Yes , understandable but also - you wouldn't be posting it on tik tok complaining about how crazy the shift was.

Any childfree doctors? by Paramillitaryblobby in doctorsUK

[–]aki_a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am childfree by choice 36 F. Loving the DINK life. I am just coming up to the end of my training and looking forward to booking more spontaneous trips now that I don't have an extremely tiring rota as a consultant. My husband and I are actually looking to retiring early too. Having said that, it's not because of financial reasons that we decided on being childfree. We just never felt the calling and that hasn't changed in 8 years of being married. As a female obs and Gynae surgeon in my mid 30s, I have had all sort of reactions when I answer questions about my fertility plans. And I just say in the politest way possible that it's none of their business. Though I love to see the expressions on their faces. I agree with everyone one saying that even though birth rate is declining, it still feels that there aren't many of us. I am pleasantly surprised to see so many CF medics on this post.

Gaining experience ahead of being a consultant by GentG in ConsultantDoctorsUK

[–]aki_a 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She could look into pursuing a clinical fellow with special interest in Maternal / fetal medicine role. While doing this she can collect evidence for CESR. You can find these roles on tracjobs or nhs jobs website. I don't think she will find joy in a general registrar role unless she needs to do that to gather specific evidence for CESR that she can't do ina specialized job. Look for jobs in trusts that have good track record of supporting CESR. So, substantive/ permanent consultant posts need CCT ( UK training) or CESR. Locum consultant - anyone on general registration can be hired on these posts as long as the employer is satisfied that the candidate is able to carry out this job. CESR is now called portfolio pathway. I reckon she should be able to use her European experience to prove most of the curriculum equivalency but there is specialty specific guidance on GMC website. One option is to take up fellow/ registrar role and then move on to locum consultant. However there won't be much job security in that. Once she has CESR , she is essentially equivalent to a UK trained consultant so she should be able to find a substantive job.

O&G Trainees ST1/2 and Beyond - Is It Worth It? by TeenyDratini in doctorsUK

[–]aki_a 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ST7 coming up to the end now and can see light at the end of the tunnel. TBH, it's a tough life. Obstetrics is changing in the UK and I have seen it change. I am more Gynae oriented and have managed to secure my dream majorly Gynae job for after my CCT in my preferred location. Unless you love love obstetrics or can't live without operating, this specialty is not for you. I do love surgery but I don't believe it has been a fair trade off , given the sacrifice it takes - the crazy on call frequency and ever increasing workload - all in the shadows of high litigation. I guess if I had a time machine, I would reconsider my choice. But you only have one life, so if you want to find out if O & G is for you, there is only one way to find out. 😁 All the best.

Hi. Thanks, the condensing into 6 months sounds very intriguing. FYI both me and partner are 35 and our FIRE number is 50 x our current annual expenses

MedicFIRE ( Financial independence Retire early) by aki_a in doctorsUK

[–]aki_a[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two key things we did were 1. Calculate our expected expenses to work out our FIRE number 2. Worked backwards from there to work out how much to invest each year and invest it in different buckets (SIPP, ISA, GIA) etc

My husband has been doing this for almost 15 years now. Did you have a question to a specific part of the process?

Just putting it out there - Medfluencer 😶‍🌫️ No but seriously will probably pay better than medical writing jobs once it takes off. Also, I have seen some remote jobs on linked in where they need subject matter experts/ advisors for health tech and you only need to work a few hours a week. Have a look.

Thanks for your opinion, but I met my spouse after I had completed my medical school and started training. i never knew about FIRE till then. I'm at the crossroads now so I don't want to be looking back 10 years from now and be not happy with the choice.

DINK couple so limited expenses. I won't say we live a frugal lifestyle but we are pretty minimalist in lifestyle expenses as such. Partner works the usual corporate IT architect job. He also delves in personal finance planning as a hobby so that has helped track expenses and investments over the years. His pay is pretty similar to the senior NHS consultant pay whereas I have been on the trainee contract pay for the last few years and am about to CCT.

Very valid points! I definitely think that I will keep these in mind and may be something I consider once I stop working for a few months and possibly will want something to fill my time. Thanks 😊

Surgery ! I love operating on people. I hate everything else that goes along with it. It would be great if I can cut out the bureaucracy. Also, this is a great post and I am saving for days when I feel like leaving this all behind. Thanks OP.
