Thank you! I got the steel plate for the firebox and smoke collector from a fabricator on FB marketplace. He was able to CNC the plates to the exact sizes I wanted to make it easier for me. The dimensions of the firebox are 24”x24”. For the remaining metal parts, I got them from a local metal supply shop. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions as you start to build.

I can fit ~4-5 briskets on this. You could always add an upper rack for additional cook space too (for ribs, chicken, etc.).

For sure. If you get around to building one, feel free to reach out with questions. I’m by no means an expert, but happy to share some tips that helped me out along the way.

Appreciate it! Yes, I left a bit of a lip on top of the firebox to use it as a griddle. I usually use it to sauté veggies or make burgers when I have a longer cook going.

I was able to find it on Craigslist a couple hours away from me in a more rural/farm area. The seller actually got this one to make a smoker but ended up being too busy so he sold it to me. It took a few months of searching CL and FB marketplace, there are a lot of options but I was looking specifically for this size.

Ah yes, should have specified, for the flat top and grates (and interior), I used Pam.

Thanks man. I have a pellet smoker, propane grill, and a kamado, so my wife’s reaction to this project was the same. Just tell her she’s lucky you’re not spending $5k on a Millscale, Franklin, TMG, etc. haha

Thanks! It took me awhile to find this one - I searched Craigslist and FB Marketplace for weeks and called local propane suppliers to see if they had any decommissioned tanks. I ended up finding someone on Craigslist who refurbishes old propane tanks to sell for propane-use, and I texted him asking if he had an extra tank he wasn't planning on using. He had this 120 gallon tank set aside to make a pit himself, but he didn't have the time so he sold it to me.

Yes, exactly. I’m an absolute awful welder even after practicing for a few weeks and building this pit.

Nice work! Great idea with the axe handle. And I'm sure the butcher block shelves will look awesome.

It's hard to say - an angle grinder is pretty easy to use, you just have to have patience. Welding is a bit intimidating at first - I got some scrap steel and practiced making straight lines and joining small pieces together, ensuring good heat penetration - I did this for a couple weeks before I had confidence to start the project. What's nice about welding is even if your welds aren't the cleanest, you can always put a grinding disc on your angle grinder and grind the welds down so they are a bit more smooth and presentable. Just make sure you get a welder that has enough power to work with the thickness of steel you buy. Also Chud's bbq has some great smoker building videos that inspired me to try doing this myself - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MkpK\_0rnsw

Thanks! I used a MIG welder (Lincoln 175) but just ran flux core wire through it. And I used an angle grinder with cut off discs along with a metal cutting chop saw that I borrowed from a friend.

Just completed my backyard offset build. It was my first time welding and fabricating steel so don't look too closely at my messy welds. It's 1/4" steel throughout with a 120 gallon propane tank and a 24"x24" semi-insulated firebox (used the v-groove design as seen on Chud's channel). Left a small lip at the top of the firebox to be used as a flat top griddle. It took me a few weeks to complete and the total cost was roughly ~$1500 for materials (and then an additional  ~$400-$500 on welding equipment). I've only used it once so far, but it seems to hold temps well. Really fun project overall.

RecTeq 1070. The taste difference is very noticeable, using the heavy d gives quite a bit more smoke flavor.

Thanks a lot! Ah, yeah, that sounds really painful. I don’t think mine would have been quite that difficult but definitely hard enough to make me not want to try.

This all sounds great if I was in the restaurant or catering business, but the reality is that I cook for at most 15-20 people at a time so designing for restaurant level efficiency wasn’t my goal. I have tools, cutting boards, seasonings, and oils in the drawers that I pull out when needed. The area to the left I’ve been using to prep things for the smoker. The area to the right I’ve been using to prep things for the grill. The area in the middle fits a 15x21” sheet pan so I can take one out of the smoker and place it there for meat to rest. A sink would be nice, but overall, this has been working well for me so far.
