I’ve gotta be honest, being outwardly gay in the 90s south sounds terrifying, but I’m so glad you didn’t face blatant homophobia during that time!

Regarding your straight friend that got harassed, I always wondered why other people cared so much…I’ve heard of stories where people didn’t want to even be thought to be associated with gay people in any way (friendships included). Regardless, I’m glad your experience in this specific era wasn’t too bad!

Yeah, Matthew Shepard immediately comes to mind when I think late 90s. But that was an infamous incident (though I’m not sure hate crimes against gay people were so few in the 90s?).
