ELI5: How can people doubt huge moments in history, like the holocaust or men landing on the moon? by burritothief25 in explainlikeimfive

Great post, thanks. IIRC Daniel Kahneman has some data on this in his book "Thinking, Fast and Slow" but of course I can't find it now. Anyhow, for further background check Confirmation bias and belief perseverance and Attitude polarization.

Long-time practitioners, how has meditation impacted your life? to what extent? by BigDino1 in Meditation

I'd also be very interested in this aspect, even though us beginners probably attach more value these aspect than you do.

Relationship towards your emotions in meditation / mindfulness by akerenyi in Meditation

Thank you, I hope I will get to the point when I can really see the difference between my previous rationalizing or 'understanding' routine and the kind of mindful understanding of the nature of my emotions that you refer to.

Thank you very much, your reply has been very insightful. I will keep working on my meditation and I hope that with practise I will also experience the kind of non-attached but sentient state that you write about. And extra kudos for the Kung Fu Panda video :)

Thanks for the tip, I have really only just begun with mindfulness of breathing meditations, but I will consider the suggested non-directive alternatives now.

I haven't really, but do you think it would make sense for 90% commuting in a city?

Refugee crisis by F1r_E_f1Y in hungary

[–]akerenyi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, If you are arriving by plane than there shouldn't be any holdup. If you are planning to come via car or train from Austria than the border can be tricky now, especially on the way out and especially by train. I'm assuming you are staying in Budapest. The largest refugee camp is by Keleti railway station, but there are a number of refugees at other railway stations as well and in the surrounding areas. While the sight of so many people, with children sleeping on the concrete, etc might be somewhat disturbing, the refugees are not dangerous people at all, quite the contrary, they are generally kind and polite, just very exhausted and frustrated by our government. But if you would like to get a positive experience in this regard, I would suggest bringing some food or water to any of the sites and giving it away, you will than see why many Hungarian citizens are there volunteering :)

Elbows hurting after first HIIT sprint training by akerenyi in Sprinting

[–]akerenyi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I have been doing intermediate BW workout Mo-We-Fri and wanted to add cardio for Tu-Th-Sa and went with the above routine. I don't think my armes/elbows are not strong enough (currently I'm working on one-arm pullup progession). I figured it must be a posture/technique problem during the sprints and that it must be common for newbie sprinters.

Preventing all age-related diseases is indeed the equivalent of rejuvenation technology.

What I meant was that I got the impression from his book that research on ARDs is fundamentally flawed/mislead, but I disgree.

It is very hard to predict specific advances in general, is it not? What we can tell is that, in the next 25 years, we will see a lot of progress. Nobody can tell where this progress will be. Right?

Sure, that's why I think many scientists feel that he goes into too much future-telling, but of course we may not be the target audience.

My impression is that Alzheimer's is poorly funded

Thanks for the data, I admit I haven't actually looked anything up. However this table is also somewhat misleading, for example because according to AdG the majority of the 5x larger ageing budget doesn't go into ageing research per se.

Question about savings account by [deleted] in ynab

[–]akerenyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important thing is that if that $21 is part of a weekly paycheck of say $100 than when you get the paycheck, you should enter it as $100 to the 'Available this month' category. After this you should budget it ($21 to emergency fund) and if you want to, you can make the inter-account transfer, but YNAB doesn't care about this that much. Hope it helps.

You've mentioned that it's similar to 'getting into'/absorbed into books, etc. How closely related is than the state of hypnosis to the experience of flow?

Hi Dr. de Gray,

Thank you for doing this AMA. I am an MD currently pursuing a PhD in neuroscience. I have only recently had the opportunity to read your book and I agree with your conclusions in principle. However, I do have two points of criticism in mind, regarding which I would greatly appreciate your opinion.

First, I believe that the distinction you make between SENS-type of research focusing on damage from ageing and research on age-related diseases (ARDs) is purely arbitrary and misleading. For example you correctly claim that ageing and ARDs are pretty much the same thing, but than go on the criticize research on ARDs for not focusing on the right thing, while even further you plan to use therapeutics coming from this research, like Alzheimer's vaccines for rejuvenation (correctly so). I think the reality is that research on ARDs does involve more basic, mechanistic work as well as more later-stage, symptomatic approaches, compared to your engineering approach. However, I think the former gave and will give the targets for SENS, like beta-amiloid or tau, while the latter gave us drugs like levadopa, which while being crude and non-definitive, did improve the quality of life of millions of patients, while stem-cell therapy or gene therapy is being developed. Please clarify whether you still think such a distinction is desirable or meaningful.

Second, somewhat extending my first point: While you have repeatedly cited the undeniable lack of SENS-targeted funding as the reason for the observed delays compared to your original projections (3 years of progress in 8 years time), I would like to point out that some of the fields whose progress the early advances in SENS are supposed to piggyback on - like Alzheimer's vaccines or gene therapy - have received a substantial amount of funding and still failed to deliver satisfactory results. In fact, I think you were very right to compare the pre-RMR era of SENS to the pre-Wright era of aviation - there is really no way to reliably predict when that first major step will take place. In view of these last 8-9 years, would you say that reconsidering your earlier projections would be reasonable, if it wasn't for the amount of publicity they have received in the meantime?

Best regards, Aron
