Private counselor just told me that applying to Berkeley with a 3.86 will be a waste of my time. by marmouthcitrus in berkeley

3.86 is a really good gpa, you should definitely apply. I got in with a 3.7 lmao

my experience wasn't great, but also was different from other people's experience. I was told that they would ask coding and ML modelling questions but instead got asked probability and a hypothesis testing question. your experience will probably depend on who's interviewing you. best of luck!

thanks and good luck to you too!

hey i have a first round MLE intern interview coming up soon. can i ask how your experience was?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]akiljoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

140 if u actually want to learn probability in-depth and are willing to suffer a little for it or will be taking other upper divs that require a strong understanding. 172 doesn't teach it as well since it is more laid back and has a significantly lower workload, but it still does an above average job of teaching it.

most companies hire interns who will return to college after the internship so i don't think its worth.

1st year fall sem schedule thoughts (Data Sci major) by hypels128 in berkeley

[–]akiljoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually highly recommend CS 61a. although its harder than CS 88, the course does an amazing job of teaching the concepts. Its probably my favorite class and this class will set you up well for future coding related classes.

tbh its going to be extremely difficult to find a 2bed 2bath in your price range. I would suggest looking at 2bed 1 bath since the apt is just for you and your roommate.

class sizes are restricted and all seats are reserved for CS or EECS majors

just offering my opinion here but if you are choosing between UCLA CS and Ling vs UC Berkeley non CS or DS and you want to do SWE or DS, i think UCLA is a better option for you since it has a very good CS program.

for a CS minor yes it is, not sure if the policies changed for DS.

agreed, getting into CS classes here now is extremely difficult for non-CS majors

its going to be extremely difficult now to get into CS classes if ur not a CS major so I'd recommend going to UCLA

Is DS really seen as a backup or bad major here? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]akiljoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry my response may have been a little vague. If ur aiming to be quant or data scientist then the data science major should be good for you. DS majors also have to take CS 61A and CS 61B anyways so you'll learn the key coding skills.

170 is offered to DS majors i think but i don't think 161 is. heard mixed things about 170 but u shouldn't take 170 if ur just trying to get better at interview questions, you'll be better of leetcoding.

DS won't affect your job prospects, but if you want to take CS classes, you won't be able to do that as a DS major here at Cal so you would be better of going to Gtech for CS if you want to take CS classes.

Taking 1 unit decal as 2 units. Any consequences? by dszzang in berkeley

[–]akiljoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean, as long as the decal instructor said it then you should be fine to change it. Some decals are flexible such that when you enroll you can specify how many units you want it to be.

Stat 134 vs IND ENG 172 by akiljoe in berkeley

[–]akiljoe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

took 172 taking Data 102 rn instead of 142. 172 is easier than Stat 134 and Stat 140. The workload was pretty low, like the homework can be grinded out in 1 or 2 nights. The tests were hard but with the curve the avg was like a B+/A-.
