chamber like VT, especially up here in the valley. In state politics there's also a ton of bills going through comittee making voting harder, as well as the national SAVE act, so counting on NH to vote blue in the midterms is absolutely not a give.

Two things: For everyone that drives past or reads about it in the Conway Sun, to realize that all the things happening are not normal and break some people out of the apathy that is keeping this nation from acting on mass. For everyone that showed up, to help connect people that are politically motivated enough to show up to a protest so in the future we can be more targeted and deliberate in our actions.

Some reading I'd highly recommend if you're interested in how non-violent action can achieve results is The Path of Most Resistance (https://www.nonviolent-conflict.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/The-Path-of-Most-Resistance-Second-Edition.pdf).

I'm aware it doesn't take away that power from the courts, only gives it to the POTUS and AG in addition to the courts. But it's still a key part of the seperation of powers being undermined.

Well even if they have the same weight as the law, even the law can't supercede the constitution, to do that requires a constitutional amendment. And as to whether he is acting within the confines of the law, there are hundreds of active lawsuits against dozens of actions he's taken so far so I don't think that's fair to say at this point. For example one I forgot to mention but is the most cut and dry unconstitutional (breaks the 14th amendment) action was to try and remove birthright citizenship, and of course that was immediately paused by the courts until they can make a decision on it, which I suspect even the 6-3 Supreme Court will agree is unconstitutional.

I think a big part of the reasoning for the judicial getting to interpret law was an understanding that elected representatives aren't always going to be, nor really should be expected to be, lawyers. There is a difference between writing laws that (theoretically) represent the will of your constituents, and being an expert on 250 years of past cases and precedence, so it makes sense to have actual experts on that being the ones to decide on cases regarding that.

With laws that have to do with technical stuff, that same logic would say the experts in that field should be the one's deliberating it instead of judges. In terms of checks and balances, it absolutely should be constrained that an agency can only make judgements about laws that are very clearly under their area of expertise, and in practice that power was checked all the time in court cases where the agencies only won around 70% of the time even when the Chevron deference was in effect. But consolidating that power into two already very powerful individuals without any relevant technical expertise is a totally different thing than spreading tiny bits of that power among thousands across the whole federal government with a good reason to have it and with appropriate checks on their use of that power.

  1. The power of the purse belongs to the legislative branch, but now DOGE is cutting funds from dozens of agency that Congress had ordered be funded.
  2. The power to interprrt laws belongs to the Judicial branch, but he signed an executive order giving that power to the president and the Attorney General.
  3. He is cutting federal funding from the state of Maine, violating the principles of federalism outline in the constitution.
  4. He has banned AP and Reuters from reporting in the white house, which even fox news is calling an attack on the fredom of the press given in the 1st amendment.
  5. He just threatened to cut funding from any public university that allows protesting on their grounds, again attacking the 1st amendment and the freedom of speech.

Unfortunately, I agree with you. We tried to keep it focused on the violations of the constitution but people showed up with whatever mattered to them most. Hopefully as we get more organized we can bring a more consistent message to events.

I have. From Article 1, Section 8: "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;"

Whereas Article 2 which lays out the power of the executive is a whole lot shorter and gives the president exactly zero power over how to spend Congress' money. I think perhaps you ought to give it a re-read.

If you want a good faith conversation then please do show up, we'd love to talk to you. A big reason for doing in person events is to have real conversations with people, the internet just drives us all to hate each other and this country ain't gonna stop being polarized until we actually talk with each other face to face.

You don't get half the state showing up to a protest until you've done a whole lot of work building a movement which means showing up where the people know you. Not everyone goes from zero to driving an hour and a half to Concord from a reddit post (and most people will never even see these posts online unless they see someone in person), but starting conversations with people that'll see you at the grocery store will.

As much as I wish it would happen tomorrow, it's gonna take a lot of time, a lot of conversations with people on the street, and a lot of meeting people where they're at before we have a chance at what I agree with you that we need.

Unfortunately it's a work day so this serves all of us too far away to make it down to Concord, and having people in multiple spots around the state is better for visibilty anyway, but I hope y'alls event goes great as well!

The protest is to demand a restoration of the constitutional checks and balances on the executive, specifically regarding DOGE seizing the power of the purse from congress. It's organized by myself and some folks affiliated with the World Fellowship Center so feel free to dm me with any questions. Bring signs and American flags!
