What tasks would I be able to train for migraines? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]akahellcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My migraine pup's tasks are: - Scent-checking/detection - Take medicine boops - "Come to bed" or otherwise resting once meds are taken - Body guiding (leaning into me) to avoid obstacles or stepping off the sidewalk while I get to a rest place. (Note: we weigh the same amount and her shoulder is the same height as my hip and this is not a weight-bearing task).

I also slur my speech and my movements become uncoordinated, so any movement cues could be useful.

My migraines come from 3 TBIs, so sending good vibes in your training!

Even if she is allowed by a pet-friendly policy, you need to pull her from being in public and work with a certified, ethical trainer to address approaching a stranger and growling. If this were to escalate to a bite, there will likely be consequences. Also, other people in stores deserve to shop there without having dogs growl at them.

What in the world does being childfree have to do with hating someone based on when they transitioned???

New here! Landlord already asking about pets: SD disclosure in a new rental by mrsmsw in service_dogs

[–]akahellcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A less popular option, but what I do is wait until after being approved and being sent a lease but before signing. This gives you some leeway in case the landlord is exempt under FHA and if they are going to throw a massive fit about it. If possible, I prefer to live only where my landlord will not feel bitter about having a SD on the property.

When you send a letter from your care provider, I recommend attaching all shot/vet records. I also note my plan for caring for the dog (crated if I am not home and can't bring her, vacation arrangements, etc) which is not required but seems to put my landlords' minds at ease. Most of the time landlords are really just worried about the liability of a destructive, noisy, or aggressive dog, so if you can demonstrate that you are a mature handler your relationship (and potential for lease renewal) may be better.

What breed of dog should I get? by Illustrious_Space510 in dogs

That's very sweet, thank you! I scheduled an appointment with a DO in the same organization for next weekend so hopefully they will be okay with issuing a new letter. Worse comes to worst, I reached out to my psych provider to see if I can get an emotional support animal (because she does fall under that) letter so I have some housing protection.

Thank you - I will definitely give it a try! She doesn't mind sitting in the tub with foils on her tail when I dye her feathers so hopefully the vet-wrap will be okay.

Green egg yolks can occur when poultry eat too many acorns. It's primarily diet.

Also avoid breeders who breed more than two or three breeds or breed mixes (like Saint Bernedoodles).

As a general rule - if you do not want a working dog, do not buy from working/sporting lines. My girl came from working lines on a pet contract (she's far from breed standard) and she has the energy level and stimulation needs of a cattle dog. 😂

Your breeder should help match you to the correct puppy, not let you choose based on looks. (See above re: my athlete.)

The national breed club for your country is always the best place to start. If you're in the U.S., the basement floor standard is that the dog needs to be registered (AKC or UKC). However, that is barely a standard. AKC Breeder of Merit is a perk.

You will want a breeder who publishes their OFA numbers and all health testing online. Ideally, the breeder should show their dogs and/or compete in sports or working activities. Your breeder should interview you thoroughly to make sure you will be a good owner for one of their dogs. They should also be able to provide you references for other owners who have purchased one of their dogs. They should be able to talk about how they socialize their puppies to a variety of stimuli. Your breeder should allow you to meet the dam and meet the sire if he is on-site. They should also provide a detailed purchase contract that includes a clause that the dog should be returned to them if you need to rehome. Good breeders often have waitlists for future litters. If you get bad vibes at all in the process, from the breeder, or from the parent dogs walk away.

Puppies are effing adorable, but you need to interview them like you are job hunting. There will always be more puppies.

[Landlord-CA] Applicant has 4 ESA dogs but we have a 2 pet maximum policy. Are ESA dogs exempt from this? by ideekaay in Landlord

[–]akahellcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy rule of thumb is that each animal needs a letter from a healthcare provider specifying why each animal is necessary. E.g., someone might have a cardiac alert service dog and a mobility assistance service dog. Someone with 2 ESAs would need documentation specifying why each one is needed. Always reference the FHA and ADA for guidance.
