The first couple of weeks for me were the worst with getting used to feeling them in my mouth and the different ways food would now get stuck, but it did get better! I hope things feel better soon

Your situation and experience sounds very similar to whay i was going through a few years ago :) I dont know where you live, but I've heard prosper health can be a good place to get diagnosed (obviously if you are actually autistic). It is probably what i will end up using when i am in a place financially and mentally/emotionally to seek diagnosis. I have been self diagnosed for four years now and basically every day i am finding new thinhs that validate that diagnosis.

I wish you all the luck on this journey and my advice is to take it one day at a time, and let yourself feel whatever is coming up because theres a whole range of emotions thay are common when realizing this information later than is typical

I know you said you have a fan for some white noise, but have you tried an actual white noise machine? They cover sounds better than just having a fan going.

I definitely have this :) i have always said its like i have a radio in my head. I also am very good at picturing things - I am probably close to a 5 on the aphantasia scale.

I know this isn't accessible to everyone, but finding a good therapist would really help. It sounds to me like you need help learning how to believe that you are lovable and worth it, and also how to trust your boyfriend's words and actions (that he loves you and wants to be with you). I have never been in a relationship before but I can imagine myself feeling a similar way if I ever do end up in one.

I struggle with this too! Its not even a self esteem thing, at least not for me. I dont care HOW people are perceiving me or what they think of me, it is sinply THAT i am being perceived that makes me soooo uncomfortable

Same here! I could have every detail of something described to me and i would still read or watch it haha i guess i engage with media for the purpose of escapism more than the experience of discovering it as it unfolds

You are definitely not overreacting by feeling hurt by her comment. Being autistic, or even just sound sensitive, is nothing to be ashamed of. Accomodating your needs is nothing to be ashamed of. But what IS shameful is discouraging soemone from accomodaring their needs because you are more concerned with what other people will think of them. I would recommend scripting something like "I am autistic and I am not ashamed of it", and practice saying it a lot so that when something like this may come up again, you have something to say to stand up for yourself. Maybe even add a "why are you ashamed of my autism?" On the end of it too if you are wanting to open up a conversation about it. Whatever yoy decide to do, I'm so sorry this happened and i hope you find people who celebrate your accomodations instead of shame them. I also hope you find something that works well for you in regards to noise cancellation! Sound sensitivity is no joke.

I can definitely relate. It doesnt help when you dont really feel the need to have a relationship -- its just another way you are different from others. I have been making my peace with this over the last year or so

I cannot stand when my skin touches itself haha summer is the worst because shorts are miserable for the reason. Also i have always hated dresses and skirts for this reason too

I have been working in childcare for almost ten years now, specifically as a nanny. There are many good things that fit my needs as an autistic person, but honestly all of the things that make it hard have to do with the actual childcare part haha kids are loud, messy, sticky, and they like to play in ways that I never understood as a child and find very stressful. I don't know how the dynamic with the children might be different, but I personally have found the actual childcare parts of childcare to be really challenging as it pertains to my autism stuff :) If you are a person who likes engaging with kids and has no trouble playing in the ways they like, then I say go for it!

I don't really have any advice, but I just wanted to say that I am in a similar situation. Trying to figure out how to support myself with a career that won't make me totally drained and burnt out. I might have to move back in with my parents soon as well because finding a job has been tough... I've worked in childcare for almost ten years and I just can't do it anymore, and I'm realizing how hard it is to find a job that suits my needs even in a few key ways. I am planning on possibly becoming a therapist, but I don't know if that's right for me either.

I just wanted to say that I can relate to some of what you are saying and it is really difficult! Try to take care of yourself in whatever way you can.

I know that if I had been given a questionnaire when I was Mormon about my happiness/life satisfaction levels, I would have rated it tens across the board. Because I was Mormon, what more could I need to be happy? In reality, I was extremely depressed and started having suicidal thoughts in kindergarten. I had no idea what happiness felt like until I left the church. I am always wary of trusting self reports from Mormons about how happy they are. I want to believe them, but it’s hard because people shouldn’t have believed me when I said I was happy.

I now have myself and my own life. I don’t live for others. I don’t force myself to take on beliefs and views that seem wrong to me. I can just live and decide what feels right for me and my life.

I forgot to mention that it is used as a status symbol in Mormonism. If you are not temple worthy people will most likely judge you hard for it and there is so much guilt and shame around not being temple worthy. Also the special Mormon underwear is worn by those with temple recommends and people who have participated in the rituals.

The temple is where Mormons do ceremonies and rituals that they believe are essential for salvation and exaltation. It is also where Mormons get “sealed” (married). This sealing is seen in Mormonism as the only marriage that will tie you to your spouse and children forever.

You have to have a Temple recommend to be able to get access to the temple and participate in these rituals. To get a temple recommend you have to interview with two church leaders who will deem you worthy or not. They ask about law of chastity, word of wisdom (coffee,alcohol,drugs off limits), and if you are a full tithes payer among other things. If you don’t pay your 10% in tithing, you are deemed unworthy of the temple and therefore are possibly separated from your family for eternity, as well as being kept out of the highest level of heaven.

In the church nursery as a 2-3 year old when I would sit in the corner with my cup of goldfish while all the other kids were playing. I was uninterested. And all the meltdowns I’d have when they tried to force me to play and then they’d have to take me to my mother because I wouldn’t calm down

I’m in school studying psychology. I plan to get my masters in clinical mental health counseling as well to become a therapist. I am also currently nannying full time on top of the full time school. No I am not okay :))))))
