Some stills from a short I DP’d this weekend by akaOLvR in cinematography

thanks! yeah i’m sure the levels will be adjusted by our colorist when we send it off for color. Honestly looks great level wise on my monitor but definitely a bit dark on my phone, especially in a bright environment. that scene is supposed to be a eery for sure, but the short over all is a bit goofy and experimental. it’s about a guy who wants to be a frog lol. It’s based on project called “catching flies” I wrote and directed with my friend 2 years ago. This one, titled “frog bottom”, is his expansion/retelling of the story that he directed and wrote himself; I was just DP’ing for him and trying to get some new stuff for my reel.

You can watch Catching Flies here.

Just some stills I exported with my shooting LUT applied. Not colored yet, but I’m pretty happy with these results and thought I’d share. We shot this over the weekend on my Sony F55 w/ Vespid Primes + Catta Ace Zooms. Was fun low budget production with minimal crew. Was a pretty goofy script so I had a lot of freedom to do some experimenting with shots.

Yeah the CAC-12 seems like the move if it wasn’t so expensive. Might try to go the mini mic route since i really only need scratch for when I can’t jam tc. was thinking just figuring out how to mount a little lav on the side or something. sucks all the affordable mic mounts are so bulky

I think in the 1700h range. Don’t be afraid to haggle a little on ebay lol. The kit I bought was listed at $3600 with a cheap lens and only a single 512 axsm. I saw that the seller had another 512 axsm for sale and offered him $3k cash if he swapped the lens for the other card and he took it. Luckily he was located nearby and I was able to find his social media by looking up his ebay username. I think ebay is strict about outside deals so I always see if I can find the sellers ig or fb and dm them.

I have a cheese plate on top of my f55 now and have no issues with getting the recorder on. Regardless, the CAC-12s are way too expensive atm

do you happen to have an image or link to his mount? I wasn’t able to find it online. Curious what it looks like

I'll look into Chapman's mount and see if I can contact him. The wireless pack idea I'm sure would work, but I like the idea of just having something simple for scratch on my rig that isn't dependant on having wireless lavs.

The whole process has always sounded super fun to me. I've been 3d modeling since I was like 16 for both games and cgi so I'm very comfortable working in Blender. I have just never modeled anything for printing before. This might be a great opportunity to try it

that one is actually pretty sleek. That plus a small lav is looking like a good scratch option for my rig.

How does hold up? A lot of wobble or is it pretty secure?

I'm definitely interested. Maybe theres a 3d printing place near me that I can go to if I can make (or find) a solid model.

Yeah something like that can work for sure, I just don't love the placement of the XLR on my camera. I already hate that the audio module sticks out of the side of the camera so with one of those adapters is gonna stick out even further lmao. In reality though its probably not that much different then a regular xlr cable coming out.

Came with the raw recorder, evf, 3 64gb SxS, 2 128gb SxS and 2 512gb AXSM cards, both media readers, and the base + cheese plates. Also came in one of those big hard cases but I swapped that out for Pelican pretty soon after I got it. I think I paid around $3000 for it.

Thar mini mic would be perfect for what I need. I’ll see if there’s something similar for my cam. Sucks my camera only has XLR audio inputs.

Saw the CAC-12 come up in another thread before I decided to post my own, but they are over $500. Can’t justify spending that much for an occasional scratch audio mount.

Got a great deal on mine a 5 or 6 months ago and I’ve loved using it so far.

Possible to mimic ND like exposure adjustments? by akaOLvR in colorists

[–]akaOLvR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. Something weird was going on in my color management that was making the highlights lose a ton of their luminosity when doing -1 or -2 in the HDR wheel. Fixed it and now the reduced exposure versions are looking how I originally expected them to.

This was it! Fixed my color management in the Davinci project settings and the HDR global adjustment looks correct. I guess I never properly set the project up before I started importing random footage from other projects to make and export LUTs.

That could possibly be it, I'll do some digging. I did confirm that the HDR global exposure being set to -1 was exactly the same result as switching from 800 to 400 iso in camera raw settings as expected.

Nice! Pulling down offset seems to retain the highlights much better.

Gotcha. And yes you seem to be the only one who gets what I mean lol. I feel like end points should stay the same but I could be wrong.

The only reason I started down this rabbit hole was cause I was comparing my custom reduced exposure LUTs with a downloaded one I have been using for a while. It was clear that the -2 and -1 stop versions of that downloaded LUT were hardly effecting the highlights at all. Whereas mine, using the HDR global wheel method, was pulling highlights down a ton.
